Server hardware requirements
Server processor and memory requirements
The following table lists the minimum server processor and memory requirements for each supported server platform.
Server Minimum Minimum platform processor RAM IBM AIX(R) 1.2 GHz Power 4+ 4 GB processor Linux(TM) 2.0 GHz Pentium(TM) 4 or 4 GB equivalent Microsoft(TM) 2.0GHz Pentium 4 or 4 GB Windows(TM) equivalent Sun Solaris 1.28 GHz UltraSparc 4 GB IIIi or equivalent processor IBM eServer Model 810 2-way (750 4 GB iSeries(TM) MHz) or POWER4(TM) 1.1 GHz or higher
Note: The requirements provided are for the default configuration where no external LDAP directories and databases are being used. Contact your IBM representative to determine the capacity requirements for your organization's deployment.
Using the NTFS file system is recommended for Microsoft Windows systems.
Server disk space requirements
Installing IBM WebSphere® Application Server, IBM WebSphere Portal, IBM HTTP Server, IBM Workplace Collaboration Services, and the IBM Workplace Collaboration Services databases requires a minimum of 17 GB of free disk space. This amount does not include the disk space required to install the database software. Installation of the Workplace Managed Client provisioning server requires an additional 1.5 GB.
If you use a two-server deployment or a multiple-server network deployment, the server that stores the databases for IBM Workplace Collaboration Services requires a minimum of 10 GB of free disk space. The server that stores the software components for IBM Workplace Collaboration Services requires a minimum of 7 GB of free disk space, or if you install the Workplace Managed Client provisioning server, 8.5 GB of free disk space.
Note: To install on IBM AIX, the /usr directory and /tmp directory each require a minimum of 2 GB of free disk space. To install on Linux, the /opt directory and /tmp directory each require a minimum of 2 GB of free disk space.
Estimating disk space requirements for the messaging capabilities of IBM Workplace Collaboration Services
The database stores mail messages, address books, calendar data, and attachments. Before you install the messaging capabilities of IBM Workplace Collaboration Services, determine the total number of messaging user accounts, the allowable mailbox size for each account, and the deleted message stub retention period. The required disk space will then dictate the number of disk drives. By default, the messaging services allot 60 MB of storage to each mail account.
To estimate the gigabytes needed for the mail data, refer to the product information center for IBM Workplace Collaboration Services at
Estimating disk space requirements for the collaborative learning capabilities of IBM Workplace Collaboration Services
The amount of disk space required for the data and indexes that comprise the database for the collaborative learning capabilities depends on the following factors:
- Number of courses
- Number of registered users
- Average courses per user
- Average nodes (course elements) per course
Use the following formulas to estimate the size of the data and indexes in a collaborative learning database.
To estimate the data size (in KB), use this formula: number_of_courses *(57 + average_nodes_per_course * 30.4) + number_of_users *(10 + average_courses_per_user * (3.8 + average_nodes_per_course * 1.1))
To estimate the index size (in KB), use this formula: number_of_courses * (12.3 + average_nodes_per_course * 1.4) + number_of_users * (1.5 + average_courses_per_user *(1.6 + average_nodes_per_course * 0.14))
To calculate the required disk space, add the data size to the index size. If the Learning Management and Learning Delivery servers are installed on one server, multiply the result of this calculation by 2 to determine the required disk space.
Workplace Managed Client hardware requirements
The Workplace Managed Client processor and memory requirements are as follows:
- Intel Pentium 3 processor, 800 MHz
- 512 MB RAM minimum, 1 GB recommended
The recommended memory requirement for the Workplace Managed Client is 1 GB. The additional memory will reduce client start up time and increase performance and reliability.
Disk space recommendations for Workplace Managed Client are described in the following table:
Installation Recommended scenario disk space Productivity tools not installed 350 MB Productivity tools installed 600 MB without language pack Productivity tools installed with 700 MB language pack
Server Side Network connectivity requirements
The network connectivity requirements are as follows:
- Network adapter and connection to a physical network that can carry IP packets. For example, Ethernet, token ring, ATM, and so on.
- Static IP address with an entry in DNS.
- Configured fully qualified host name. The portal system must be able to resolve an IP address from its fully qualified host name.
To ensure that the host name is correctly configured in DNS, type one of these commands at the command line of another server on the network:
- ping hostname.yourco.com
- nslookup hostname.yourco.com (for use on Microsoft Windows)
- dig hostname.yourco.com (for use on Linux)

Charge metrics definitions
Processor
In Full Capacity charging, Proofs of Entitlement (PoEs) must be acquired for all activated "processors" (available for use) that are on the server where the program or a component of the program is run.
- If there are Program Components included in the offering whose function is not to be included in the charge metric, these must be listed in the Program-unique Terms of the License Information.
- IBM defines a physical processor in a computer as a functional unit that interprets and executes instructions. A physical processor consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic and logic units.
- Multicore technology allows two or more processors (commonly called "cores") to be active on a single silicon chip. Unless otherwise announced, with multicore technology, IBM considers each "core" to be a physical processor. For example, in a dual-core chip, there are two physical processors residing on the single silicon chip.
- In the zSeries' Integrated Facility for Linux (IFL) environment, each IFL engine is considered a single "physical processor."
- Threading, a technique which makes a single processor seem to perform as two or more, does not affect the count of physical processors.
- Where "blade" technology is employed, each "blade" is considered a separate server and charging is based upon the total number of processors on the blade on which the program is run.
Per managed processor
Charges are based on the activated processors on the machines in the computing environment affiliated with the program rather than on the server where the program is run. The managed processors which require PoEs are defined both in the Prices section of the announcement or the License Information's Program-unique Terms.
- If there are Program Components included in the offering whose function is not to be included in the charge metric, these must be listed in the Program-unique Terms of the License Information.

Processor Day
Processor Day is a daily charge that allows customer to purchase additional capacity during peak periods. This applies to per CPU products only and requires the customer to already own a per CPU license of product.
Registered User
A Registered User (User) is one and only one individual, machine, program, or device with a specific identity (ID) within or outside your enterprise which is recorded in a registry (also known as table, directory, and so on). A PoE is evidence of your authorization to use a program and is required for each User accessing the program or any program component.
- Access to the program is restricted to users recorded in the registry.
- Users have unique specific identity and IDs cannot be shared.
- When multiple, unique registries exist, the registries will be additive for charging purposes even if a specific ID exists in both registries.
- An ID may establish one or more connections and count as a single User.
Authorized User
An Authorized User (User) is one and only one individual, machine, program, or device with a specific ID within or outside your enterprise.
A PoE is evidence of your authorization to use a program and is required for each User accessing the program or any component, application, feature, function, and/or capability thereof, either directly or indirectly, through any means on behalf of the User in any manner.
The program may be installed on one or more computers, and accessed by multiple Users provided that a User authorization has been obtained for each individual User.
- Users have unique specific identity and IDs cannot be shared.
- An ID may establish one or more connections and count as a single User.
- An ID may only be reassigned for the long-term replacement of personnel, machine, program, or device.

IBM Electronic Services |
IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put
you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution
that provides you with an exclusive, no additional charge enhancement to the service and support
available on the IBM
platform. These services provide the opportunity for greater system availability due to faster
problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services is comprised of two separate
but complementary elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent.
IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The IBM Electronic Service Agent is no additional charge software that resides on your IBM system. It is designed to
proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic,
customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware
error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service
agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware
problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service
that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected
through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they
are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
