Installing IBM SPSS C&DS Server and other product adapters in a single installation session

Save time by using IBM Installation Manager to install IBM SPSS C&DS and product adapters in one simple step

Comments

The IBM SPSS product portfolio consists of several different predictive analytics products. These products include IBM SPSS Modeler, IBM SPSS Statistics, IBM SPSS Analytical Decision Management, IBM SPSS Data Collection, among others. The base capabilities of these IBM SPSS products can be extended and enhanced by using the IBM SPSS Collaboration and Deployment Services (C&DS) product.

Figure 1: Adapters for other IBM SPSS products can be installed on the IBM SPSS C&DS Server.

Each IBM SPSS product includes its own adapter for IBM SPSS C&DS, and those adapters get installed on the IBM SPSS C&DS Repository Server to enable the product integration. Installing and configuring this server along with the appropriate adapters from the other products can be a time-consuming proposition, especially if you need to install a particular service pack level.

For example, suppose that you are using the IBM SPSS Modeler product. You want to store your Modeler files in the IBM SPSS C&DS Repository and score your Modeler stream by using the IBM SPSS C&DS batch or real-time scoring support. You will need to install the IBM SPSS C&DS Repository Server and the Modeler adapter. With several SPSS products, you'll have several adapters, and configuring and maintaining all these separate installations at compatible release levels can be a challenge.

This article introduces the process of installing both the server and adapters together in a single installation session.

Installing the repository server and adapters: Before and after examples

One of the biggest challenges when you installed IBM SPSS Collaboration and Deployment Services (IBM SPSS C&DS) was the sheer number of installs that were required. To address this challenge, the development team provided two enhancements: a redesign of the product packaging and switching to use IBM Installation Manager as its installation tool.

Suppose that you want to install and configure a C&DS Repository Server along with adapters for Statistics, Modeler, and Analytical Decision Management (ADM). To make matters worse, there is a fix pack available for each product, and you want the final topology to be running at the latest available fix level. How many installs are required to establish such a topology? Let's look at a before and after example to show off the enhancements to the installation tool and process.

Before: Historic example

Let's take a specific example of wanting to install IBM SPSS C&DS 5.0 Repository Server along with adapters for Statistics 21.0, Modeler 15.0, and ADM 7.0. Let's also assume that a fix pack is available for each IBM SPSS product. In this sample scenario, we need to complete sixteen different installations just for the IBM SPSS C&DS Repository Server and adapters, which does not include clients or other servers. Listing 1 enumerates the required installations.

Not only are there many installs to complete, but configuration is needed for each install. These separate installs require an enormous amount of time and effort.

Listing 1: Required Installs for Historic Example

  1. C&DS 5.0 Repository Server
  2. C&DS 5.0 Repository Server FP1
  3. Statistics 21 Adapter
  4. Statistics 21 Adapter FP
  5. Modeler 15 Adapter
  6. Modeler 15 Premium Adapter
  7. Modeler 15 Adapter FP1
  8. Modeler 15 Premium Adapter FP1
  9. ADM 7
  10. ADM 7 for Claims
  11. ADM 7 for Customer
  12. ADM 7 Modeler Advantage
  13. ADM 7 FP1
  14. ADM 7 for Claims FP1
  15. ADM 7 for Customer FP1
  16. ADM 7 Modeler Advantage FP1

After: Current example

The IBM SPSS development teams addressed this issue by redesigning the product packaging and collapsing separate adapter installations into a single adapter installation. Additionally, IBM SPSS C&DS Repository Server and several product adapters switched to use the IBM Installation Manager installation tool. The IBM Installation Manager tool includes:

  • Integration with IBM Passport Advantage and IBM Fix Central
  • The ability to install multiple offerings in a single installation session
  • The ability to install directly to a published service level

Using the new product packaging and IBM Installation Manager based installation, it is now possible to configure the same server topology in our before example in just one installation session. Listing 2 shows the consolidated single installation of the repository server, the three adapters, and the latest fix packs for each product.

Listing 2: Required Installs for Current Example

  1. C&DS 6.0 Repository Server + Statistics 22 Adapter + Modeler 16 Adapter + ADM 8 + latest available fix pack for each.

The time to value for this installation scenario was reduced considerably.

Configuring a single installation session by using IBM Installation Manager

The installation of the IBM SPSS Collaboration and Deployment Services (C&DS) Repository Server and the various other product adapters is completed by using the IBM Installation Manager product.

Figure 2: IBM Installation Manager main window.

For detailed installation instructions, refer to the IBM SPSS Collaboration and Deployment Services installation topics in IBM Knowledge Center. In this article, I highlight and explain IBM Installation Manager configuration options for setting up a single installation session.

To install the IBM SPSS C&DS Repository Server and various adapters together in a single installation session, you need to complete the following steps:

  1. Download and install IBM Installation Manager.
  2. Configure IBM Installation Manager so it can access the appropriate repositories.
  3. Start the installation and select "Check for Other Versions, Fixes, and Extensions"
  4. Select the IBM SPSS C&DS Repository Server and the adapter offerings that you want to install.
  5. Complete the installation process.

Let's take a closer look at each of these steps.

