- Cipher suites AES 128 and AES 256 for CICS web support to allow for enhanced Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) connectivity.
- Millisecond option added to various EXEC CICS commands.
- OSLEVEL option added to EXEC CICS INQUIRE SYSTEM command.
IBM TCP/IP for z/VSE V2.1 for enhanced security
- A firewall shield helps to protect the z/VSE system from unauthorized access:
- This function is a white-list-based firewall implementation which means that access is denied unless an IP address is explicitly allowed to communicate with the z/VSE system.
- A configuration phase holds the valid IP addresses with allowed TCP or UDP ports, and ICMP (PING).
- The firewall can be activated during TCP/IP startup. It can be operated in 'FAIL' or 'WARN' mode.
- When operating in 'FAIL' mode, any datagrams received from a remote IP address that is not defined in the firewall configuration phase will be discarded, and a violation message will be issued.
- When operating in 'WARN' mode, the same violation message will occur but the associated datagrams will not be discarded. This mode can be helpful for the initial setup to get information about IP addresses and ports.
- In addition, the new version contains internal processing improvements
as well as many functional enhancements based upon user requests.
These are:
- External partition socket requests use cross memory services, which may improve performance and reduce system GETVIS requirements.
- New utilities are provided to externalize applications for automation and TN3270 services. TN3270 services can now be processed outside the TCP/IP stack in an external TN3270 server. Multiple TN3270 servers can run at the same time. Of course, the TN3270 server within the TCP/IP partition can still be used.
- The TLS/SSL cryptography has been enhanced to support RFC5746. This allows the usage of TLS extensions to prevent the handshake renegotiation security exposure.
- IBM TCP/IP for z/VSE V2.1 is a new level set that integrates all prior maintenance. It replaces IBM TCP/IP for VSE/ESA V1.5F.
IBM IPv6/VSE V1.2 for enhanced security and increased network availability
These are some of the highlights of the new IPv6/VSE release:
- Firewall support to help secure the TCP/IP stack and thus protect
the z/VSE system:
- The firewall function examines IPv4 packets and IPv6 Ethernet frames for basic types of information. The source IP address, packet protocol, TCP or UDP port numbers, and ICMP message type and code can be verified and processing accepted or denied.
- A z/VSE library member holds the firewall rules. By default, the firewall is enabled. However, the default firewall rules allow all packets to be processed by the stack. When a packet is denied processing by the stack, it is dropped. This is usually referred to as 'stealth' mode or firewall stealth operation. No response to the packet is generated.
- There are two methods for defining firewall rules. The first method is to allow only the types of traffic you want and deny everything else. The second method is to deny those types of packets you do not want and allow all the remaining traffic.
- Firewall commands specifying IPv6 are ignored by the IPv4 stack, and vice versa.
- Automatic OSA-Express device failover using HOTSWAP devices for
high availability:
- Users can automatically recover from OSA-Express device failures by utilizing a backup HOTSWAP device. This can dramatically reduce the duration of network interruptions.
- Improved stack CPU optimization:
- This can result in reduced CPU utilization by the stack partitions and thus may improve network throughput.
- Improved SSL support including TLS V1.2 and Diffie Hellman (DH)/Elliptic
Curve Cryptography (ECC) sockets:
- IBM IPv6/VSE V1.2 supports the latest updates in the IBM OpenSSL implementation, including support for TLS V1.2 and DH/ECC SSL socket, and all the latest security fixes.
- The SSL Proxy and Automatic TLS facilities support establishing up to 16 SSL sockets concurrently. This can dramatically improve performance for applications that establish multiple connections to z/VSE including TN3270(E), CICS, and web services applications.
- Virtual IP address support using virtual network interfaces:
- IBM IPv6/VSE V1.2 supports having multiple IP addresses defined for a single network interface through the use of virtual network interfaces. The virtual network interfaces share a single OSA Express® device.
MQ Client Trigger Monitor
IBM WebSphere MQ for z/VSE V3.0 has been withdrawn from service, effective September 30, 2015. However, the IBM WebSphere MQ Client for VSE will continue to be available.
Using the WebSphere MQ Client for VSE, a WebSphere MQ application can interact by means of the MQ API with one or more WebSphere MQ servers on any supported platform and connect to their queue managers. Therefore, the MQ Client for VSE may be an alternative for clients currently using the WebSphere MQ for z/VSE server.
Unlike the MQ Client packages that are available for Linux, z/OS, and other platforms, the WebSphere MQ Client for VSE does not contain a trigger monitor. Triggering is a must-have feature to process asynchronous messages. It allows the system to start (trigger) an application when a message arrives on a queue of a WebSphere MQ server.
The MQ Client Trigger Monitor closes this gap. It triggers a z/VSE CICS application when messages arrive on a queue of a WebSphere MQ Server. Adding trigger functionality for the WebSphere MQ Client for VSE fulfills user requirements and may enable clients to use the WebSphere MQ client instead of the WebSphere MQ Server on z/VSE.
Networking enhancements
Configurable output buffers for HiperSockets and OSA Express devices for improved TCP/IP throughput:
- Best performance can be achieved when data is always delivered successfully without the need of resending. z/VSE uses a default of eight QDIO (Queued Direct I/O) output buffers. This might not always be sufficient. z/VSE V6.1 allows users to configure up to 64 QDIO output buffers for HiperSockets (CHPID type IQD) and OSA-Express (CHPID types OSD and OSX) devices. To ease the configuration skeleton SKOSACFG has been enhanced. Additional QDIO output buffers might require users to increase the size of the TCP/IP partition.
z/VSE V6.1 and CICS TS for z/VSE V2.1 fulfill the statements of direction in Software Announcement 214-074, dated April 7, 2014.

