Overview |
IBM® delivers key technology to deploy smarter messaging with the new WebSphere® MQ Telemetry features. These WebSphere MQ Telemetry features extend the universal messaging backbone provided by WebSphere MQ to a wide range of remote sensors, actuators and telemetry devices. It extends WebSphere MQ so that it can now interconnect intelligent enterprise applications, services, and decision makers with networks of instrumented devices.
The WebSphere MQ Telemetry features provide the foundation for an enterprise nervous system that enables the organization to sense-and-respond to events in the world around it, supporting faster, better decision making that enables a smarter working environment.
By using the WebSphere MQ Telemetry features, businesses can embrace, take advantage of, and change by creating a more agile, collaborative and connected business environment. A smarter working environment can make businesses more profitable and productive and make the world a better place to live and work.
WebSphere MQ is extended with new features for connecting enterprises to smart sensors and telemetry devices. These new features provide optional messaging capabilities that are separately orderable, and require additional licenses for connecting telemetry devices to WebSphere MQ networks.
- Delivers a messaging transport designed for resource-constrained telemetry devices like smart sensors and actuators
- Provides a gateway that can enable WebSphere MQ messaging networks to connect enterprise applications and services with remote sensors and devices
- Offers a client software development kit that delivers a range of device-side messaging capabilities in different programming languages - from basic telemetry connectivity to advanced capabilities for concentrators and smart devices
- Delivers remote graphical administration via Eclipse-based WebSphere MQ Explorer tooling
- Encourages device manufacturers to enable their sensors to be ready to connect into IBM connectivity solutions
- Includes the capability that delivers interconnectivity that can underpin smarter working solutions, enabling enterprises to sense-and-respond to remote events with an enterprise nervous system that reaches out far beyond corporate headquarters
The WebSphere MQ Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol provided by these new features is an established open messaging protocol that was previously provided by WebSphere Message Broker products. These new optional features reduce the prerequisites required for connecting enterprise systems to sensor devices. WebSphere Message Broker customers can continue to take advantage of the MQTT protocol by leveraging this new feature of WebSphere MQ.
For details about WebSphere MQ V7.0, refer to Software Announcement ZP09-0282, dated August 25, 2009.

Client Device
The WebSphere MQ Telemetry features provide optional messaging capabilities that are separately orderable and require additional licenses in order to connect telemetry devices into WebSphere MQ networks.
Client Device is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed.
A Client Device is a single user computing device or special purpose sensor or telemetry device that requests the execution of or receives for execution a set of commands, procedures, or applications from or provides data to another computer system that is typically referred to as a server or is otherwise managed by the server. Multiple Client Devices may share access to a common server. A Client Device may have some processing capability or be programmable to allow a user to do work.
Examples include, but are not limited to actuators, appliances, automated teller machines, automatic meter readers, cash registers, disk drives, desktop computers, kiosks, notebook computers, personal digital assistant, point-of-sale terminals, sensors, smart meters, tape drives, and technical workstations.
Types of Telemetry Feature Client Device
The program offers the following types of Client Device. Each type of Client Device has corresponding licenses that entitle up to 100 of these devices to connect into WebSphere MQ networks.
- MQ Telemetry client - These clients are found in the MQ Install Directory\MQXR\SDK\clients directory structure. This client provides basic Telemetry connectivity. See the programdocumentation for more details.
- MQ Telemetry Advanced client - These clients are found in the MQ Install Directory\MQXR\SDK\advanced directory structure. This client provides more advanced Telemetry connectivity capabilities. See the programdocumentation for more details.
Processor (Value Unit)
A processor core is a functional unit within a computing device that interprets and executes instructions. A processor core consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic or logic unit. With multicore technology, each core is considered a processor. Not all processor cores require the same number of Processor Value Unit entitlements. To calculate the number of Processor Value Unit entitlements required, refer to the Processor Value Unit table on the following Web site
With full capacity licensing, a PoE must be acquired for the appropriate number of Processor Value Units based on all activated processor cores available for use on the server.

IBM Electronic Services |
IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.
The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
