Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability

Today, IBM announces the IBM 9370 family of systems.  This new
modular product line incorporates the latest technologies in an
innovative package, designed expressly for an office environment.
The family features integrated software offerings, integrated
controllers, enhanced communications, and new terms and conditions.
The IBM 9370 has been carefully designed to satisfy the computing
requirements of IBM customers who value System/370 affinity --- in
stand-alone or remotely attached departments.
       The IBM 9370 Information System will allow customers to
leverage existing System/370 programming skills, exploit the openness
and product range of System/370 architecture, preserve their long
term application investment, and take advantage of the high
performance computational capabilities of the IBM 9370 processors.
       The IBM 9370 provides a broad range of performance
capabilities in both commercial and compute-intensive environments.
The IBM 9370 has a performance range greater than 5 times from the
lowest to the highest model of the family.  The System/370 from the
IBM 9370 through the 4381 to the 3090 provides the broadest
compatible performance range in the industry.
       A wide selection of existing System/370 teleprocessing,
networking, and communications systems management capabilities is
further augmented by new IBM 9370 integrated controllers and support
for local area networks.
       To complement the IBM 9370 hardware, new integrated versions
of VM and VSE are announced.  These new versions offer IBM customers
the benefit of System/370 software compatibility and function, but
reduce the level of skill and resources previously required to
support System/370 software.
       Announced with the IBM 9370 are graduated charges for selected
software, and the ability to qualify for processor discounts based on
aggregating System/36, System/38, IBM 9370 processors, and 4300
processor quantities required.  These new terms and conditions will
further increase the attractiveness of the entry systems and reduce
the total systems price for the entire family.
       The IBM 9370 Information System has been designed with both
total systems cost and performance in mind.  In addition to the
attractive entry level hardware models, the IBM 9370 features lower
entry software prices, substantial reductions in support and training
requirements, and modest power consumption and maintenance costs.
Further, the modularity and upgradeability designed into the system
will allow customers to expand the system to keep pace with their
computing requirements.

