Five Things So-Called “Business Intelligence” Vendors Don’t Talk About

Many start-ups have made fortunes claiming to deliver “business intelligence.”   Don’t mistake these for business intelligence solutions. Business intelligence is not data discovery and it’s not trivial. Not unlike your general ledger, you deliver one version so executives can stake their reputation on its outputs. Unfortunately, some vendors don’t see the bigger picture of what’s required to make business intelligence trusted, efficient, and governed. Without this bigger picture, they create disconnected users, operating with outdated versions of data, rather than an ecosystem of collaboration. Here’s a tip: if they don’t want to talk about these five things, they may be hiding important details from you!   Don’t talk about cloud computing  One data discovery vendor announced their new European data center by saying, “… co-located facility will support users of its cloud analytics tool… “ and “The selected data center is ISO 27001 certified and has a disaster recovery site located in Munich, Germany.” Notice the words ‘co-located’ and ‘selected’ and lack of any details on square footage, quantity of servers, security staff and so forth. These firms avoid all the investments and data center details because they subcontract their cloud to third parties. They don’t want to discuss is staffing, infrastructure, and facilities because they don’t own, operate or guarantee any of it!  Using Cognos Analytics on Cloud, you get services from IBM, using its cloud facilities, from its 40,000 cloud professionals. Don’t talk about cloud security One Cognos Analytics on Cloud client inquired, “Are guards hired by you for your company or shared?” and, “Are all facilities used exclusively by your company, or are some shared?”  What BI vendors don’t want to discuss is that they have little to no staff residing inside these data centers and may have no dedicated staff for physical, network, or data security. On December 9th,  I reviewed the web pages of four so-called competitors and found of 20+ job openings no postings for security specialists.  Two of four competitors offered solutions exclusively on cloud.  Who’s keeping on top of constant security threats?   Using Cognos Analytics, you get IBM professionals who make it their full-time job to specialize in security.   (IBM had 55 job postings for under search term ‘Cloud Security’) Don’t talk about predictive analytics One data discovery vendor promotes “The analytics your customers want”, but they’ll avoid the word ‘predictive.’  Their idea of analytics entails colorful graphs of what has happened without predictions of what will happen.  They don’t want to discuss full analytic capabilities such as regression, bootstrapping, time-series analysis, and statistical modeling. They’ll likely but unable to discuss something simple like random sampling methods so you won’t process every record in your database during analysis.  These so-called “BI” vendors don’t offer predictive analytics but rely upon highly-graphical charts using frequency, mean and average. Cognos Analytics offers predictive analytics to see where you’re going, not where you’ve been. Don’t talk about cognitive capability These supposed “BI” vendors got their reputation by delivering pretty graphs but lack robust statistical features, staffing, and platform scalability to make cognitive computing a reality. Cognitive requires predictive analytics as a foundation to learn, suggest and understand.  Our competitors don’t invest into an analytics workbench; therefore, their cognitive capabilities will always be limited. Using IBM, your cognitive experiences are being built upon the proven foundations of IBM SPSS and IBM Watson. Don’t talk about data governance One cloud BI vendor gives you no option but to REPLICATE your data to the cloud, thus avoiding any benefit of using existing hardware and database investments. They spin this duplication and extra effort as, “Keep data living behind a firewall fresh using the [product] sync client. This client runs on a computer within your firewall and securely manages the communications with [product]. The sync client ‘pushes’ extracts of your on-premises data to [vendor/product] on a given schedule.”  They made all this redundancy of multiple data sources into the cloud sound so positive.   You are required to continually duplicate your on-premises data to the cloud and hope everyone run reports from the same version of data. If you want everyone to report using ‘accurate’ data, you must sync/duplicate rather often.  What’s enough: each day, each hour, each minute?  Over 90% of our Cognos Analytics on Cloud clients use the data and investments they have on-premises today without duplication. Using Cognos Analytics, you use existing on-premises database investments, use cloud-based data, or the combination of the two. If you want to create a nation of knowledge with users, and avoid these islands of dis-information, check out Cognos Analytics on Cloud or read our “Ten Differentiations” blog.

