Overview

DB2 on Cloud provides a database as a service on your choice of either IBM SoftLayer® global cloud infrastructure or alternative cloud service provider. It offers the rich features of an on-premises DB2 deployment without the cost, complexity, and risk of managing your own infrastructure. Based on DB2 software, DB2 on Cloud can support multiple database instances that can either be configured as analytic warehouses or optimized for online transaction processing applications.

While DB2 on Cloud is configured to support creating and managing databases for online transaction processing applications, it gives you the flexibility to create your own instances for analytic or mixed workloads. Use of this offering can reduce the time required to provision and deploy DB2 so that more resources can be devoted to developing new solutions and innovation.

dashDB™ Entry and Enterprise Transactional plans both provide a dedicated instance of a managed transactional databases for the IBM Bluemix® application development environments. The entry plan provides solid performance on virtual private nodes at an affordable price point. The enterprise plan provides robust performance on bare metal nodes for more demanding application workloads. Both plans offer differentiated capabilities when compared with competitive offerings.

As a hosted offering, DB2 on Cloud gives you the same control over your data in the Cloud as the IBM on-premises DB2 system:

Provides an IBM-managed DB2 database with encryption at rest and SSL configured, SSAE SOC2 Type 1, and ISO 27001 security compliances.
Data load options including: load from desktop, swift, and S3.
Includes a console with user management, DB usage, and system usage monitoring.
Allows connection via CLPPlus, ODBC/CLI, JDBC, .NET, and REST.

Key prerequisites

A terminal with Internet connectivity is required to access the DB2 on Cloud offering. Ongoing administration can be done locally on the hosted system using tools, such as telnet, that allow connection to the database server machine. Alternatively, users can download, install, and run utilities like IBM Data Server Runtime Client or the IBM Data Server Client (not included as part of the service).

A web browser with Internet connectivity is required to access the dashDB Transactional plan offering.
