Overview

With other fax solutions, you usually have to buy an additional server to run fax — more cost, more headaches. With Domino™ Fax, you can run your fax server on the same iSeries or AS/400® server that handles your mail.

Lotus Notes® users can send and receive faxes directly from their Lotus Notes client. Use your current telephone system and Domino infrastructure. Just specify the intended recipient in the "Fax To" field. Inbound faxes arrive in the recipient's inbox promptly and privately.

More than just simple text

  • Fax Lotus Notes memos containing rich text and graphics
  • Format and fax files attached to your Lotus Notes memo
  • Send faxes directly from within a Microsoft™ Windows™ application, such as word processing or spreadsheet software, with the print-to-fax driver (available for download at no charge)

The Domino Fax solution for the iSeries offers native integration with the iSeries or AS/400 fax hardware and with Domino.

IBM Integrated Domino Fax for iSeries V4.4 is provided by IBM and is based on Lotus® Fax for Domino (FxD) for AS/400. It includes several enhancements to the 4.1 Lotus version and is offered at a one-time upgrade price for current holders of Lotus Passport™ licenses for FxD for AS/400 Release 4.1.

Key Prerequisites

Fax for iSeries needs a Windows NT™ workstation or server for formatting faxes.

You can use either a stand-alone Windows NT workstation to perform format conversions or choose a single box solution by utilizing the iSeries Integrated xSeries Server formerly known as the AS/400 Integrated Netfinity® Server (INS).

Description

Benefits for End Users

  • Full integration with Lotus Notes — Faxes are composed using the standard Lotus Notes memo form. Faxes can be addressed using just the recipients' names. Cover pages can be edited and modified using the fax options within the Lotus Notes Mail® template. Fax-to numbers can be stored in your Personal Address Book or the Domino Directory, or you can specify the fax number when you address the memo.
  • Document appearance preserved — Fully preserves appearance of documents during conversion to image format for faxing; full fidelity of fonts and graphics; automatically faxes content of mail memo attachments.
  • Schedule of transmission — Users can automatically delay fax transmission until telephone rates drop.
  • Easy cover page and cost code selection — Users save time by selecting a cover page or a cost code from drop down menus. (New in this release.)
  • Improved queue management — Users and administrators can manage faxes in the outbound queue. (New in this release.)
  • Full mobile support — Lotus Notes users can send and receive faxes right from their laptop when on the road, with full Domino security.
  • Print-to-Fax Driver — Lotus Notes users can send faxes from within a Windows-based application.
  • Fax receipt customization — Users can select how they view received faxes. (New in this release.)
  • Flexible inbound routing — Fully supports modern telephone network features for automatically routing inbound faxes to the recipient's mailbox via:
    • Direct Inward Dialing (DID)
    • Dual Tone Multi-Frequency (DTMF)
    • ISDN/EuroISDN
    • CSID and fax port addressing
    • Manual routing
  • More than Lotus Notes clients — Supports Web browsers, POP3 clients, and OfficeVision users.
  • International support — Multinational character for EuroISDN is available in many local languages.

Benefits for Administrators

  • Uses existing mail server — You do not need to add another server dedicated to fax, as with many other products. A small portion of Domino Fax for iSeries must be installed on a Windows NT workstation (or server) to meet the unique technical demands for converting memos, rich text, graphics, and attached files to image format.
  • Domino-based administration — Domino Fax uses familiar Domino administration tools to configure and manage Domino Fax, locally and remotely. You can maintain user profile information in the Domino directory or in a separate database.
  • Least cost routing — Administrators can leverage their network of fax servers to lower expenses. Outbound faxes can be distributed between servers based on the phone number being dialed, providing the most economical route and significantly reducing the cost of fax phone calls. (New in this release.)
  • Dynamic load balancing — Servers can be clustered together for maximum efficiency. Outbound faxes are automatically routed through the most efficient path.
  • Fax prioritization — Outbound faxes are prioritized automatically based on senders' default priority levels, administrator-defined rules, and the time a fax has waited in the queue.
  • Convenient group settings — System administrators can assign outbound fax priorities, default or custom cover sheets, and other configurable settings to groups of Domino users automatically.

The service end date for this Year-2000-ready product is December 31, 2002.

Product Positioning

Many customers use Facsimile Support for AS/400 (5798-TBY) to fax both AS/400 spooled files and PC documents from their AS/400 system.

Consider:

  • Both Facsimile Support for AS/400 and Domino Fax for iSeries support the 2761 PCI Analog device, the IBM 7852 Model 400 Modem, and the 2750/2751 PCI ISDN IOAs to send and receive faxes. Facsimile Support for AS/400 can also be used with the older SPD-based Fax Adapter (no longer marketed) and the external PC-based solution using GammaFax cards.
  • If you have implemented Lotus Domino for AS/400 and are now looking for a fax solution, Domino Fax for iSeries is a good choice. Domino Fax allows you to fax directly from your Lotus Notes desktop using ad-hoc fax numbers and numbers stored in your Personal Address Book or the Domino Directory. The administrative interface is Lotus Notes-based and, therefore, graphical. It is also possible to fax AS/400 spooled files and OfficeVision documents using Domino Fax.
  • If you have already installed Facsimile Support for AS/400 and are now implementing a Domino solution, consider installing Domino Fax to complement and enhance your faxing capabilities. If you have already integrated Facsimile Support for AS/400 with your line-of-business applications, you will probably want to keep that product. Facsimile Support for AS/400 and Domino Fax can coexist on the same iSeries or AS/400 system but they cannot share fax ports. Some fax ports must be configured for Facsimile Support for AS/400 and others configured for Domino Fax.
  • If you do not plan to use Domino for AS/400, Facsimile Support for AS/400 is the better choice.
