ITM Agent Insights: Watchdog Service Monitoring OS Agents

This blog will discuss how the Watchdog Service monitors the OS agents.
The watchdog process that monitors the OS agent is named kcawd (kcawd.exe on Windows). This process is started by default when the OS agent starts. Since this is a standalone process, it does not appear in the Agent Management Services W orkspace. What does appear in the workspace is an agent named "Proxy Agent Services Watchog" agent. This agent monitors the kcawd process to make sure it is running and if not will automatically restart it.
Additional background information:
In the Tivoli Enterprise Portal Desktop, the Agent Management Services workspace lists the agents that can be monitored by this logical watchdog running inside of the OS Agent. These are non-OS agents, so it is correct that the Monitoring Agent for Linux OS and Windows OS are not listed in the workspace. One of the agents listed in the workspace is the Proxy Agent Services Watchdog which is the physical watchdog that monitors the OS Agent.
The Physical Watchdog does not have a communication facility, so it cannot report information to the Tivoli Enterprise Portal or respond to actions. It cannot expose information about the OS Agent in the Tivoli Enterprise Portal display and the Take Actions are not supported with it since it is not an agent but a separate process. It is simply a process that is always monitoring the OS Monitoring Agent.
