The RS/6000 Model 860 Notebook is the most powerful RISC-based notebook currently available from IBM! It combines desktop workstation performance, graphics capabilities, network connectivity, and industry common I/O ports to enable powerful solutions in a notebook package. With this small, rugged system, your applications are available almost anywhere.
The Model 860 comes standard with a 166MHz PowerPC 603e microprocessor, which has 16KB of instructional and 16KB of data cache plus an additional 256KB of Level 2 (L2) cache to provide even greater power.
The base Model 860 has 32MB of memory that can be expanded to 96MB to address a wide range of application requirements. It comes with a removable 1.2GB SCSI-2 internal disk drive. You can purchase additional 810MB removable disk drives that you can use, with the optional secondary hard disk drive adapter, in place of the CD-ROM in the CD-ROM bay to provide up to 2.0GB of internal disk storage.
The 12.1-inch TFT display provides excellent graphics capability. The built-in GT20 graphics adapter features video input capability with motion-video and playback functions. You can also connect the Model 860 to an external monitor (supporting up to 1280 x 1024 resolution) or projection system for impressive presentations and sales demonstrations.
The Model 860 has a space-saving keyboard with an integrated TrackPoint III* pointing device. However, a standard three-button mouse is also provided for connection to the keyboard/mouse port, or optional PS/2* miniature mouse can also be used.
Rounding out the Model 860's standard configuration are a double-speed CD-ROM drive and an 3.5-inch external diskette drive plus a power cord, battery pack, and universal AC adapter.

Product Positioning |
|
The Model 860 is high-end notebook computer. It takes many valued features of the IBM ThinkPad* and combines them with PowerPC technology to provide a workstation-class notebook system.
The Notebook 860's great performance, graphics capability, and mobile packaging makes it an attractive system for application development and industry-specific solutions, such as graphical information systems that require onsite map viewing and analysis, onsite consulting for Internet Web page construction, network design, and application development.
In the medical field, this notebook can be an effective tool for hospital patient care systems, telemedicine, remote imaging, and diagnostic applications.
As a great portable sales tool, the Model 860 can display colorful
sales presentations and demonstrations. It is also easily
transported to remote field sites for data acquisition and
analysis as required in the petroleum industry or many
government applications.

(For IBM US, No Longer Available as of November 11, 1997)
Feature 0001 may be used for MES ordering. This feature prevents configuration checking and allows "bulk quantity" ordering. It does not have to be repeated for subsequent MES orders for the same machine.
(For IBM US, No Longer Available as of November 11, 1997)
Feature 5005 indicates that customer desires software ordered to be pre-loaded. The software has to be ordered separately.
The following is a list of all feature codes in numeric order.
Attributes, as defined in the following feature descriptions, state the interaction of requirements among features.
Minimums and maximums are the absolute limits for a single feature without regard to interaction with other features. The maximum valid quantity for MES orders may be different than for initial orders. The maximums listed below refer to the largest quantity of these two possibilities.
The order type defines if a feature can be ordered only on initial orders, only on MES orders, on both initial and MES orders, or if a feature is supported on a model due to a model conversion. Supported features cannot be ordered on the converted model, only left on or removed from the converted model.
(For IBM US, No Longer Available as of November 11, 1997)
This feature specifies that the system will receive special request services from the Center for Customized Solutions (CCS)
Feature 0986 is available only on the initial plant order.