Step 1: Download and install IBM Installation Manager

The IBM Installation Manager product is a prerequisite to installing IBM SPSS C&DS. So, if you already have IBM Installation Manager installed, you are done and ready for the next step. If not, then you need to download and install IBM Installation Manager before you continue.

  1. Download the latest available version of IBM Installation Manager from this site:

    https://jazz.net/downloads/ibm-installation-manager/

  2. Download the latest fixes for IBM Installation Manager from the IBM Support Portal:

    https://www-947.ibm.com/support/entry/myportal/product/rational/ibm_installation_manager?productContext=-57272472#

  3. Use the detailed installation instructions in IBM Knowledge Center for IBM Installation Manager.

Step 2: Configure access to product repositories

IBM Installation Manager needs access to the product offerings that you want to install. You need access to both the GA product offerings, and the appropriate fix pack levels.

In IBM Installation Manager, you define repositories, which are the locations that contain the offerings or updates that you want to install.

If your system has access to the Internet, IBM Installation Manager has support for connecting to IBM Passport Advantage for new product installs and connecting to IBM Fix Central for service or fix installs. IBM Installation Manager installs directly from these predefined repositories.

To enable connecting to Passport Advantage, in IBM Installation Manager, click File > Preferences > Passport Advantage. Then, check the Connect to Passport Advantage check box.

Figure 3: Preference to enable connection to IBM Passport Advantage.

In addition to the built-in access to the IBM Passport Advantage or IBM Fix Central repositories, you can also configure references to your own local repository locations.

In this case, you download ESD compressed files, extract the files, and configure the IBM Installation Manager repository location to the appropriate local directory. Or, you can access the files from the media that was provided with your product purchase. You add these repository locations using the IBM Installation Manager preferences.

To add or edit local repository locations, click File > Preferences > Repositories.

Figure 4: Preference for managing service repository locations.

IBM Installation Manager now knows the locations where the files or updates for the offerings are stored.

For example, if you want to install the C&DS 7.0 Repository Server and the Modeler 17.0 adapter on Windows, and you don't plan to use the IBM Passport Advantage integration to install directly from IBM, you need to download the following two eImages:

  1. IBM SPSS Collaboration and Deployment Services Server 7.0 Multiplatform Multilingual (CN3H5ML)
  2. IBM SPSS Modeler 17.0 Collaboration and Deployment Services Adapter 7.0 Microsoft Windows Multilingual (CN3KQML)

Then, extract each of the downloaded files into a directory, and add two IBM Installation Manager repositories, one for each product offering.

Figure 5: Example of local repositories to install C&DS Repository Server and Modeler Adapter.

Step 3: Check for Other Versions, Fixes, and Extensions (optional)

If you want to install an offering directly to a particular fix level, you also need to configure access to service (fix pack) repositories in addition to the GA product repositories (which you configured in the previous step).

If you have access to the Internet, IBM Installation Manager can automatically check for available updates. Press "Install" to start the installation process, and on the resulting "Install Packages" window press the "Check for Other Versions, Fixes, and Extensions" button. This option causes IBM Installation Manager to contact IBM and check for any newer versions or fix packs that might be available for the offerings you want to install.

Figure 6: You can check for fixes when you install a product offering.

If you don't have access to the Internet and you want to install directly to a specific fix pack version, then you have some extra steps to complete. You need to locate and download the fix pack, extract the files to a local directory, and configure a repository that points at your local directory (as described in the previous step). If you configure IBM Installation Manager with both product repositories and fix pack repositories, then IBM Installation Manager will automatically detect the latest available version (that is, you will be installing your offering directly to the latest fix level) when it performs the single installation.

Step 4: Select Server and Adapters

Next, you need to select which offerings you want to install. Here, you select the IBM SPSS Collaboration and Deployment Services – Repository Server package and also select the specific adapters that you want to install.

The IBM SPSS C&DS Repository Server is a base offering and has its own installation directory, while the various adapters are extension offerings and must be installed with (or on an existing) base offering.

Figure 7: Repository Server and Modeler Adapter and PMML Adapter.

Step 5: Complete the Installation

Because you are installing multiple offerings in the same session, you will be presented with the license terms for all offerings. In this example, I have the IBM SPSS C&DS 7.0 Repository Server along with the C&DS 7.0 PMML Scoring Adapter and Modeler 17.0 Adapter, so there are three license agreements.

Figure 8: Multiple license agreements for multiple product offerings.

As previously noted, the IBM SPSS C&DS Repository Server is a base offering, so you need to provide an installation directory for only that offering. The extension offerings, the selected PMML Scoring and Modeler adapters, will be installed into the selected IBM SPSS C&DS Repository Server location.

Figure 9: Installation directory for the C&DS Repository Server.

If you already installed an IBM SPSS C&DS Repository Server, and now you were installing some adapters, this window would be used to select an existing server install (base) where you want the adapters to go. In this example, the adapters are automatically associated with the server that we are installing.

Figure 10: Summary window shows that a server and two adapters will be installed.

You review the installation information on the Summary window, and then click Install. The IBM SPSS C&DS Repository Server, along with any specified adapters, at any available fix level, will all be installed within a single installation session.

Conclusion

You can save time and effort when you set up your IBM SPSS topology by installing the C&DS Repository Server and the adapters together in a single installation session by using IBM Installation Manager. You can spend less time installing and configuring and spend more time using the products, which considerably improves your time to value.
