The solution for data warehousing with DB2 with BLU Acceleration enables organizations that want to accomplish more with less by creating warehouse solutions to explore big data, analytics, mobile, cloud, and social media. Data management investments must be fast, reliable, affordable, future-proof and versatile - even multipurpose. The solution encompasses IBM DB2 with BLU Acceleration running on IBM Power servers with POWER7+ processors.

The solution offers:

The solution, which includes the IBM Power ESE servers are designed to work with large, complex data environments and incorporate industry-leading features to support the specific functional, quality of service, and operational cost considerations associated with data analytics. Organizations that depend on analytics for mission-critical decision making can benefit from the Power server platform, which is resilient to planned and unplanned outages. Power servers incorporate massively parallel POWER7+ processors and dynamically scale within, allocating system resources to meet workload demands.

The IBM Power ESE server is the hardware element of the solution, with DB2 with BLU Acceleration software components included as well. The software is installed by the IBM Customer Solution Center. The hardware and software solution will be shipped from IBM manufacturing with 90-day software license keys. Confirmation of available software licenses is required to ship the system.

Business leaders depend on data about business operations and the marketplace to differentiate their businesses from competitors. Identifying hidden relationships, patterns and trends in the era of big data can be a daunting task given the unprecedented volume and variety of data, in the face of higher demands for analytics. Organizations need faster insight and agility to create new business opportunities, increase operational efficiency, and drive customer satisfaction.

Whether your business strategy is to increase growth, drive operational results, reduce costs, attract or retain customers, improve IT applications and infrastructure, or create new products, DB2 with BLU Acceleration offers features and flexibility uniquely designed to help IT and business executives accomplish more with less.

Analytics at the speed of thought

DB2 with BLU Acceleration feature is in-memory, hybrid, column-organized table technology that yields faster analytics from data warehousing without the costs or limits of in-memory only systems. It speeds analytics and reporting with a combination of in-memory and column store data retrieval, maximized CPU processing, and data skipping that enables faster input/output.

Not only does DB2 with BLU Acceleration feature deliver faster insights, it may also help drive consistently better warehouse performance, enabling you to meet service level agreements and significantly reduce storage costs. You can run a multiple terabyte data warehouse on a single server, helping you lower hardware, setup, and administration costs.

The BLU Acceleration feature is designed to be transparent, which means it can be deployed with a wide variety of data warehouse applications. In addition, enhancements to the Optim™ - Query Workload Tuner tool help you to analyze your workload and decide which tables would yield the greatest benefits when converted to BLU Acceleration column-oriented tables. A reporting tool is also included that helps you track the percentage of your user data that resides in BLU Acceleration column-oriented tables.

Optimized for Power Systems™

DB2 with BLU Acceleration enables faster and less complex analytic queries and reporting using dynamic in-memory columnar technologies with parallel vector processing and actionable compression, which better processes data while it is still compressed. The system is optimized to run on Power servers, streamlining administration and maintenance, reducing the load on resources. DB2 simultaneous multithreading is exploited in POWER7+ processors, which autonomically detects and exploits larger pages and storage keys. BLU Acceleration is also designed to take advantage of multiple cores, delivering maximum core usage. Using available hardware such as memory, I/O, and CPU helps to reduce memory latency and processing.

The solution preloads and configures DB2 with BLU Acceleration. BLU Acceleration is fully integrated with DB2 on Power servers. DB2 with BLU Acceleration also integrates with AIX , providing policy-based workload management within DB2 and AIX instead of one or the other.

Benefits for organizations using SAP Applications

The solution can be used to enhance business operations that rely on SAP ERP and business planning solutions. Using BLU Acceleration capabilities can dramatically speed up ERP processing and reporting. This can be deployed without affecting the ERP environment. Organizations planning to deploy new or expand SAP business planning environments should consider leveraging the speed-of-thought analytics possible with the solution compared with traditional row-based data stores.

For businesses that want to more effectively achieve profitability and competitive differentiation for analytic data workloads, the solution delivers a high performance, highly resilient database and data warehouse infrastructure for faster insights from analytics.
