IBM Mashup Center 1.0: Empower your business
See final section for details of availability and limitations, if applicable.
IBM Mashup Center enables non-technical users to drag and drop components from personal, enterprise, and Web sources to easily create, deploy, and share customized Web applications (or mashups) in minutes. IBM Mashup Center helps your organization increase productivity and agility by empowering employees to be innovators and problem solvers on their own, without engaging IT support.
Business users work with IBM Mashup Center's browser-based tool to quickly assemble mashups that help to uncover new business insights. The software includes a set of out-of-the-box, business-ready widgets that jump-start mashup creation and support a wide range of information viewing options, including charts and table views.
You can easily extend the mashup environment in several ways:
- Incorporate widgets from across the Web, including any of the thousands of Google Gadgets
- Enable new widgets, from simple HTML pages to rich Java-based applications
- Take advantage of IBM Lotus Widget Factory, a wizard-based development environment for rapidly building dynamic widgets
After mashups or widgets are created, they can easily be published to a centralized catalog, where other users can discover them. The catalog includes built-in Web 2.0 community features like ratings, tagging, and commenting. These community-enhancing features help to illuminate the most useful assets, while also increasing productivity by encouraging reuse. In addition, with the catalog, you can apply the appropriate levels of governance by securing which users or groups can see specific assets.
IBM Mashup Center also enables you to unlock a wide range of information sources within the enterprise, such as databases, desktop and departmental information, and internal and external Web sources. It includes connectors to the most common back-end sources, from enterprise systems such as SAP to desktop data such as Microsoft Excel. Through a wizard-based interface, technically-savvy users can simply point and click to turn their information sources into robust, consumable feeds that can then be remixed into new mashup applications. With IBM Mashup Center, you can make better use of existing core systems without the need to copy or replicate data sources and without requiring changes to the underlying systems.
After a feed is generated, it can be transformed and combined with other internal and external feeds. Using a visual, browser-based tool, information and business analysts can merge, transform, filter, annotate, or publish information in new formats, helping create a single view of disparate sets of information in minutes.
IBM Mashup Center plugs into your existing security model, including LDAPs and user directories, providing security over widgets, mashups, and information feeds.
Refer to the Hardware requirements and Software requirements sections for details.

Intuitive wiring of widgets and feeds
With IBM Mashup Center, end users can quickly and easily assemble new situational applications by dragging and dropping widgets onto the page, and then assembling them together on screen. IBM Mashup Center includes an intuitive interface that walks nontechnical users through the process of connecting (or wiring) different widgets together. Users can drop widgets on top of each other and, if they can send and receive matching data types, they automatically connect. After the widgets are connected, users can launch the wiring graph to visualize how the various widgets interact.
Out-of-the-box, business-ready widgets
IBM Mashup Center includes a set of prebuilt widgets that jump-start development efforts. These widgets include:
- Charting: Chart tabular information feeds into line, bar, or pie charts. Feeds can be directly mashed onto a chart or sourced from other widgets on the page.
- Feed Reader: View a wide range of RSS or Atom feeds coming from the Web. Easily configure the look, feel, and refresh rate of the feed.
- Image Displayer: Decorate your mashups with images coming from a local source or any URL-addressable location.
- Rich Text Editor: Add rich text your mashup without having to know HTML. Power users can switch to the markup mode to easily type or paste in HTML.
- Web Site Displayer: Display URL-addressable content, such as an entire Web page, within your mashup.
- Table Viewer: Displays information from XML or Atom feeds in a tabular format. Supports events as well as filtering and highlighting of rows based on criteria that you specify.
In addition, users can easily extend their mashup environment by incorporating widgets from across the Web, including any of the thousands of Google Gadgets. IT can also contribute new widgets for mashing, which can be as simple as an HTML page or as powerful as a rich Java-based application. The IBM Mashup Center also gives you access to an external catalog, where end users can quickly add widgets into their IBM Mashup Center environment.
Widget-based data transformations
IBM Mashup Center also includes a set of "power user" widgets that can be used to easily transform or adapt content passed between widgets on a page:
- Regular expression adapter: Use regular expressions to manipulate event content. For instance, you can use this widget to strip out the ZIP code (or other mailing code) from a customer address object.
- Feed transformation widget: Convert the structure of a feed using an easy-to-use widget-based interface. Change column headers, filter data, and preview changes.
Because the IBM Mashup Center is fully extensible, you can add your own transformation widgets that adapt data from one format to another.
Sharing and discovery of mashups and widgets
After a mashup is assembled, it can be easily shared. Visual tools enable end users to define what users or groups can view or edit their pages. With this feature, business users can work together to build mashup applications.
In addition to sharing of mashup pages, end users can publish those pages to the catalog with just a few mouse clicks. After they are published to the catalog, other users can discover and then download the pages within their own IBM Mashup Center Workshop environment, helping to encourage similar mashup applications.