Customer Letter Section

The IBM 9370 Information System is an expandable new family of IBM
super-mini computers designed to meet a broad range of processing
requirements.  The IBM 9370 is a family of systems small enough and
quiet enough to operate in an office environment.  The IBM 9370
features compact, economical, technically advanced processors and
system storage units mounted in industry standard racks.
       The IBM 9370 Information System has a system footprint of 0.7
square meters (7.8 square feet).  Depending on the model, the  IBM
9370 Information System stands only 1.0 or 1.6 meters in height.  The
new rack packaging provides modular design, tailored to end user
environmental requirements.  The rack also provides for a common
power source for the processor, I/O controllers, and storage
       The IBM 9370 Information System utilizes the most advanced
technology, extending the power of System/370 to the office
environment.  The IBM 9370 uses the latest chip technology, including
the ability to use 1-million bit memory and new dense,
cost/performance logic chips.  The IBM 9370's unique design
incorporates multiple, distinct I/O controllers, which transmit data
between the extensive array of devices and processor storage via the
system's internal data path.  The I/O controllers, integrated into
the IBM 9370's logical and physical design, are important
contributors to the system's economical size and cost.  The IBM 9370
also supports new state-of-the-art direct access storage devices and
a new rack mounted magnetic tape drive.
       To provide customers with configuration flexibility, the IBM
9370 processors incorporate a new I/O structure, allowing for a wide
array of products via the integrated controllers.  These controllers
permit rack mounted attachment of storage and tape devices, a 3270
workstation subsystem, and a communications subsystem.  Flexible,
open connectivity options are available via the integrated
communications subsystem, supporting synchronous and asynchronous
communications lines, ASCII terminals, and attachment to local area
networks.  The Multibus (TM) interface is supported via an integrated
SOEMI (Serial Original Equipment Manufacturer's Interface) capability
on the workstation controller.
       All the memory and integrated I/O subsystem controllers in the
IBM 9370 processors utilize new system packaging technology, which
makes adding memory or controllers a simple task.  The integrated I/O
controllers are packaged as cards contained in slots within the
       Mounted in the IBM 9309 Rack Enclosure is the IBM 9370
processor itself, the IBM 9332 and 9335 Direct Access Storage Devices
and the new IBM 9347 Magnetic Tape Drive.  As the customer's
computing requirements grow, the IBM 9370 system can be easily
expanded by adding additional features and racks to accommodate
greater storage and tape capacity.
       The IBM 9370 Information System consists of four new
processors, the Model 20, the Model 40, the Model 60, and the Model
90.  The Model 20 is a low priced, entry level processor with 4, 8,
or 16 megabytes of memory and seven I/O card slots.  The Model 40 and
Model 60 processors are the mid-size offerings with memory up to 16
MB and 17 I/O card slots.  The Model 90 is the highest performance
processor in the IBM 9370 family with memory of 8 or 16 MB and a
separate I/O card enclosure providing up to 54 I/O card slots.  The
IBM 9370 systems provide a wide range of processor performance with
greater than a five-fold range in processing power, while introducing
new levels of entry System/370 price performance.  A floating point
accelerator, standard for all models, provides an even greater level
of performance for compute-intensive environments.  Each IBM 9370
system includes a processor console to install, operate and maintain
the system.
       The IBM System/MIL-370 processor version of the IBM 9370
series is available in the United States on special order through
IBM's Federal System Division.  The System/MIL-370 is a special
version of the IBM 9370 processors, designed to meet stringent
military environmental, shock and vibration specifications.
       The DASD/Tape Subsystem Controller supports the attachment of
integrated disk and tape units with each controller supporting a
maximum of eight device addresses and operating at a data transfer
rate of 3 MB.  Two controllers can be integrated into the Model 20,
four controllers in the Models 40 and 60, and up to 12 controllers in
the Model 90.
       The IBM 9332 and 9335 disk storage units provide rack mounted
high performance storage  capability.  The 9332 is a medium capacity,
high performance Fixed Disk Storage Device with dual actuators, fixed
block architecture, and 368 MB of storage.  The IBM 9335 is a large
capacity, high performance device with similar characteristics to the
9332 and with 824 MB of storage.  The new IBM 9347 Magnetic Tape Unit
is also rack mounted with its own integrated controller and uses
standard  1/2-inch tape to provide backup and recovery of data in
streaming mode at 1600 bits per inch.
       The Workstation Subsystem Controller (with four IBM 3299
Terminal Multiplexors) supports the attachment of up to 32  3270
Information Display System displays and printers.  The subsystems
also provide attachment capability for OEM devices.  Two controllers
are available on the entry IBM 9370 and up to 12 controllers can be
integrated into the largest model processor.
       The IBM 9370 Information System can accommodate a wide variety
of displays and printers.  Personal computers, 3270 workstations, and
low cost ASCII terminals can be directly attached.  Color displays,
such as the IBM 3179-G, offer low cost, all points addressable color
graphics.  Small table top printers, such as the IBM 4224, offer near
letter quality color printing with speeds up to 400 characters per
second.  These are just a few of the many devices that can be
attached to the IBM 9370 Information System.
       The wide range of existing System/370 teleprocessing,
networking and communications systems management capabilities are
further augmented by new IBM 9370 integrated subsystem controllers,
support for local area networks, and the ROLM (R) CBX.
       The Telecommunications Subsystem Controller supports the
binary synchronous, asynchronous, and SNA protocols supporting
various communication line combinations.  The communications
controller supports an IBM Token Ring Adapter that provides system
connection to local area networks conforming to IEEE 802.5.  An IEEE
802.3 local area network adapter is also available providing a link
to an Ethernet (R) local area network.  Depending on the size of the
IBM 9370 processor, two to twelve communications controllers can be
       An optional integrated System/370 Block Multiplexor Channel is
available for System/370 channel attached devices.  The System/370
Block Multiplexor Channel attaches one to eight control units,
supports System/370 I/O, and is available on all IBM 9370 models with
up to 12 channels on the largest processor.

Integrated, ready to run System/370 software offerings are provided
by new releases of the VM/Integrated System and VSE/SP.  Both are
designed to be easily installed by system administrators in only a
few hours, and can be remotely managed and maintained from a larger
system in the enterprise.
       VM/SP is the interactive operating system most suited to
address the processing needs of departmental and work group
environments.  In addition to offering all of the function of VM/SP,
the VM/Integrated System (VM/IS) is designed to satisfy end user
requirements.  VM/IS is the preferred delivery vehicle for
departmental and end user work group environments.  VM/IS also
provides optional functions for:  office professional,
engineering/scientific program development, problem solving
languages, relational database, networking and communication

