Overview

WebSphere® Business Components Composer, a set of Java™ development tools, components, and services, accelerates the building of multichannel financial applications. It provides a comprehensive multichannel solution that enables retail banks to address marketplace pressures and, in the process, reduce their total cost of system ownership and drive increased wallet share.

WebSphere Business Components Composer is particularly relevant to branch transformation initiatives within retail banking, including the construction of banking applications and teller systems.

WebSphere Business Components Composer fully leverages the power of the WebSphere Application Server and associated open standards.

IBM Bank Teller Business Components

This software is specially designed to enhance bank teller applications that are developed using WebSphere Business Components Composer. Bank Teller contains samples of most of the typical branch teller scenarios, including access control, branch administration, customer session, and cash drawer management.

Combined with WebSphere Business Components Composer, Bank Teller serves as a robust solution for retail banks desiring the control and flexibility associated with building a branch teller application. Bank Teller also jump-starts the building of emerging retail channels (such as Internet banking).

Planned Availability Dates

Description

IBM WebSphere Business Components Composer is a set of Java development tools, components, and services that accelerates construction of integrated, multichannel applications. The WebSphere Business Components Composer framework is particularly well suited to building transactional applications for retail banking delivery channels, such as:

  • Branch
  • Internet and intranet
  • Call center
  • Stand-alone kiosk
  • ATM machines
  • Mobile access terminal solutions

Composer also integrates with the IBM Bank Teller Business Component (available separately), a set of components that serve as a foundation for enhanced Web-based bank teller applications.

IBM WebSphere Business Components Composer consists of pre-tested, user-configurable components that can be quickly assembled into a complete financial services application. These components are designed to integrate delivery channels with large-scale online transaction processing (OLTP) such as CICS® or IMS™, thus preserving investment in existing enterprise systems. Additionally, components within the Composer framework:

  • Manage the user interface
  • Provide navigation dialogues
  • Gather operation data
  • Build host messages
  • Process host responses
  • Log transaction information
  • Access financial devices

Composer also includes a Development Workbench that allows non-technical users to define and store new business process flows and associated data structures in a central multiuser repository. This external definition of operations promotes code reuse and reduces the time required to make financial operations available to all delivery channels.

WebSphere Business Components Composer has evolved from the proven IBM Visual Teller Framework (VTF) and CBTF product. Building on this heritage, Composer provides a reliable and high-performance application development environment that focuses on business functions rather than communication protocols, message formatting, and financial device management.

Accessibility by People with Disabilities

For software offerings:

The following features support use by people with disabilities:

  • Operation by keyboard alone
  • Optional font enlargement and high-contrast display settings
  • Screen readers and screen magnifiers tested for use by people with visual impairment
  • Speech recognition products tested for use by people with mobility impairment
  • Optional display of audio alerts for people with hearing impairment

Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act

Accessibility by People with Disabilities

This product does adhere to the standards established by U.S. Section 508.

Product Positioning

The WebSphere Business Components Composer and IBM Bank Teller Business Components are extensions of the WebSphere Application Server. Both Composer and Bank Teller add retail banking content to the WebSphere software platform, enabling retail banks to rapidly develop and deploy retail delivery channel applications. Furthermore, Composer allows application developers to focus on business aspects of the desired solution rather than infrastructure issues.

Compare WebSphere Business Components Composer with MQSeries® Integrator

MQSeries Integrator and WebSphere Business Components Composer have similar flow control characteristics, but they differ in focus, in the services provided, and in the application environment. WebSphere Business Components Composer is primarily focused on composing and delivering business content from a WebSphere variety of client environments. For example, Composer can be used to define and control the operational steps of a financial transaction such as a funds transfer. A funds transfer is composed of a flow of operational steps (debit, credit, host access, receipt print, journaling, and so on), each of which is handled by a business component service. The business components may consist of a new or existing business function accessed through Java and XML technologies within WebSphere. The component composition services of Composer build on security, transactions, and other application services of WebSphere.

MQSeries Integrator is mainly used to process server-to-server messages by providing a powerful message broker hub. For example, MQSeries can be used to manage message traffic between the company's Supply Chain Management (SCM) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems. Integration services provided by the MQSeries Integrator hub consist of flows of operations on messages: processing message field contents to determine routing, performing calculations, checking validity, and translating messages. MQSeries Integrator uses a variety of message format including XML.

MQSeries Integrator and Composer can work together. The two products can interoperate and share message formats through Composer's MQSeries service. For example, a financial institution can use WebSphere Business Components Composer alongside MQSeries Integrator for controlling the flow of front-office financial operations (Composer) and message brokering (MQSeries Integrator) the required access to multiple core base systems and client files.

Compare WebSphere Business Components Composer with WebSphere Portal Server

WebSphere Business Components Composer provides retail banks with the ability to build multiple delivery channel applications across a common infrastructure. Through reuse of business logic and connectivity to common transaction systems, Composer can enable integration of virtually all of a retail bank's channel applications built on the Composer framework. Composer does not possess the capability to integrate non-Composer applications without rewriting existing code.

