The new coupling technology facilitates data sharing without partitioning data between multiple systems, allowing nondisruptive incremental growth. Use of the Coupling Facility by software subsystems, like CICS(TM) or IMS, ensures the integrity and consistency of data throughout the Parallel Sysplex. In addition, workloads can be dynamically balanced across systems with the help of the MVS workload manager and subsystems using the Coupling Facility.
Multisystem data sharing results in greater capacity against a single large database than previous single-image systems. The data does not need to be partitioned or repartitioned to add another system; the data is accessible to all systems.
The new coupling technology allows up to 32 MVS/ESA images to concurrently access the same data. This allows for easier and more flexible growth without splitting data and applications across multiple single-image systems. Total systems capacity can be increased with cost-competitive increments to meet virtually any level of business volume or application growth.
Coupling Links are used to connect the Coupling Facility to coupling-capable systems. The connections are made with new high-speed fiber optic cables used for data and message traffic between the Coupling Facility and MVS/ESA images.
The 9674 Coupling Facility with Coupling Links can support multiple
MVS/ESA images running in Logical Partitions on the same 9021
711-based processor, 9121 511-based processor, or S/390 Parallel
Transaction Server 9672 processor, or MVS/ESA images running on
multiple coupling-capable processors.
Continuous Availability
The new coupling technology provides more flexibility for meeting availability requirements. Systems can be configured to reduce single points of failure to reduce the occurrence of both scheduled and unscheduled outages. The new Parallel Sysplex will reduce the impact of losing one system.
With the new coupling technology, high levels of availability can be configured. The cost of real continuous availability, compared to standby backup systems, will be considerably lower. The options for making trade-offs between cost and availability have increased. Availability is delivered by the new Parallel Sysplex and not by a single MVS/ESA image within the sysplex.
Multiple Coupling Facilities can be used to connect to each MVS/ESA system. This provides considerable flexibility to configure shared data systems that are fault tolerant. When configured with multiple Coupling Facilities, scheduled outages to the Coupling Facility are fully transparent to the end user and unscheduled outages are reduced or transparent to the end user.
Multiple Coupling Links can be connected to each MVS/ESA system. This increases availability by eliminating a single point of failure.
Coupling-capable systems running MVS/ESA can be added or removed dynamically from the Coupling Facility. The Coupling Facility, configured correctly at installation, will allow Coupling Links to be hot plugged later, allowing horizontal growth without disruption.
The Coupling Facility has N+1 power capable of supporting a CEC for most power supply failures without interrupting system operation. Also, the Coupling Facility has a power backup capability that provides power to run the CEC for a short period of time. In addition, the Coupling Facility has a "power save state," which keeps only the memory active, and an external DC power connection to minimize risk of extended power outages.
Storage background scrubbing reduces system failure due to
accumulation of multiple storage errors. The system continually
scrubs the arrays for soft errors, makes corrections to these errors,
and records information about hard errors.
Protection of Investments in S/390
The new coupling technology protects investments in S/390. The Coupling Facility attaches to the current 9021 711-based processors and 9121 511-based processors, providing horizontal growth. It can attach up to 32 MVS/ESA images, including the new S/390 Parallel Transaction Server 9672 processors.
Coupling Links use fiber optic cables that offer installation management and systems management benefits similar to those provided by ESCON(R) channels with regard to cable size, weight, and cost. The Coupling Links are Fiber Channel Standard (FCS) level 0 compliant.
When attached with high-speed links to coupling-capable processors
running MVS/ESA 5.1 and proper levels of subsystems, the Coupling
Facility provides a coupled systems environment that will run
existing transaction processing applications with minimal or no
changes while getting all the benefit of parallel processing.

The coupling technology includes the Coupling Facility connected to coupling-capable processors with Coupling Links (high-speed links). The coupling-capable processors run MVS/ESA Version 5 Release 1 together with subsystems that exploit coupling services.
ESCON I/O and the interconnect technologies are recommended in the Parallel Sysplex for increased connectivity and access to large amounts of data. In addition, they offer improved availability.
The entry configuration and optional features for the Coupling Facility 9674 Model C01 shipped or upgraded from the plant follow.
The entry configuration is a one-way CEC with 128MB of memory, two Coupling Links (either type), and a console.
Central Electronics Complex (CEC): The Coupling Facility contains one processor card which is upgradeable.
