The user can quickly become familiar with IBM Works because all the
common facilities used by the five modules are implemented
identically - in fact the same code is used. You only need to
learn one module to know the basics of them all.
The user interface has been carefully designed to be both
attractive and productive. In each module common elements recur
- status line, ribbon bar, font control, file handling, etc. The
movable Style palette provides rapid access to character styles,
cutting down on mouse actions and keystrokes. Further
productivity gains can be achieved by use of the Macros facility -
where any combination of keystrokes can be recorded, and then
played back at will.
Drawing tools are integrated within most of the modules - so no
time is wasted in invoking a separate draw tool. A full function
Spell Checker lets you verify and correct the spelling of your
documents; the dictionary also provides synonyms and hyphenation
support. Automatic generation and direct manipulation of tables
in the Word Processor provides a fast and effective way of
incorporating tabular data. The word processor also boasts a
fully editable print preview mode - a feature common in desktop
publishing packages, but rare in the word processor world.
The Multiple Document Interface (MDI) allows several files from
one application module - or a mixture of different modules - to
be open at one time. Dynamically linked data in the OS/2
version and Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) in the
Windows (TM) version provides
a compound document environment, not just with the IBM Works
applications but also with external, OLE-enabled programs within
a Windows environment.
Context Sensitive Help provides immediate assistance and
minimises the need to refer to the product documentation.
In addition IBM Works for OS/2 version provides additional
productivity benefits by exploiting multi-threading, and drag and
drop of documents to Workplace Shell folders.
Growth Enablement
The individual IBM Works applications will provide many users with
all the functionality they need, but where extra power is
required the
flexibility of the OS/2 Presentation Manager and Windows 3.1
environments makes it easy to grow your system. You can add a
high-end word processor, spreadsheet, or database product that
runs in the same environment, and use it in conjunction with
the remaining IBM Works modules. IBM Works's support of
industry-standard data formats makes such a step painless.
Spelling, synonym, and hyphenation support uses the IBM Desktop
Dictionaries.
And twin OS/2 and Windows 3.1 versions of the product allows for
easy upgrading of operating system.
Business Solutions
Professional-looking documents containing tables, charts, and
graphics are easily produced in IBM Works's Word Processor. A wide
range of database applications can be constructed within the Data
Filer module, with the large field sizes (up to 32K characters),
graphics capabilities, multi-page forms, and multi-form databases
providing a great deal of flexibility. Label printing too is
well supported, and the Report module allows rapid production of
attractive columnar reports. IBM Works's spreadsheet and charting
modules enable the user to manipulate figures quickly and easily,
and to produce graphical output of the results.
Systems Management
Named styles for character attributes make it much easier for a
group of users to create documents with a consistent appearance.
The Data Filer's support for dBase IV format allows users to
access large databases maintained on a department level, with
the ability to hide particular fields and to restrict updating of
records.
Investment Protection
Built-in import/export capabilities support a variety of industry
standard file formats. Word processor formats include
Lotus Ami Pro,
RFT/DCA, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Word for Windows and
WordPerfect. Database formats
include dBase IV. Spreadsheet formats include Lotus WKS and WK1.
Graphics formats include TIFF and CGM.
IBM Works has many features that are common to all the modules,
allowing users to quickly become familiar with basic actions
in all parts of the program. The use of core code to provide
these facilities to the individual applications achieves a
high level of integration within IBM Works.
Complete control of character attributes: font, point-size,
bold, underlined, italic, strikethrough, superscript,
subscript, and colour. Most of these can be accessed direct
from the ribbon bar in each module.
Character styles - assign names to combinations of
attributes and access them from a floating Styles Palette.
Draw graphics - lines, rectangles, rounded rectangles,
ellipses, regular polygons, and text can be drawn anywhere on
the page. These tools may be accessed from a floating Draw
Palette. Line and fill colour, fill pattern, and line type
may all be modified.
Multiple Document Interface (MDI) - allows several files
from one application module - or a mixture of different
modules - to be open at one time
Dynamically linked data
- charts and sections of
spreadsheets may be embedded in other modules, permitting
compound documents to be created. Double-clicking on the
embedded object in the 'client' module invokes the 'server'
module to allow editing of the object. And this facility
also works with external, OLE-enabled programs in the Windows
environment.