Conversely, WebSphere Portal Server provides "integration on the glass" for multiple industries. Customers can establish a single, common view of channel applications through the use of portlets. However, Portal Server does not establish consistency in the middle, business-logic tier of channel applications or provide application connectivity to host systems.

WebSphere Business Components Composer and LANDP® Interoperability

LANDP provides device support for IBM financial input/output (I/O) devices for retail banks wanting to build WebSphere Business Components Composer-based applications. Customers can benefit from this facility by running existing LANDP applications alongside new WebSphere Business Components Composer-based applications or plan for staged migration of LANDP applications WebSphere Business Components Composer.

WebSphere Business Components Composer Enterprise Edition V4.2

WebSphere Business Components Composer Enterprise Edition V4.2 has one charge unit — processors. These are available in units of one. The price of WebSphere Business Components Composer Enterprise Edition is based on the number of concurrent processors in all systems and nodes executing any part of the product. This applies to application developers using the product as well as users of applications built using the product.

In the case of a symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) System, a customer must acquire a processor license for each processor in the system. For example, a server configuration with two four-way SMPs, whether stand-alone systems or nodes in a larger system, would require a total of eight processor licenses (eight D5C36LL or D5C37LL licenses).

Note: Processor licensing is not available for S/390® processors except through the special bid process.

WebSphere Business Components Composer Workgroup Edition V4.2

As an alternative to purchasing WebSphere Business Components Composer Enterprise Edition processors licenses for the deployment of end-user applications built using the Enterprise Edition product, the customer can choose to acquire a WebSphere Business Components Composer Workgroup Edition user license (D5C2YLL or D5C2ZLL licenses) for each end-user. To purchase WebSphere Business Components Composer Workgroup Edition user licenses, the customer must hold a minimum of WebSphere Business Components Composer Enterprise Edition license (one D5C36LL or D5C37LL license).

A Workgroup Edition license does not entitle the user to use any development feature of the WebSphere Business Components Composer product. Developers require an Enterprise Edition license.

The price of WebSphere Business Components Composer Workgroup Edition V4.2 is based on the number of concurrent users. Customers of WebSphere Business Components Composer Workgroup Edition should plan on implementing counting methods for users and then obtain additional user entitlements to the extent required. The Workgroup Edition price is independent of how many processors are serving the licensed users. Those processors may include S/390 processors.

IBM Bank Teller Business Components V4.2

The licensing structure and requirements for the IBM Bank Teller Business Components Enterprise Edition and Workgroup Edition products is identical to the WebSphere Business Components Composer Enterprise and Workgroup Edition described above, with one additional requirement: In order to use the IBM Bank Teller Business Components products, the customer must also purchase or hold the same number of licenses of the prerequisite WebSphere Business Components products.

The following examples illustrate the pricing methodology:

  1. A customer implements an Internet solution using WebSphere Business Components Composer Enterprise Edition V4.2. The project and ongoing development requires one developer. Assume the application developed will run on four non-S/390 processors and does not permit counting of users. The customer should purchase five WebSphere Business Components Composer Enterprise Edition V4.2 licenses (five copies of D5C36LL or D5C37LL), one for the developer and four for the deployment.
  2. A bank builds a distributed branch teller system for use by its 5,000 employees. This project requires five developers. The application will run on the employee workstations, branch servers, and centralized WebSphere servers in the same OS/390 environment as the back-end host systems. This customer should purchase five processor licenses of both WebSphere Business Components Composer Enterprise Edition V4.2 and IBM Bank Teller Business Components Enterprise Edition for the developers (five copies of D5C36LL or D5C37LL and five copies of D5C2HLL or D5C2ILL). And, in addition, purchase 5,000 user licenses of the Workgroup Edition of both products for the employees (5,000 copies of D5C2YLL or D5C2ZLL and 5,000 copies of D5C2QLL or D5C2RLL).
  3. A customer buys a ready-to-deploy, end-user application for use by 200 call center agents from an independent software vendor ready to deploy. The application has been built using WebSphere Business Components Composer Enterprise Edition V4.2 and runs on both client and server processors. This customer should purchase one processor license of WebSphere Business Components Composer Enterprise Edition (one D5C36LL or D55C37LL license) to satisfy the requirement for minimum one WebSphere Business Components Composer Enterprise Edition license and 200 user licenses of WebSphere Business Components Composer Workgroup Edition (200 copies of D5C2YLL or D5C2ZLL).
  4. A customer builds a Web services front-end for a legacy back-end host system using WebSphere Business Components Composer Enterprise Edition. The project initially requires three developers, when deployed, one developer will be responsible for maintenance and extension of the Web services. The Web service is planned to run on four non-S/390 processors. The customer should purchase five WebSphere Business Components Composer Enterprise Edition processor licenses (five D5C36LL or D5C37LL licenses), one for the maintenance developer, and four for the deployment. The two other developers use two deployment licenses during the development phase of the project. If the customer wants to deploy these Web services on S/390, then a special bid licensing request should be submitted.