controller support.
       VM/IS consists of many components integrated into a single
offering.  The design allows VM/IS to be installed by an individual
with minimal data processing skills --- in substantially less time
than previously required to install a non-integrated VM system by a
skilled system programmer.  The help text and menu structure provided
with these offerings make the system easier to use.  Further, a new
set of task-oriented manuals are available to aid all users of the
       VM/Remote System Programming Support Offering (VM/RSP) is an
optional offering that allows VM/IS users to dial a single telephone
number to electronically receive both maintenance and usage
assistance from the VM/RSP Support Center.  When utilizing this
facility, system programming skills are not needed at the end user's
       Announced today for VM/SP and VM/IS are new end user
facilities and new options for horizontal growth.  Horizontal growth
possibilities are expanded with the announcement today of ACF/VTAM
for VM/SP support for inter-processor and cluster controller device
support of the IBM Token-Ring Adapter of the IBM 9370 Information
       Also announced today is the new Transparent Services Access
Facility in VM/SP which will support on the IBM 9370 Information
System both the IBM Token Ring Adapter and the IEEE 802.3 Adapter
providing a link to Ethernet local area networks.
       To support intelligent workstations, both host and IBM
Personal Computer facilities are available to transfer files,
communicate with other personal computer users, and use a personal
computer as a terminal or a standalone system.
       In departments and end user work groups where intensive batch
and transaction processing environments exist, VSE/SP is the most
suitable operating system.  This extends the traditional strength of
VSE/SP in data centers where the foundation for growth to MVS exists.
       VSE/SP is available in a pre-generated load-and-go format.  It
is easy to install, use and maintain, and provides a single system
appearance to the user.  VSE/SP allows consistent integration of
applications, and supports online help and national languages.
       In addition, VSE/SP allows distributed data centers to execute
similar applications as at the host and/or dedicated applications
specific to the location.  In support of this environment VSE/SP
offers remote job entry and intermediate distributed node support in
the SNA environment, and centrally controlled or unattended
operations support.  Additionally, as a departmental system, VSE/SP
complements the extensive commercial application offerings available
with business professional, information decision, and office support.
VSE/SP also provides integrated support for intelligent workstations.
       A wide range of teleprocessing, networking, and communications
systems management capabilities of Systems Network Architecture will
be available on the IBM 9370 processors.  With today's announcement
of ACF/VTAM Version 3.0 for VSE/SP, releases of Version 3, as well as
selected Communications Network Management products, are now
available across the MVS, VM/SP, and VSE/SP environments.  The new
integrated NetView network management product announced in May 1986
will be available in the MVS and VM environments.  SNA networks can
be implemented across System/370, System/36, System/38, and
intelligent workstations to meet the diverse needs of IBM customers.
       The IBM 9370 Asynchronous Communications Adapter supports
connection to a ROLM CBX through a ROLM DataCom Module (DCM) or
through a ROLM Data Terminal Interface (DTI).  Attachment of ROLM
terminals, Cypress, Cedar and Juniper, is via the ROLM CBX.
       In addition to VM/IS and VSE/SP, the IBM 9370 family supports
MVS/SP and IX/370.
       MVS/SP is supported on the larger IBM 9370 Model 60 and Model
90 systems.  The support enables customers to develop applications
under MVS/SP on the host and transport, without changes, to
distributed work group locations.
       IBM Interactive Executive for System/370 (IX/370) is an IBM
enhanced UNIX (TM) implementation for the System/370 environment
based on AT&T System V.  IX/370 is an interactive, multi-user,
multiprocessing system providing most of the functions of UNIX System
V as defined by AT&T plus many IBM enhancements.  The full set of
UNIX programmer productivity tools is included.  IX/370 provides an
alternative application development and operational environment for
customers with a requirement for UNIX.  IX/370 is supported only
under control of VM/SP.

       Announced with the IBM 9370 Information System are new terms
and conditions, including new, graduated one-time charges for
selected VM, VSE, and cross system licensed programs.  These new
one-time charges are based on the processor group of the designated
machine on which they are licensed.  Processors are classified into
groups based on their individual processor performance.  The lower
the processor group, the lower the one-time charge.  Enhanced volume
discounts are now available for the one-time charge features of the
selected programs starting at a quantity of three.  The discounts
range up to 35%.  The MLC/ILC option is still available.
       Today, IBM is also announcing new terms and conditions for
volume procurement of selected intermediate processors which allows
customers to qualify for discounts on the IBM System/36, System/38,
and IBM 9370 processors based on their aggregate quantity requirement
for these processors and 4300s.  The agreement will allow IBM
customers the flexibility of acquiring the best solutions to meet the
diverse data processing requirements of their enterprises.
Today's IBM 9370 announcement reflects further commitment to
strengthen IBM's mid-range systems -- System/36, 38 and System/370.
The IBM 9370 complements IBM's earlier 1986 announcements for the
System/370 and for the System/36 and System/38.
       In February IBM announced four new models of the IBM 4381,
expanding our System/370 data center offerings and providing
significant new levels of price performance.  The recently enhanced
4381 family with its multiple channel, high data rates, and large
memory capabilities provides an attractive entry solution for
System/370 data center environments -- as well as a low-cost entry
into System/370 extended addressing architecture.  The 4381 offers an
excellent growth path for current IBM 4341 and 4361 users, as well as
future IBM 9370 users.
       Beginning in January, IBM has made many enhancements to the
System/36 and System/38.  IBM's June announcements added new models
to the System/38, and significant enhancements and growth options for
the System/36.  Additional System/36 and System/38 product
improvements are being announced today along with the IBM 9370
Information System.
       With today's announcements, IBM now offers a System/370 family
outside of the data center, complementing the System/36 and System/38
in the mid-range.  The System/36 and System/38 continue to offer
ideal solutions where System/370 affinity is not desired and a lower
entry price is required.  These two product families provide our
customers with a variety of capabilities and flexibility in meeting
their processing needs -- not available in a single architectural
