The RISC System/6000 POWERstation/POWERserver 580 system supports the customer's business objectives by providing a high performance, price competitive workstation and server solution for compute-intensive technical applications or multi-user commercial applications. The POWERstation/POWERserver 580 with its 62.5 MHz POWER processor satisfies the most stringent of these workstation/server applications. New high speed (up to 80MB/sec) Micro Channel, high capacity memory, disk drives and the integrated SCSI-1 adapter, coupled with a wide variety of optional features, including graphics, communications and storage devices, are available to configure a robust system for a wide range of business solutions.
The POWERstation/POWERserver 580 system maintains compatibility with AIX Version 3 for RISC System/6000 operating system, application portability and high throughput levels. The POWERstation/POWERserver 580, and AIX Version 3 for RISC System/6000 operating system conform to many of the industry standards in the open system environment -- a key factor in enabling customers to develop business solutions.
Binary compatibility of the RISC System/6000 POWERstation/POWERserver 580 with previously announced POWERstation/POWERserver models serves to protect the customer's investment in software and hardware.
Model conversions utilizing the new processor are provided. The POWERstation/POWERserver 530H, 550 and 560 can be converted to a POWERstation/POWERserver 580F (model 580 capability). To help protect the customers investment, the migration of existing IBM fixed disks and most installed features are supported on the POWERstation/POWERserver 580F.
The 580 and the AIX Version 3.2.3 for RISC System/6000 operating system offer interoperability with other IBM and other vendor host systems, helping to protect the customer's principal investment.
The RISC System/6000 POWERstation/POWERserver 580's 62.5 MHz processor offers substantial performance gains over earlier RISC System/6000 processors. The model 580 enables the end user to improve throughput of a given task or additional users can be added to the network.
The 580 system also has expanded power capabilities:
Customers can select AIXwindows Environment/6000 which includes the versatile OSF/Motif(TM) graphics user interface. This provides the user with a iconic view of the AIX file system and allows the user to manipulate the file system through icons. InfoExplorer(TM) support offers the user flexible access to online documentation using task index, hypertext jump points and search features.
A software preload feature is available to allow the user to IPL the system after initial hardware installation.
The RISC System/6000 POWERstation/POWERserver 580 is designed to grow with the customer's needs. The standard memory of 64MB can be increased to 1 GB (eight 128MB memory cards). Since an integrated SCSI-1 adapter for fixed disk and media attachment is standard, all eight Micro Channel slots are available for current and future expansion. A wide variety of optional features such as graphics and communications subsystems, and storage devices are available for the customer's expansion requirements. The standard internal SCSI-2 fixed disk capacity is 2GB and can be a maximum of 7.2GB (three 2.4GB SCSI-2 disk drives). The 580 system can support up to four 9333 Serial Deskside Expansion Units (17.1GB) and up to three 9334 SCSI Model 500 Deskside Expansion Units (25.7GB) for a maximum of 42.8GB external storage and a total system maximum of 50.0GB storage.

EMC Conformance Classification:
AIX Version 3.2.3 for RISC System/6000 (5756-030), ordered separately.
Customers with the POWERstation/POWERserver 530H, 550 or 560 will be able to convert systems to the new POWERstation/POWERserver 580F processor (580 capability). IBM fixed disk configurations supported by the POWERstation/POWERserver 530H, 550 or 560 upon announcement will be supported by the POWERstation/POWERserver 580F.
All Micro Channel cards, external and internal devices supported by the POWERstation/POWERserver 580 upon announcement will be supported by the POWERstation/POWERserver 580F.
The POWERstation/POWERserver 580F requires a minimum of 64MB of memory. Memory increments are available in multiples of 8, 16, 32, 64 and 128MB with a maximum of 1GB. Memory cards must be installed in pairs. Additional memory must be purchased to meet the 64MB minimum configuration.
System performance of the POWERstation/POWERserver 580F relative to the new POWERstation/POWERserver 580 will depend upon the installed fixed disks. Customers whose converted machine contains only IBM fixed disks supported by the new POWERstation/POWERserver 580 should not experience any performance degradation. Retention in the converted machines of IBM fixed disks not supported by the new POWERstation/POWERserver 580 may yield a degradation in system performance relative to the POWERstation/POWERserver 580, depending on the nature of customer's applications (compute intensive versus I/O intensive). This offers a high degree of flexibility in increasing the performance level of the system while helping customers with compute intensive applications to take advantage of the performance of the new processor while protecting their investment in fixed disks.
The Model Conversion MESs contain some or all of the following items and are ordered through the HONE configurator.
There are 8 memory card slots. While converting to the new POWERstation/POWERserver 580F, the system will contain the same number of memory cards and megabytes per card as in the original system.
Maximum memory capacity of a conversion to a POWERstation/POWERserver 580F will be dependent on the original memory configuration of the converted POWERstation/POWERserver 550, 560 or 530H. The customer may choose to replace/augment the converted memory by purchasing additional higher density memory cards to take full advantage of the maximum capacity of 1GB.
Note: a Maximum of 1 GB memory becomes possible with the availability of the 128 MB memory(feature codes 4090 and 4092), planned for General Availability on January 29, 1993
Customers will be responsible for procurring the additional memory necessary to attain the 64MB minimum memory requirement and to attain any of the larger memory configurations supported by the POWERstation/POWERserver 580F, to the extent the memory is larger than the customer's current memory.
The remote power capabilities of the Model 580 are not supported on the Model 580F.
The IBM 4869 5.25-inch External Diskette Drive is not supported on the Model 580F.
No cables required
For problem analysis, the IBM RISC System/6000 POWERstation/POWERserver 580 diagnostic programs, preloaded on the system, provide console routines that lead a user through problem determination and helps provide direction to resolve problems.
