Welcome to the Application Performance Management Blog, where you can read the perspectives from APM experts. This Blog provides insights into the Application Performance Management solution, as well as technical details about specific IBM products.
IBM SmartCloud Monitoring manages both physical and virtual components
of a private cloud infrastructure. It provides performance and availability
monitoring of the virtualized infrastructure as well as the virtual servers
running within it, including the health and availability of the pooled
processors, memory, network and storage resources, as well as the individual
operating systems running key customer workloads. It features built-in
analytics and user-configurable policies to guide virtual machine placement,
allowing cloud... [More]
Wired.com/cloudline has just posted an interesting article, by Dr. Angel L. Diaz from IBM, on the importance of a Service Level Agreements (SLA) for your Cloud Services (http://www.wired.com/cloudline/2011/12/service-level-agreement%E2%80%99s-in-the-cloud-who-cares/). The article talks about some of the pitfalls of not having a SLA and potential considerations you need to take into account to minimize the risks of adopting cloud as an extension of your IT shop. It should also be noted that the Cloud Standards Customer Council... [More]
The ITCAM for Transactions on zSeries White Paper discusses an ITCAM for Transactions 7.3 deployment into the IBM zPET environment (a large scale high performance high-availability production-like zSeries environment). In this environment ITCAM is monitoing z/OS applications, installed across CICS, IMS and WMQ, while utilizing a zLinux LPAR to support the ITM and ITCAM infrastructure. This deployment had three goals: firstly to facilitate integration testing for ITCAM for Transactions in a complex high performance environment, secondly to... [More]
There are several parts to applying application support and understanding what is happening in each part will help you determine where the issue is and lead to faster resolution. TEMS Situations along with the matching attribute and catalog file(s) reside on the TEMS. The step of adding the situations to the TEMS and placing the attribute and catalog files in their proper location is known as seeding. When this step has not been done or has not worked properly the most common visual errors are situations not displaying in the Situation Editor... [More]

First look to see if there is an error in the view: Return Codes 202 / 209 errors or 67109066 / 67109073 (these are for remote TEMS). This means there is an application support issue. You can use ITMSUPER or the Self Monitoring workspaces provided in 622 and above. Return Code 5 implies something was not there like a managed system. Verify the query distribution. Return Code 3000/3001 implies historical data is not available yet. Verify that data has been captured by checking for the binary files. Return Code 155 means an agent did not... [More]
ITCAM for SOA version 7.1.1 Fix Pack 3 adds enhanced integration with WebSphere Service Registry and Repository (WSRR). A series of viewlets is now available in the Tivoli Media Gallery that illustrate how ITCAM for SOA and WSRR interact in defining situations, and in communicating with each other when a situation is triggered, modified, or closed. Using WSRR, you can set up Service Level Definitions (SLD) for individual services within your SOA environment. The SLD in the WSRR governance enablement profile provides a formal specification of... The guys from Customer Support have just published their February 2012 Newsletter for ITCAM for Application Diagnostics and ITCAM for WebSphere. The newsletter provides up-to-date technical information, FAQs, and links to other useful information - nice work! Check it out here
Here's a link to a useful IBM Education Assistant flash module that covers debugging communications issues between ITCAM for Application Diagnostics version 7.1 and the transaction collector (as found in ITCAM for Transactions) using the Transactions Tracking API (TTAPI). As well as ITCAM for AD 7.1, these instructions can also be applied to ITCAM for WebSphere 6.1, although be aware that the directory paths will be different for that version.
In this short video, you will see how quickly we get value from Tivoli's Application Performance Management portfolio managing an SAP environment. We will focus on understanding our end user's response times. We will diagnose and repair a problem that affects the performance of the SAP application. We will look at end user response times, then availability and performance metrics for the client, transaction, server, and application to determine root cause of a perceived end user response issue. <<... Today's IT environments continue to grow in complexity while the Customer user base demands the ability to execute transactions faster with an expectation of an expanded level of overall service and functionality. This increase in demand is challenged by the reality of our economy which forces most IT Managers to deliver within ever tightening budget constraints. Effective Application Performance Management (APM) is the only way to meet the Customer expectations and demands while working within the reality of today's financial constraints.... [More]
Whether you are planning a staged delivery to provide earlier and more steady ROI or you are increasing domain coverage to enhance your existing End-to-End monitoring, there are several capacity constraints you should keep in mind when planning the incremental deployment. It is much better to be aware of the constraints and plan for them than to try to revive a broken production environment; the article listed on the following wiki page details the constraints you need to be aware of and provide a strategy for the incremental deployment that...
