Welcome to the Application Performance Management Blog, where you can read the perspectives from APM experts. This Blog provides insights into the Application Performance Management solution, as well as technical details about specific IBM products.
The new application monitoring solution from IBM is called SmartCloud® Monitoring - Application Insight
I am amazed with the newest technology coming out of IBM in the application monitoring area. We recently made a new capability available that was built from the ground up to monitor cloud based workloads. It doesn't require a lengthy learning curve to get started, nor does it require a large investment to get started as it is only $99 per VM. The product is a heavily simplified offering compared... This fix pack supersedes all previous IBM Tivoli Monitoring version 6.2.3 fix packs, including the most recent version 6.2.3 Fix Pack 2. The fix pack contains 87 APAR fixes, including component uplifts, support for new operating systems, and some feature and serviceability enhancements. This is an upgrade-only installation. Documentation is provided in the the README which can be... [More]
I enjoy a good apple, and Gala apples are the ones I get most of the time, but it is amazing how many choices there are these days. I remember when your choice was only between red delicious and golden delicious. But as much as I enjoy a good apple, I'm never sure what to do with the remaining core. Sometimes, I compost them, but other times, I put them outside for the local animals and insects to enjoy. As appetizing as an apple may be, the remaining core is not an especially pretty sight.
Even worse is a... [More]
The Warehouse Proxy agent provides a set of works spaces that are defined as “Manage Our Stuff With Our Stuff”(MOSWOS). IBM/Tivoli love acronyms and MOSWOS has been around a long time internally. But, it is a term that usually causes confusion for a user of ITM. This confusion extents further for the Warehouse Proxy agent in the sense that most users do not know that these MOSWOS workspaces exist. The Warehouse MOSWOS workspaces can be used to look for problems occurring in historical data collection. ... [More]

The User's Guide for Tivoli Log File Agent Version 6.3 can be found here: http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/tivihelp/v61r1/topic/com.ibm.itm.doc_6.3/logfile/logfileagent_user.htm
The main new feature in this version is "Remote log file monitoring". You can use Remote log file monitoring to monitor log files on remote systems.
Log File agent can monitor text log files on remote systems by using the Secure Shell (SSH) File Transfer Protocol. SSH File Transfer Protocol is also known as Secure FTP, or SFTP. Remote... [More]
Every instance of the IBM Tivoli Monitoring product contains the ITM basic services component. One service that this component provides is the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) architecture. This allows ITM instances to register functions that can be invoked from another ITM instance using RPC.
Because of this, each ITM instance has the capability to act as a client that sends requests to other ITM instances, or as a server that accepts requests from other ITM instances.
When an agent connects to its monitoring server... [More]

In my previous blog entry , I detailed how to configure historical collection so that the least amount of data is saved and the export of that data is the quickest. All for keeping the size of the short term history file below 1GB. However, when saving historical data at the TEMA the agent can become isolated from the Warehouse Proxy agent because of network issues. Or the database itself may be down not allowing exports. When this happens, the STH files start growing and can exceed the 1GB limit over time. At the TEMS, this can also... [More]
A few years ago, our neighbors moved out of state, but left us with a forsythia bush. My wife knows how to transplant bushes without killing them, and we now have this glorious forsythia that is full of vibrant yellow blooms that we can see from our kitchen window. While I can look into my back yard and see what has changed, how can you keep up with changes to LPARs and Servers in your System p environment?
One reason you use System p virtualization is to move LPARs from Server to Server to balance work load. The new HMC... [More]
The User's Guide for IBM Tivoli Monitoring Agent Builder Version 6.3 can be found here:
Agent Builder User's Guide on the IBM Tivoli Monitoring Information Center
The main Agent Builder feature in this release is "Full agent test". You can now test the full agent in the Agent Builder without the need for a Tivoli Monitoring Infrastructure. This feature enhances the attribute group test function that was introduced in version 18.104.22.168. A demo video of the new feature... [More]
In my previous blog entry
we discovered that each short term history(STH) file must be kept
under 1GB in size for performance reasons at the TEMA (Tivoli
Enterprise Monitoring Agent) or TEMS (Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring
Server). As with any smartphone data plan it is always good to have
ways to try and not exceed this limit. And for STH files the same
applies. Here are ways to achieve this: Use
the largest collection interval possible. This reduces the number
of rows saved in the STH file. Filter
any unneeded data from the... [More]
Problems: When the Tivoli Log File Agent is upgraded to version 6.2.3 Fix Pack 2 version, the previously configured instance and situation names that are in lowercase characters no longer function. Symptom: After update the Log File Agent of IBM Tivoli Monitoring 6.2.3 FixPack 2 to a current installation of the Log File Agent (KLO). The instance or situation names that were previously displayed in lowercase characters now appear in both lowercase and uppercase characters in the Tivoli Enterprise Portal Client display. The displayed... [More]
The long anticipated rise
of cloud computing is finally taking hold, with analysts reporting
more investment in public clouds than private clouds, and suggesting that half
of all production applications will be running on public clouds in three or
four years. The allure of public clouds
springs from advantages like improved service scalability, reduced operational
costs, and an increased focus on business goals and strategies instead of the
technology needed to pursue them. However, there is a cost to that
flexibility and economy,... [More]
New application monitoring solution from IBM
As IT infrastructures evolve, we are seeing a rapid shift towards cloud environments. This is creating the need for companies to look at different approaches for monitoring their environments. All systems that are deployed for infrastructure and business applications are centrally controlled, well known to the IT management teams, and fairly static. This makes application monitoring a relatively straightforward... [More]
You have just bought your
first smart phone. You then have to decide on how to use 'less data'
using your data plan(unless you are on an unlimited plan). You
google 'how to use less data' and see there are thousands of posts on
how to do this. In terms of Tivoli ITM warehousing, the same concept
applies, how to keep the short term history(STH) files at a
reasonable size. This requires for large data intensive agents to
think about the configuration of the historical collection interval,
warehousing upload interval, and retention... [More]
Applications running in a public cloud environment need
to be monitored for availability and performance, but the Application
Performance Management (APM) tools that may be provided with the hosting
service may lack the accuracy and objectivity to provide the level of
assurance that cloud tenants need.
I recently read a story about a war of words between Heroku and
their disgruntled customer, Rap Genius. Putting aside the customer’s
justifiable indignation at not getting the resources that they believed
they were paying for,... [More]
Being able to obtain TEP Charts in TBSM is a useful function, but setting up the ports might be a little daunting. There are a couple of things to remember. The default ports used by the TEPS in 623 changed:
TEPS 623 HTTP 15210 HTTPS 15211 TEPS 622 HTTP 15200 HTTPS 15201 For the ITM Chart Service to work, the port must be specified in 2 ways on TBSM. The most obvious is using the TBSM TIP GUI. Here is a screen print of the GUI panel where the TEPS port is specified: In addition, you must specify a CLI command as... [More]