Macros - any combination of keystrokes can be recorded, and then
played back at will. Macros may also be edited.
Ribbon Bar - containing icons for quick access to character
attributes and module-specific functions.
Status Line - displaying Dynamic Information Line text on the
currently selected menu option, system date, and other status
information.
File handling - allows files to be sorted by name or date,
and a description can be assigned to all files saved in
IBM Works's native formats.
Preferences - system directories, measurement units, and the
appearance of the product (choose between the 'classic'
Presentaion Manager/Windows look, or an attractive 'etched'
design).
Page Setup - allows paper size and orientation to be set, and
page margins to be defined. Each module can have a different
setting - making it possible to print a spreadsheet in
landscape orientation and a document in portrait orientation
without having to change printer settings.
Control of text formatting is made easy with the Styles palette
and ribbon bar icons for character and paragraph formatting.
More complex documents can be created by: adding pictures;
drawing vector graphics directly onto the page; including charts
or spreadsheets as OLE objects; and by using IBM Works's powerful
tables facility. Layout operations are assisted by the fully
editable print preview display, and a wide range of direct
manipulation features: page margins, indents, tabs, headers and
footers, object positioning and sizing, table handling, and
palette positioning. Spell-checking, synonyms, and hyphenation
provide extensive linguistics support, and there is mail-merge
with Data Filer databases.
Ruler provides for direct manipulation of tabs and indents
Layout mode - fully editable print preview display. All the
facilities of the standard 1:1 view, plus direct
manipulation
of margins and option for two-up display (also fully
editable).
Tables support - automatically generate tables from
spreadsheet or other clipboard data, or create blank,
pre-ruled tables. Cells expand to accommodate text entered,
and new table rows are generated as the user tabs out of the
last cell. Full support for character formatting and direct
manipulation.
Import/export text in Lotus Ami Pro, RFT/DCA,
Microsoft Word, Microsoft Word for Windows, RTF, WordPerfect,
ASCII and ANSI formats
Import graphics in a variety of vector and bitmap graphics,
paste pictures from the clipboard, or draw directly onto the
document page using IBM Works's vector graphic tools. Direct
manipulation of size and position of graphics.
Paste in active Chart objects.
Text flow control around tables and pictures - select from:
flow to left, flow to right, flow around (no text on either
side), and anchoring table to text (so that it moves with the
text).
Spell check feature - supports multiple language dictionaries
and user dictionaries. IBM Works uses the IBM Desktop Dictionaries,
and additional language dictionaries can be
purchased for use with the product.
Synonyms/Hyphenation - IBM Works will suggest synonyms for a
word, and can also find hyphenation points. A complete
document can be hyphenated with no user intervention. Again,
the IBM Desktop Dictionaries are used. (The Finnish dictionary does
not provide synonyms).
Headers/Footers: direct entry in appropriate area of page.
Page numbering can be begin on first or second page, and can
be seeded with a starting number.
Tabs - left, right, centre and decimal
Search/replace feature - can search for controls as well as
text
Mail merge capability - with databases in Data Filer or dBase
format.
All the basic spreadsheet functions you'd expect, plus the ease
of use that only a windowing environment allows. A broad range of
formatting controls are provided, with a ribbon bar allowing fast
access to charting, SUM function, character attributes, and other
high-use options. Spreadsheet data may be hot-linked with
charts and with word processor tables, and charts can be embedded
within a spreadsheet.
Create charts directly from spreadsheet data, or by using Chart's
own data table. A range of chart types and display options are
available, and the user can draw directly onto the chart page,
and via dynamically linked data put multiple charts onto one
page. As elsewhere
in IBM Works, direct manipulation figures prominently. The finished
chart can be then be printed, or embedded in a Word Processor
document or a spreadsheet.

records. Large text fields, of up to 32K bytes, are supported,
and many options can be applied to fields. Extensions allow for
label printing and the creation of multiple forms for a single
database file. Indices are supported, as is conditional display
and printing of records.
Create attractive columnar reports, with direct control over
fonts and layout. As you choose fields and options the
report is created on-screen, giving immediate feedback on the
effect of your actions, and there is direct manipulation of
columns and titles. Of course, if the database file included
graphics these are also shown in the report.
Interactive report generation - report is built on-screen as
the user modifies design
