The Warehouse Proxy Agent(WPA) Server has two data connections to establish at startup. The first one is to the database being used to warehouse data. The second, in which we will discuss in this blog post, is the communication port that the WPA is listening on for all agents to connect, that are warehousing data. These agents when started have to make a Remote Procedure Call(RPC) connection to the WPA listening port to establish a data path for historical data. The way in which this happens is a follows: 1.The WPA on... [More]
The latest releases of IBM Tivoli Monitoring (v6.3) and IBM SmartCloud Monitoring (v7.2) employ a growing number of shareable components and also easily integrate with other applications. Check out our new solution guide for an inside look at how all the moving parts fit together. Click here to get the solution guide from the ITM Wiki.
It seems like only yesterday I was at PULSE, talking with clients and overcoming jet lag. PULSE was fantastic, and I hope you had a chance to hear some great speakers and also say hi to old friends. I still recall what Peyton Manning shared in his keynote about innovation, strategy and leadership. One particularly interesting conversation I had was with a client who uses Smart Cloud Application Performance Management to monitor their SAP environment -- he was happy with the new capabilities we added to the SAP monitoring... "A man with a watch knows what time it is. A man with two watches is never sure." is a quote attributed to Lee Segall. I have two watches, and as much as I try, I can never keep them in sync. Maybe I need better watches! Oftentimes, System p agent users want to compare the attributes with some other other AIX tools such as nmon and topas. And of course, it is disturbing when these tools show different values. But there are a couple of things to do to ensure that these tools are measuring the same metrics in the... [More]
Taking a technical break this week on Warehouse best practices. The last six blog entries had to do with the Warehouse Proxy client that runs as part of the agent. This also included the TEMA code that saved the historical data in the short term history(STH) files. The next series of blog entries will be about the Warehouse Proxy Server or Warehouse Proxy Agent(WPA). The WPA is responsible for listening on a port for historical data from the Warehouse Proxy clients(agents). The WPA also has to connect to the database being used for warehousing... [More]

The new application monitoring solution from IBM is called SmartCloud® Monitoring - Application Insight I am amazed with the newest technology coming out of IBM in the application monitoring area. We recently made a new capability available that was built from the ground up to monitor cloud based workloads. It doesn't require a lengthy learning curve to get started, nor does it require a large investment to get started as it is only $99 per VM. The product is a heavily simplified offering compared to... I enjoy a good apple, and Gala apples are the ones I get most of the time, but it is amazing how many choices there are these days. I remember when your choice was only between red delicious and golden delicious. But as much as I enjoy a good apple, I'm never sure what to do with the remaining core. Sometimes, I compost them, but other times, I put them outside for the local animals and insects to enjoy. As appetizing as an apple may be, the remaining core is not an especially pretty sight. Even worse is a core file... [More]
The Warehouse Proxy agent provides a set of works spaces that are defined as “Manage Our Stuff With Our Stuff”(MOSWOS). IBM/Tivoli love acronyms and MOSWOS has been around a long time internally. But, it is a term that usually causes confusion for a user of ITM. This confusion extents further for the Warehouse Proxy agent in the sense that most users do not know that these MOSWOS workspaces exist. The Warehouse MOSWOS workspaces can be used to look for problems occurring in historical data collection. ... [More]