Migration Price Option (MPO):
The Migration Price Option enables the combining of z/VSE V5 (and/or z/VSE prior versions) and z/VSE V6 MSUs to calculate z/VSE V6 billable charges on the same machine. Customers pay for the combined MSUs at the z/VSE V6 price. All Customers are eligible for the MPO while migrating to z/VSE V6. The eligibility period is 18 months from the date of licensing z/VSE V6. Eligibility ends at the completion of migration or 18 months, whichever occurs first.
The Migration Price Option should be requested when ordering z/VSE V6 when that will be replacing z/VSE V5 (and/or z/VSE prior versions) on the same Machine.
The Migration Price Option is available:
- While z/VSE V5 (and/or z/VSE prior versions) and z/VSE V6 are running on the same machine and Licensed under the same IBM customer number.
- During migration to z/VSE V6 and not to exceed 18 months from the date of licensing z/VSE V6.
When z/VSE V5 (and/or z/VSE prior versions) and z/VSE V6 are eligible for Sub-Capacity pricing, z/VSE V6 is charged at the combined concurrent peak MSUs for both versions, reported as z/VSE (ALL) on the customer's Sub-Capacity Report. The calculated MSUs apply for a period not to exceed 18 months from the date of licensing of z/VSE V6.
When full capacity charges apply, charges for z/VSE V5 (and/or z/VSE prior versions) and z/VSE V6 are based on the MSU value at Full-Machine Capacity and billed at the z/VSE V6 price for a period not to exceed 18 months from the date of licensing z/VSE V6.
The usage of a set of Programs, subject to the waiver, would be limited by terms of an IBM agreement such that the qualifying customers will be allowed to run only one SW application (either "from" or "to" Program) in a single production LPAR.
By accepting these special terms, Customer agrees that IBM has the right to verify Customer's usage data relating to Customer's use of IBM programs and Customer's compliance with other terms of this Agreement at all sites and for all environments in which Customer installs or uses IBM programs for any purpose. IBM may use an independent auditor to assist with such verification provided IBM has a written confidentiality agreement in place with such auditor.
Customer agrees to create, retain, and provide to IBM and its auditors written records, system tools outputs, and other system information sufficient to provide auditable verification that Customer's installation and use of IBM programs complies with the Agreement terms, including IBM's applicable licensing and pricing terms. The rights and obligations in this section remain in effect during the period any IBM programs are licensed to Customer and for two years thereafter.
IBM will notify Licensee in writing if any such verification indicates that Licensee has used any Program in excess of its authorized use or is otherwise not in compliance with the terms of this Agreement. Customer agrees to promptly pay directly to IBM the charges that IBM specifies in an invoice for 1) any such excess use, 2) support for such excess use for the lesser of the duration of such excess use or two years, and 3) any additional charges and other liabilities determined as a result of such verification.

Statement of good security practices |
IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective. IBM does not warrant that systems and products are immune from the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
IBM Electronic Services |
Electronic Service Agent and the IBM Electronic Support web portal are dedicated to providing fast, exceptional support to IBM Systems customers. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tool is a no-additional-charge tool that proactively monitors and reports hardware events, such as system errors, performance issues, and inventory. The Electronic Service Agent tool can help you stay focused on your company's strategic business initiatives, save time, and spend less effort managing day-to-day IT maintenance issues. Servers enabled with this tool can be monitored remotely around the clock by IBM Support, all at no additional cost to you.
Now integrated into the base operating system of AIX® V5.3, AIX V6.1, and AIX V7.1, Electronic Service Agent is designed to automatically and electronically report system failures and utilization issues to IBM, which can result in faster problem resolution and increased availability. System configuration and inventory information collected by the Electronic Service Agent tool also can be viewed on the secure Electronic Support web portal, and used to improve problem determination and resolution by you and the IBM support team. To access the tool main menu, simply type smitty esa_main, and select Configure Electronic Service Agent. In addition, ESA now includes a powerful web user interface, giving the administrator easy access to status, tool settings, problem information, and filters. For more information and documentation on how to configure and use Electronic Service Agent, go to
The IBM Electronic Support portal is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. This portal enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems. The My Systems and Premium Search functions make it even easier for Electronic Service Agent tool-enabled customers to track system inventory and find pertinent fixes.
Benefits
Increased uptime: The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to enhance the Warranty or Maintenance Agreement by providing faster hardware error reporting and uploading system information to IBM Support. This can translate to less wasted time monitoring the symptoms, diagnosing the error, and manually calling IBM Support to open a problem record. Its 24x7 monitoring and reporting mean no more dependence on human intervention or off-hours customer personnel when errors are encountered in the middle of the night.
Security: The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to be secure in monitoring, reporting, and storing the data at IBM. The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to securely transmit via either the Internet (HTTPS or VPN) or modem to provide customers a single point of exit from their site. Communication is one way. Activating Electronic Service Agent does not enable IBM to call into a customer's system.
For additional information, please refer to IBM Electronic Service Agent
More accurate reporting: Because system information and error logs are automatically uploaded to the IBM Support Center in conjunction with the service request, you are not required to find and send system information, decreasing the risk of misreported or misdiagnosed errors. Once inside IBM, problem error data is run through a data knowledge management system and knowledge articles are appended to the problem record.
Customized support: Using the IBM ID entered during activation, you can view system and support information in the My Systems and Premium Search sections of the Electronic Support website on
My Systems provides valuable reports of installed hardware and software using information collected from the systems by Electronic Service Agent. Reports are available for any system associated with your IBM ID. Premium Search combines the function of search and the value of Electronic Service Agent information, providing advanced search of the technical support knowledgebase. Using Premium search and the Electronic Service Agent information that has been collected from your system, you are able to see search results that apply specifically to your systems.
