Welcome to the Application Performance Management Blog, where you can read the perspectives from APM experts. This Blog provides insights into the Application Performance Management solution, as well as technical details about specific IBM products.
Its a Monday morning, you have a heap of work to get through and you cant log in to the TEP. Your presented with the dreaded "KFWITM393E" error... Don't reach for those painkillers....The below explains how to get you back on your feet fast! In the coming weeks/months there will be a series of helpful tips and hits to help you correct problems and improve your ITM infrastructure. Please feel free to link me your network When logging into the Tivoli Enterprise... [More]
ITM 6.3.0 introduces Tivoli Data Warehouse significant improvements in pruning and querying large Tivoli Data Warehouse databases by allowing to partition database tables . Range partitioning permits the fast roll out of data without having to perform a resource intensive DELETE operation on blocks of rows. Range partitioning also improves query performance when the partitioning key is part of the query clause. Performance is improved because the database can discard unnecessary partitions from the list of blocks that must be fetched from... [More]
The Warehouse Proxy Agent(WPA) Server has two data connections to establish at startup. The first one is to the database being used to warehouse data. The second, in which we will discuss in this blog post, is the communication port that the WPA is listening on for all agents to connect, that are warehousing data. These agents when started have to make a Remote Procedure Call(RPC) connection to the WPA listening port to establish a data path for historical data. The way in which this happens is a follows: 1.The WPA on... [More]
I love to take pictures of family and friends, then quickly load the pictures to my tablet to show everyone. For a long while, I had a camera bag that was not quite large enough for my tablet, so I carried the tablet in a separate bag. When I recently bought a new camera, I wanted a new camera bag, so I found one designed to combine both a camera and a tablet. I'm always interesting in ways to make things simpler. (It is a bit ironic that I used my phone to take this picture - if I always used my phone's built-in camera, I... [More]
Custom Monitoring Dashboards (Self Service charts and tables with Monitoring Data in minutes) Have you wanted to create custom widgets, tables and charts with any IBM Tivoli Monitoring real-time data on a web UI? IBM Tivoli Monitoring 6.3 introduces this capability of self service dashboards. The UI piece: Custom monitoring dashboard are available through IBM Dashboard Application Services Hub or DASH (formerly called TIP, Tivoli Integration Portal) for users to create their own pages, charts and tables using any Tivoli... "A man with a watch knows what time it is. A man with two watches is never sure." is a quote attributed to Lee Segall. I have two watches, and as much as I try, I can never keep them in sync. Maybe I need better watches! Oftentimes, System p agent users want to compare the attributes with some other other AIX tools such as nmon and topas. And of course, it is disturbing when these tools show different values. But there are a couple of things to do to ensure that these tools are measuring the same metrics in the... [More]

Tivoli Performance Analyzer is an agent under the Tivoli framework, that looks at the historical data from various agents in the Tivoli Data Warehouse, and calculates the trend and does forecast based on certain algorithm - on how certain resources of the agents are performing. The Performance Analyzer ( or ITPA as it is commonly referred to ) should be configured to look at the TDW (Tivoli Data Warehouse) with proper credentials. Also the agents like OS, ITCAM, DB2, Oracle, VMware, and SystemP should be configured for historical data... [More]
The IBM Tivoli Performance Analyzer also called as ITPA - is an Tivoli agent which looks at the Tivoli Data Warehouse, and analyzes the historical data from various agents and comes up with a trend and also forecasts how certain resources are going to look like in future. Let me just break up the above a bit.. The Performance Agent is another Tivoli agent, and is capable of analyzing historical data from several agents stored in Tivoli Data Warehouse ( The agents could be it OS, ITCAM, VMware Agent, Oracle and the DB2 agent.)... Taking a technical break this week on Warehouse best practices. The last six blog entries had to do with the Warehouse Proxy client that runs as part of the agent. This also included the TEMA code that saved the historical data in the short term history(STH) files. The next series of blog entries will be about the Warehouse Proxy Server or Warehouse Proxy Agent(WPA). The WPA is responsible for listening on a port for historical data from the Warehouse Proxy clients(agents). The WPA also has to connect to the database being used for warehousing... [More]
Application Performance Diagnostics (APD) Lite version 1.1.1 is now available to download . New in this refresh Simplified Secure Connection When connecting the APD Lite UI (RCP or plug-in) to a secured application server you no longer need to specify the trust store file, trust store password and key type in the server connection definition. If global security is enabled supply the user name and password for the WebSphere Application Server administrative user. If your application server uses a remote key store... [More]
Table Range Partitioning Range partitioning is a database feature that allows for quick rollout of data from a table. Instead of deleting a set of rows at a time and having to commit frequently to avoid filling the transaction log, a whole day partition can be quickly detached and removed. This partition detach/removal takes seconds instead of hours that it could take when the table is not range partitioned. The Warehouse Proxy Agent (WPA) and Summarization and Pruning Agent (SPA) both support this new feature and will create... [More]
A guide to enabling upstream and downstream linking in ITCAM for Transactions is now available. These features can be used in your workflow to aid in identifying performance issues, hotspots and for problem determination by limiting the transaction topology scope to only relevant nodes. It seems like only yesterday I was at PULSE, talking with clients and overcoming jet lag. PULSE was fantastic, and I hope you had a chance to hear some great speakers and also say hi to old friends. I still recall what Peyton Manning shared in his keynote about innovation, strategy and leadership. One particularly interesting conversation I had was with a client who uses Smart Cloud Application Performance Management to monitor their SAP environment -- he was happy with the new capabilities we added to the SAP monitoring...
