Using the ITCAM Demo application to simulate Requests with ITCAM / APM.
So let's say you have your WAS server being monitored but don't have any Applications deployed/started on it yet. The ITCAM L3/Dev team has created a "demo" Application where you can install this application easily on to your WAS profile (Liberty or Standard) and then run/monitor this application. This is useful because it saves time if you are looking for a quick solution to "try out" a monitored application and to see ITCAM related data of the monitored application. You can do things like create Servlets, JSP... [More]

Using the IBM Hybrid Gateway to view a mix of V6 and V8 agents.
If you want to view a mix of V6 and V8 monitoring agents that communicate with your APM server, then you can install and use the IBM Hybrid Gateway server. The Hybrid Gateway sits between your TEPS and the APM server, either in the SaaS Cloud or on-Prem. and is used to view a mix of V6 and V8 agents on the same APM UI console Some advantages of using the IBM Hybrid Gateway are: easy to setup and install can be installed on the TEPS if using RHEL6 or RHEL7. However, a separate server is preferred. easy to configure and manage offers views... [More]

Using the http-ping utility to generate continuous http traffic for the HT agent.
When you install the HTTP "HU" agent to monitor your Web Server, you will not see any data on your APM console until you load/send some valid web/http traffic on port 80 to your monitored web server. There is a handy free utility I use called http-ping that can generate continuous or discrete http traffic in a background script. This can be useful if you don't have continuous adequate load on your web server and need to generate continuous, quick http traffic. Once you have generated a good amount of http traffic on your... Using the generated key.jks file with the Certificate in the SCAPM UI product.
When using the SCAPM UI 7.7 product, you will normally generate the key.jks file and copy it into the right directories. To know if this key file is being used correctly with the Certificates, look at the path you have used the key.jks file. Normally its in the ../usr/servers/apmui/resources/security/ directory. This will indicate that the key file is being used correctly. However, if you're still not convinced, you can do a packet capture using any standard network packet capture look like tcpdump when the Certificate is actually... [More]

Using Managing Server to generate Reports in ITCAM.
Your ITCAM server has been doing a good job of monitoring your WebSphere or J2EE (WebLogic / JBoss / Tomcat) servers. You now want to get some Reports showing the monitored data. You basically have two types of Reports: Application Reports and Server Resource/Capacity-type Reports under the Performance Analysis menu of the Managing Server. Some tips to keep in mind before using these Reporting menus: Increase Monitoring Level / Sampling Rate to get more data: To get some good amount of Reporting data, you will first need to populate the... Using ITCAM for J2EE agent with Tomcat v9 and OpenJDK 11.
Yes, J2EE v7.1.0.0.7 (IF7) will support Tomcat 9, but OpenJDK 11/Oracle JDK 11 is not fully supported. So, even though this may work, its not supported and you will not see all data om some of the panels. For example, the GC panels will not display Allocation heap data. The best option is to use the supported IBM JRE 1.7 or higher. Good luck. Using ICAM v2019.2.1 with Custom Views in the Resources menu.
If you are using ICAM version 2019.2.1 and trying to see all your agents under Resources , you may find this view cluttered with a whole bunch of agents that are still not connected. For example, you may have few agents connected (say Linux OS agents, or Windows agents) but don't have your other agents (say http or datapower or WAS) connected just yet, you're working on it. If you want to de-clutter this view until you get more agents online, there's currently no direct way in ICAM v2019.2.1. But fret not, this request has been... [More]

Universal Agents and historical graph legends.
Universal Agents and historical graph legends. Universal agents are a bit long in the tooth now, and Agent builder is the way to go, but I bet there is still a number of you out there with UA agents running. Came across this the other day, a multiple point line graph after it was running for a number of hours; the colours and sometimes the legends of a graph switch. so say graph was lineA - red lineb - green linec - blue suddenly lineA would be green and the legend would read lineb - but it was lineA data Here is an example of... Uninstalling an unwanted ITM module such as 32 bit ax shared libraries or gskit
Uninstalling an unwanted ITM module such as 32 bit ax shared libraries or gskit As discussed in previous blog about the gskit libraries, components can get out of step when there are a number of upgrade in your ITM environment. Tuning for S&P when data amounts are large
Tuning for S&P when data amounts are large. Recently came across an issue where the S&P agent had not be running for a few days and the amount of raw data to be dealt with was huge. Here I am meaning tables with millions of rows. If the index is not updated or current this can cause problems for the S&P agent, as a lot of I/O must be done to find the datapages on disk. This was causing the a number of issues, with a single S&P run taking a number of days and still not finishing. One issue seen was that... [More]

Troubleshooting IBM Tivoli Monitoring VMware VI agent
Here are a few basic steps to get the most out of the the VMware VI agent: 1) Install the latest vCenter from VMware. The best release is the latest release, vCenter 4.1, and it has shown superior performance over earlier releases. If you are still using vCenter v2.5, be sure to install the latest level, Update 6 (build 227637). The early update levels of vCenter v2.5 will not work with the agent, and VMware currently supports only Update 6. 2) Install the latest VMware VI agent. If you haven't already, install the new v6.2.3, available... [More]