Announcing the latest Release (11.0.5) of #Cognos Analytics

Geospatial mapping features It’s been about a year since we launched Cognos Analytics to the market and we’ve continued to add more capabilities that give business users the power to create great-looking reports and dashboards themselves. We’ve enabled users to re-use content created by others—whether it is a report, dashboard or data module—so they do not need to start from scratch. We’ve also made it easier for them to tell stories with their data, share it with others and make decisions faster. And this can all happen in a trusted, managed self-service environment. The latest release of Cognos Analytics, 11.0.5, continues to add more features that allow users to quickly get the answers they need. Most notably, new mapping and visualization capabilities give a completely new perspective and clarity to analytic results. The new capabilities in Cognos Analytics include functionality that: Brings your data to life Get more insights from your data by adding mapping information to your dashboards and reports. Mapping enables you and your readers to instantly see geographic trends and patterns. Use a new visualization engine (the latest version of the IBM Rapidly Adaptive Visualization Engine 2) to improve visualizations and expand the range of chart types that are supported. Work more easily—with the ability to pin column headers and easily see and edit all filters that have been applied. Tell stories with your data—with enhancements to storytelling that let users easily create infographics and create layouts that guide the flow of the story. Makes your data work for you Add more intelligence to the data preparation process with smart modeling, a feature that guides you through the creation of a data module. Explore your data with support for Navigation paths, which enables you to define drill paths using any sequence that you want. Support content created in Cognos BI by accessing Relational Framework Manager packages in Cognos Analytics. This feature enables business users to create a dashboard off a Framework Manager package. Don't start from scratch: build upon the work of others with support for linked data modules. This feature enables data modules to be re-used for others to build new modules upon while still preserving a link to the original data module. Re-use means time savings, no duplication of effort, and the ability to create once and distribute widely while still maintaining integrity of the original data module. Provides analytics that you can trust Embed and share Cognos dashboards, stories and reports with the new custom URLs capability New visualizations types available for Reports and this includes additional properties Cognos Analytics 11.0.5 continues to add customization features. Best of BI: Ten Differentiators of Cognos Analytics on Cloud

We’re entering Year 2 of IBM Cognos Analytics on Cloud (formerly named Cognos Business Intelligence on Cloud). When we launched Cognos Analytics on Cloud, in late-March of 2015, we were late to market with our arrival but we’ve shown we could catch-up. Our decades of experience, running data centers, has taught us a few lessons of delivering applications and services that no business intelligence competitor can match. Anyone would tell you that running a (shared cloud) data center is complicated, which is why virtually all data discovery vendors AVOID it and subcontract their cloud to third-parties. We manage the people, process and promises; we know the security, platform and performance. It makes a difference! In the previous nine months, we added tens of thousands of new Cognos Analytics on Cloud users under contracts extending from one to three years in length. When each of those customers gets ready to upgrade this year, they do it on their terms/timing which far different than terms of other vendors. They ‘warn’ everyone in the (shared) platform that upgrade is coming, so you can simply prepare yourself!? There are so many differentiators for how IBM delivers Cognos Analytics on Cloud that it deserves its own blog. Differentiators of IBM Cognos Analytics on Cloud We deliver three different service-level guarantees We entitle each/every user highest solution capabilities We allow companies to turn up/down any user capability, at any time, without added cost We deliver single-tenant solutions so you avoid ‘noisy neighbors’ We offer performance guarantees whereby a client can revert back to S&S if unsatisfied We leverage your existing on-premises database investments without forcing you to ‘lift & shift’ We offer existing on-premises Cognos 10x users an opportunity to ‘Bridge to Cloud’ with dual use/entitlements (Check rules & requirements) We let you set your own schedule for Cognos upgrades, up to one year We have the richest eco-system of cloud tools, APIs, and developers at BlueMix.com We own our cloud (SoftLayer) with 30 data centers in located 15 countries For those thinking cloud is all about software and cost, there is much more to the story. It’s a service and we know how to serve clients better than anybody. If you’re a business leader considering analytics, reporting, and dashboards you can see why cloud matters. Learn more here.

Customers in Charge: Cloud and On-premises Deployment Options Fully Supported

I was recently asked about the significance of IBM Cognos Analytics’ multiple deployment options. The simple answer is that we are committed to meeting customers where they are today. Customers can deploy on-premises, on the cloud, as well as on private cloud options through Pure Systems. In the current business climate, companies are pursuing a wide range of strategies relative to cloud deployments and those strategies tend to be evolving. Some companies are opting to maintain their own infrastructure and keep deployments on-premises for the foreseeable future, while others are completely committed to full cloud deployments. The trend is more toward a gradual transition to the cloud, and we support our customers in that journey by allowing them to move piece by piece or at whatever pace fits with their strategy. IBM Cognos Analytics customers can start on-premises, move to a hybrid cloud option or to a private cloud, or back and forth among the multiple deployment options. The advantage of our cloud-hosted option is that we run the environment on behalf of customers, taking on the management, operations and providing a robust security model in which we handle the encryption of all data, whether the data is at rest or in transit. In transitioning to cloud, customers are not required to move their data or their authentication source. This allows for the maintenance of specific components of the data infrastructure on-premises—in keeping with the customer’s current cloud strategy. It also ensures that the user experience will remain consistent and that user IDs and passwords can remain the same. Minimizing or eliminating potential sources of confusion during periods of transition is critical. Customers are choosing among the various deployment options based on current comfort levels. For customers whose comfort level with the cloud is not there yet, we offer a secure and seamless transition path, along with the assurance that every option will continue to be supported at a high level.
