Welcome to the Application Performance Management Blog, where you can read the perspectives from APM experts. This Blog provides insights into the Application Performance Management solution, as well as technical details about specific IBM products.
Chess players are often asked how many moves ahead they can see. While computers can calculate millions of positions a second, humans depend on strategy, experience, pattern matching and even intuition. Even so, in certain positions, the best chess players can see 15 or more moves ahead. And yet, when this question was posed to Jose Raul Capablanca, chess world champion from 1921-1927, he is reported to have replied, "Only one, but it is always the right one."
And in regard to IBM Tivoli Monitoring products, a little... [More]
You might have heard the old adage, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Metrically, perhaps it is a gram of prevention and a kilogram of cure. In our home, vitamin C and zinc are our home's attempt to ward off colds, but I wish our ounce of prevention could come in the form of chocolate! Whatever works, the low-cost, proactive steps that prevent bigger problems later on are always worth it! And of course the same is true with information technology. Part of the reason you are running Tivoli monitoring software is not only for... [More]
Imagine you are busy perusing your e-mail when a critical alert occurs on a system within your environment. Wouldn't it be nice if you could receive a message containing a link that would open the Tivoli Enterprise Portal and take you right to the relevant area so you could investigate? This post shows how use Tivoli Monitoring facilities to automatically send a message to do just that. I assume you are familiar with the Tivoli Enterprise Portal Situation and Policy editors and will not go into great detail about them. Here are the steps: ... [More]
One of the last things any ITM operator wants to see is failure. In large production environments with multiple changes taking place this is always a risk.
The below education session (with Demos) and slide deck, explains how you can back up an restore all your critical information and configuration with simple product provided commands.
You have spent a lot of time and effort building your enterprise, do you really want to run the risk of loosing all your:-... [More]
What can be better that a warm place on a cold day? I've lived in North Carolina in the United States my whole life, and except for the occasional ice storm, it never really gets very cold. However, I do enjoy a nice fire in the fireplace, if for nothing more that toasting marshmallows when the coals die down. And as more homes turn to gas logs, finding suppliers of wood logs is getting harder.
Fortunately for IBM Tivoli Monitoring System p agent users, finding where the logs are is pretty simple. All the logs will be in the... [More]
In this blog I want to provide my view about clouds and the new systems of engagement and how these are changing the IT Industry and the way we manage and use IT resources. Let’s talk about answers to questions like: W hat are the expectations and key requirements for managing clouds and applications in systems of engagement? What are the key aspects of these changes and their effect in IT, systems management solutions and monitoring in particular? Cloud Computing is an irreversible change in the IT industry. Clouds are enabled by... [More]
Can't generate a report for 2013? If you haven't heard, a flash went out earlier this year with details about how to correct this issue. The flash can be found at: http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21621694
Sometimes I am confused whether to use the word "affect" or "effect." I usually get it right, but I do have to think about it first. Of course, affect is the verb and effect is the noun. The confusion can come in because there are rare instances when affect can be used as noun and effect as a verb. Use your favorite search engine to look up "affect vs effect" and read all about it. Within the System p world, there can also be confusion over the metrics physb and physc. Basically, here are the definitions... [More]
In this blog post I'll be demonstrating how install, configure, and view data in a new IBM produced monitoring solution -- all in under 5 minutes flat after downloading the installation media. About IBM SmartCloud Monitoring Application Insight
At Blue Medora we've been watching carefully, as over the past 6 months, IBM has fairly quietly released 5 distinct beta drops of IBM SmartCloud Monitoring Application Insight (SCMAI)-- the product IBM Tivoli had, until recently, been calling IBM Tivoli Cloud Consumer Monitoring (CCM).
Imagine you are the developer of a critical WebSphere application and
need to find the root cause of poor application response time. What are
your requirements for a diagnostic tool?
You want to avoid having to recreate the problem, however you may not
have access to the server where the application is deployed and you
probably won't be permitted to run a debugger. You need a lightweight
tool that can be installed quickly on the server by the application
support or operations team that does have access. Then they can gather... [More]
monitoring and diagnostic tools provide reporting. There are various types of
reports generated for different sets of consumers: Managers, Operators, Subject
matter experts (SME) etc. The reports that are currently generated are mostly
static in nature available in PDF, HTML and other formats.
times the static diagnostic reports generated for SMEs are not sufficient in
terms of data. The SME looks at the report and often times works with the
production administrator to either schedule or configure new reports.... [More]
It is fascinating to look at how Application Performance Management (APM) has evolved over the past decade. At one point, gathering the performance data was a challenge itself. Then the shift was to Data Warehouse, using Business Intelligence (BI) to analyze the data. Today, with the data explosion from various domains, it is imperative that we run some real Analytics in this space to complement the insights obtained from BI. Traditionally data mining was active in this space – but it was limited to a small subset of consumers who understood... [More]

Do you want to know what Tivoli products can work together? Do you have questions about the supported
levels of Tivoli products? If your
answer to these questions is yes, then you need to check out the Software

This is embarrassing! While we always encourage users to upgrade to the latest AIX TL and SP levels, AIX 6.1 TL 8 will cause the aixDataProvider-61 process to core on the AIX Premium and VIOS Premium agents. AIX 6.1 TL 8 is the underlying AIX for VIOS 2.2.2, so that is why the VIOS agent also has this problem. Earlier, the AIX Premium agent also had a core problem on AIX 7.1 TL1. The good news is that these problems are resolved in the following interim fixes: 18.104.22.168-TIV-ITM_AIX_PREM-IF0005 22.214.171.124-TIV-ITM_VIOS_PREM-IF0004 It is... [More]
If you have been using ITCAM for Microsoft Applications and recently decided to upgrade to v6.3.0 for monitoring your .NET and IIS infrastructure, you must be wondering what is this new '.NET Data Collector' (code: K4) in addition to '.NET Framework Agent' (code: QF) that is there in the installer package! Please go through my earlier post for a brief introduction of .NET Data Collector before we proceed to differentiate it from .NET Framework Agent. .NET Data Collector is now part of ITCAMMA 6.3.0 bundle