Up to four consoles can be attached to the Coupling Facility. The additional consoles can be used for backup or if a second console is required in another location.
Central Storage: The Coupling Facility requires two equally sized storage cards to be plugged at all times. All storage upgrades require removal of the two existing storage cards and installation of two new storage cards. All removed storage cards become the property of IBM and must be returned to IBM.
In the Coupling Facility one Intersystem Channel Adapter (#0014) is required for every two Coupling Links (#0007 or #0008). The Intersystem Channel Adapter is not hot pluggable, but the Coupling Links are. Additional Intersystem Channel Adapters and Coupling Links can be ordered to reduce outages. For details on hot plugging, refer to the System Overview document (GA22-7148). Two types of Coupling Links are available:
Battery Backup (#2011): Uses internal batteries to provide power during a power outage. The batteries will last up to 3.5 minutes while the Coupling Facility continues to run. In the power save state, Coupling Facility function is suspended but the internal batteries preserve Coupling Facility memory for up to 80 minutes. The power save state will be available fourth quarter 1994.
Note: If an uninterrupted power supply (UPS) is installed that supplies power to the Coupling Facility during power failures, the battery backup feature would not be needed but would be recommended.
In addition, the battery backup feature provides an external 24 volt DC supply connection. EXIDE Electronic has developed an Auxiliary DC Power Module (ADMOD) that can attach to the external 24 volt DC supply provided by the battery backup feature. The ADMOD extends the battery backup capability up to 48 hours. Your IBM representative can refer to the availability package on Market Tools for more details on ADMOD.
The 9674 comes with Graphic Gray side covers and Black front and back covers. Other colors will be handled by the RPQ process.
Software Requirements: There are no programming requirements for the Coupling Facility. The Coupling Facility communicates with the MVS/ESA images and subsystems running on attached 9021 711-based processors, 9121 511-based processors, and S/390 Parallel Transaction Server 9672 processors.
MVS/ESA Version 5 Release 1 is required on the coupling-capable processors attached to a Coupling Facility, together with the proper levels of subsystems that exploit the Coupling Facility. These subsystems include:
Compatibility: The Coupling Facility functions provided in the 9674 Coupling Facility are available on a S/390 Parallel Transaction Server 9672 processor with one or more CECs running the coupling facility control code (CFCC) or 9021 711-based processors with SEC 228270 with a processor logically partitioned to run CFCC. The 9121 511-based processors support only the Integrated Coupling Migration Facility (ICMF).
The ICMF provides the CFCC functions without Coupling Links. It is intended only for migration and testing of software needed for coupling systems and is limited to MVS/ESA images running on a single physical system image. ICMF runs on the 9021 711-based processors, 9121 511-based processors, and S/390 Parallel Transaction Server 9672, but not on a 9674 Coupling Facility.
The coupling-capable S/390 processors include 9021 711-based processors, 9121 511-based processors, and the S/390 Parallel Transaction Server 9672.
Sysplex Timer(R) facilities are required to synchronize time-of-day (TOD) clocks if multiple processors are coupled in the new Parallel Sysplex. This does not apply to the Coupling Facility itself. The Sysplex Timer can be located up to 3 km from any of the coupled systems.
For highest availability and best performance, two Coupling Facilities are recommended. Each Coupling Facility would be linked to all the coupling-capable processors in the sysplex. If one Coupling Facility would fail, the other Coupling Facility would recover its work and keep running.
The Hardware Management Console provides a single point of control for the Coupling Facility. One Hardware Management Console can control both a customer's 9674 Coupling Facility and the Parallel Transaction Server 9672 processors. The Hardware Management Console Application provides automatic identification of hardware elements it can manage, customer grouping support, aggregated and individual real-time system status via colors, consolidated hardware message support, consolidated operating system message support, consolidated service support, and hardware commands targeted at a single system, multiple systems, or a customer group of systems.
Target System Control Facility (TSCF), an MVS-based and
NetView(R)-based operations management product, provides centralized,
enterprise-wide monitoring and control of the S/390 Parallel
Transaction Server 9672, the S/390 Coupling Facility 9674, and other
S/390 processors. The Hardware Management Console is still required
with TSCF on the S/390 Parallel Transaction Server 9672 and S/390
Coupling Facility 9674. Additional information on TSCF support is
available in the TSCF Planning and Installation manual (GC28-1063).
