From our alarms to the heat in our homes, hot water in our showers and weather reports on our cell phones, every morning, without even realizing it, the mainframe is there helping us get our days off to a good start. As the IBM mainframe turns 50, we’re expanding our academic partnerships with faculty who want to help their students understand how it’s hard to go about our daily activities where the mainframe doesn't play some quiet, efficient role.
To help you inspire and challenge your students to develop skills which can help make the extraordinary possible, we are kicking off a year-long celebration of the IBM Mainframe. The new IBM Mainframe50 Tumblr page is now live. Every day we will be releasing new content about how the mainframe makes the extraordinary possible. We encourage both you and your students to subscribe to this drumbeat of content, based on weekly themes, which will feature a range of industry, business and societal innovations changing the world we live in today.
Additionally, stay tuned for more information about a new phase of our Master the Mainframe Contest. This contest provides you with an interesting way to increase your course enrollment and reinforce the skills your students need to launch their careers. Through these efforts IBM’s Academic Initiative has provided more than 30,000 higher education professionals with free access to high end enterprise systems and software as well as teaching materials to get started.
It’s an exciting time to be sharing with your students that learning high demand mainframe skills can pave the way towards making the extraordinary possible. With the mainframe driving new approaches to cloud, analytics, security and mobile computing, your students can tackle challenges never before thought possible. And it can all start by asking yourself and your students - how many times have you used a mainframe today?
