The Program
number section is revised.
Overview |
IBM® WebSphere® Application Server family of products offers multiple configuration options and support for multiple business models and deployment platforms. It also supports a wide range of scenarios, from projects with no upfront budget, to simple administration of a single server environment, to a clustered, highly available, high-volume environment with Intelligent Management services.
The WebSphere Application Server Family Edition brings together the following key WebSphere Application Server products that are bundled under a common license entitlement.
- WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment, which includes the Network Deployment editions of both the full profile and Liberty profile application servers
- WebSphere Application Server, which includes the single server editions of both the full profile and Liberty profile application servers
- WebSphere Application Server Liberty Core
WebSphere Application Server Family Edition gives you the flexibility to deploy the application server edition that is specific to your business needs. It also allows you to easily adjust the mix of products deployed from the bundle as the needs of your business change.
The charge metric for the Family Edition bundle is Processor Value Unit (PVU). However, because the value provided by each product in this bundle is different, there are different relationships between a Family Edition PVU, and a PVU of each bundled product.
- One PVU of WebSphere Application Server Family Edition provides entitlement for one PVU of WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment. A purchase of 100 PVUs of Family Edition provides entitlement to deploy 100 PVUs of WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment.
- One PVU of WebSphere Application Server Family Edition provides entitlement for four PVUs of WebSphere Application Server. A purchase of 100 PVUs of Family Edition provides entitlement to deploy 400 PVUs of WebSphere Application Server.
- One PVU of WebSphere Application Server Family Edition provides entitlement for eight PVUs of WebSphere Application Server Liberty Core. A purchase of 100 PVUs of Family Edition provides entitlement to deploy 800 PVUs of WebSphere Application Server Liberty Core.
For more information on these WebSphere Application Server products, refer to the Product positioning section of Software Announcement 213-137, dated April 23, 2013.
WebSphere Application Server Family Edition entitlements allow you to deploy a combination of the products in this bundle. For example, a purchase of 300 PVUs of Family Edition provides entitlement to deploy:
- 100 PVUs of WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment
- 400 PVUs of WebSphere Application Server
- 800 PVUs of WebSphere Application Server Liberty Core, at the same time
The real benefit of this flexibility is that deployments can be revised as the needs of your business change.
As another example, if you need some additional WebSphere Application Server Liberty Core entitlements to begin a new project, and you have some WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment entitlements that are currently unused or can be consolidated, you can reallocate available capacity within Family Edition from other WebSphere Application Server products to WebSphere Application Server Liberty Core. The only requirement here is that you do not exceed the purchased entitlements for all WebSphere Application Server products.

Planning information
Examples of deploying WebSphere Application Server Family Edition entitlements
One Family Edition PVU can be used to deploy:
- One Websphere Application Server Network Deployment PVU, or
- Four WebSphere Application Server PVUs, or
- Eight WebSphere Application Server Liberty Core PVUs
Customer One. Purchased 500 WebSphere Application Server Family Edition PVUs. This means they can deploy one of the following:
- 500 WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment PVUs
- 2000 WebSphere Application Server PVUs
- 4000 WebSphere Application Server Liberty Core PVUs
Customer One can also mix and match, so that the same 500 Family Edition PVUs could be deployed as follows:
- 200 WebSphere Application Server Network Development PVUs (requires 200 Family Edition PVUs - that is 1:1 ratio)
- 700 WebSphere Application Server PVUs (requires 175 Family Edition PVUs - that is 4:1 ratio)
- 1000 WebSphere Application Server Liberty Core PVUs (requires 125 Family Edition PVUs - that is 8:1 ratio)
Total WebSphere Application Server Family Edition PVUs deployed = 500 (200+175+125)
Customer Two. How does a Compliance Audit with Family Edition work?
In this scenario, Customer Two has purchased:
- 5000 PVUs of WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment (specific product) entitlements
- 8000 PVUs of WebSphere Application Server (specific product) entitlements
- 4500 PVUs of WebSphere Application Server Family Edition
IBM License Metric Tool (LMT) system scans show:
- 5500 WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment PVUs installed
- 7700 WebSphere Application Server PVUs installed
- 30000 WebSphere Application Server Liberty Core PVUs installed
The Compliance Reconciliation process is as follows:
Step 1. Allocate product specific entitlements (that is entitlements that are not Family Edition) against installation needs.
- Customer Two has purchased 5000 WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment product specific entitlements, which are applied against the 5,500 WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment installed PVUs. This leaves 500 WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment PVUs to be covered by Family Edition entitlements.
- Customer Two has purchased 8000 WebSphere Application Server specific entitlements, which are applied against the 7700 installed PVUs. This leaves 300 PVU entitlements. These 300 PVUs cannot be applied elsewhere, but could be "traded-up" to Family Edition entitlements. Refer to the #eordinfx/A409 section.
- Customer Two has not purchased any WebSphere Application Server Liberty Core product specific entitlements, so the 30000 WebSphere Application Server Liberty Core installed PVUs need to be covered by Family Edition entitlements.
Step 2. Allocate the remaining required entitlements to Family Edition, of which Customer Two has purchased 4500 PVU entitlements.
- Need 500 Family Edition PVU entitlements to cover remaining 500 WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment installed PVUs (at a 1:1 ratio).
- Need 0 Family Edition PVU entitlements to cover WebSphere Application Server installed PVUs (Customer Two is not over deployed).
- Need 3750 Family Edition PVU entitlements to cover 30,000 WebSphere Application Server Liberty Core installed PVUs (at an 8:1 ratio, 30,000 divided by 8 = 3,750)
In this example, Customer Two needs 4250 (500 + 3,750) Family Edition PVU entitlements and has purchased 4500 Family Edition PVU entitlements. Therefore, the customer is in compliance and has 250 extra Family Edition PVU entitlements.

IBM WebSphere Application Server Family Edition | 5725-Y70 | Processor Value Unit (PVU) |
PVU is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. The number of PVU entitlements required is based on the processor technology (defined within the PVU table by processor value, brand, type, and model number at the website below) and the number of processors made available to the program. IBM continues to define a processor, for the purpose of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip (socket). A dual-core processor chip, for example, has two processor cores. The PVU table can be found at
Licensee can deploy the program using either full capacity licensing or virtualization capacity (sub-capacity) licensing according to the Passport Advantage® Sub-Capacity Licensing Terms (refer to the web page below). If using full capacity licensing, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores* in the physical hardware environment made available to or managed by the program, except for those servers from which the program has been permanently removed. If using virtualization capacity licensing, licensee must obtain entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores made available to or managed by the program, as defined according to the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules at* An activated processor core is a processor core that is available for use in a physical or virtual server, regardless of whether the capacity of the processor core can be or is limited through virtualization technologies, operating system commands, BIOS settings, or similar restrictions.
Notes
- Some programs may require licenses for the program and what is being managed. In that case, the following applies. In addition to the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
- Some programs may be licensed on a managed basis only. In that case, the following applies. Instead of the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
- A few programs on an exception basis may be licensed on a referenced basis. In that case, the following applies. Rather than obtaining entitlements for the activated processor cores available to the program, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the environment made available to the referenced program as if the program itself were executing everywhere the referenced program was executing, independent of the basis on which the referenced program is licensed.
