Does your business infrastructure include ASP.NET applications, web services, WCF services making calls to various databases and you want to track the transactions occurring? Well, you've come to the right place!
ITCAM for Microsoft Applications 6.3 which got recently eGA'd includes a brand new .NET Data Collector v7.3.1. (Well, not exactly brand new as a new born baby, since the previous version of .NET Data Collector v7.3.0 used to be bundled with another ITCAM product - ITCAM for Transactions v7.3.0). A data collector is not an agent. It is in fact quite different from the .NET Framework Agent that is shipped with the ITCAM for MS Apps since like ages.
The focus of .NET Framework Agent was, is and probably will always be to monitor the health of your .NET application in terms of the availability of core .NET processes, windows events for .NET, performance counter metrics, situations etc. The .NET Data Collector (.NET DC as we fondly call it) tells us a whole different story about your .NET applications, mainly in terms of transactions. In other words, you get response time, transaction rate, transaction topology etc. of your .NET apps.
.NET DC works hand-in-hand with Transaction Collector agent and Transaction Reporter agent of the ITCAM for Transactions bundle. Basically .NET DC collects information regarding transactions occurring in .NET applications and forwards it to the Transaction Collector agent, which in turn aggregates this information, so that the Transaction Reporter agent can pick it up in order to display it on TEP. In other words, .NET DC is not an agent and does not have its own UI. It is the Transaction Reporter agent (from ITCAM for Transactions bundle) which displays the data gathered by .NET DC on TEP.
The following are the scenarios for which the transactions are monitored by .NET DC
There's a lot to it. If you want to go through more details, please visit the following link: Scenarios monitored by .NET Data Collector