Platform- and language-independent distributed architecture
The IBM Mashup Center is based on a distributed architecture. Widgets can be assembled not only from the local environment, but also from any remote widget server, as long as it can find and load the appropriate widget definition. With this powerful architecture, widgets can be independently scaled and sent back and forth across widget servers. In addition, the assembly environment for widgets is platform- and server-independent. Widgets can be written in a number of different languages (.NET, PHP, Java, HTML) and available on a wide variety of platforms, giving you significant flexibility and freedom.
Rich page customization and management capabilities
With the IBM Mashup Center, you have complete control over the look and feel of your mashup pages. End users can use visual tools to easily change the page layout and format, including themes and skins, background image and color, borders, and margins without having to touch the HTML. More technical users, such as Web developers, can use a page's edit source mode to directly modify the page's underlying code. In addition, with file-based persistence, Web developers can employ their favorite content editing tools to design the exact look and feel they want.
Live Text gives end users quick, in-context access to information, reducing extra clicks and navigation. For example, each time a person's name appears in a widget, Live Text can automatically add a link to the name that, when hovered over, opens a pop-up window that contains the selected person's business card. Live Text can be added into a widget without significant programming; HTML developers simply need to add the appropriate tag or microformat into the markup. IBM Mashup Center includes a few Live Text tags out of the box, including vcard and address. Because Live Text is a completely extensible framework, Web developers can easily add their own tags and associated behaviors.
Out-of-the-box connectivity and core information assets
IBM Mashup Center enables out-of-the-box connectivity to a wide range of enterprise, Web, personal, and departmental information sources. This reduces time to value, allows for information to be quickly and easily unlocked and put to broader use, and enriches situational applications such as mashups with relevant and timely information regardless of the source.
Desktop and departmental assets
Up to 80% of enterprise information comes from personal and departmental information sources such as Microsoft Excel and Access or MySQL databases. With IBM Mashup Center you can access the information in those resources and mix it with both enterprise and Web-based sources. IBM Mashup Center unlocks critical information for wider use and consumption without forcing changes in how business users choose to manage their local or departmental systems.
IBM Mashup Center breaks down information silos by converting information into consistent and easily managed feeds independent from the underlying source. A wide range of information sources, all of which may be using different access models, can be unlocked, transformed, and mixed, and then used by multiple applications and devices. Enterprise data is secured via existing proven security models; the underlying information sources do not need to be changed nor does data need to be duplicated. IBM Mashup Center supports the following:
- IBM DB2
- IBM Lotus Domino
- IBM Information Server
- LDAP Oracle
- Web Services
- SQL Server
- Tivoli Directory Integrator
Before IBM Mashup Center, there was no way of adding and mixing Web information feeds with enterprise, personal, and departmental information sources. IBM Mashup Center captures important and useful intranet and Internet assets that you can quickly incorporate with your existing desktop and enterprise assets through feed mashups. IT can additionally access popular sources of information to foster better quality of services for these Internet sources.
Remixing and repurposing data
IBM Mashup Center enables you to mix and transform information feeds to meet specific business needs. Feeds, independent of their source, can be remixed, merged, and preprocessed in a variety of ways. Supported mixing and transformation capabilities range from basic manipulation such as grouping and sorting to more advanced operations such as merging and transforming data:
- Augment: Supplement existing assets with additional context from other information sources with the "for each" operator
- Transform: Transform existing information with content that offers further insight. It includes functions for data manipulation including basics such as MIN, MAX, COUNT, and string concatenation | and advanced functions such as regular expressions, variance, and encoding.
- Group: Group complex information feeds into more consumable feeds for your users.
- Merge: Assemble multiple informational assets to produce a mutually collective asset.
- Sort: Sort your informational feeds alphabetically.
- Filter: Identify and navigate to the assets as needed.
- Combine: Assemble multiple informational assets in an additive manner.
- Publish: Share your asset to be further incorporated in other applications or feed mashups
IBM Mashup Center manages how feeds get mashed up from a variety of different users and enables caching of feeds for performance optimization. Because the feeds that IBM Mashup Center manages can come from many sources, and can be mixed and combined, the performance of these feeds can be affected by complicated underlying logic, busy source systems, and complex feed mashups. Feed caching can alleviate having to access source systems or re-execute logic or feed mashups because the resulting feed is retained in memory for reuse. Feed caching can increase the performance of your situational applications.
Feed caching can be easily set up to identify the life cycle of the cache or the time and frequency with which the feed needs to be refreshed. Your team can control how often your data is accessed at the feed source.
Additionally, feeds that are captured from the Internet and outside IT control may be unreliable. In certain situations feed caching can increase the reliability of external data sources traditionally outside of IT control.
Web 2.0 cataloging innovation
IBM Mashup Center includes a master catalog (reference) for all of your "mashable" assets, including information feeds, pages, and widgets. The catalog offers built-in Web 2.0 community features such as ratings, tagging, and commenting. These community-enhancing features help to illuminate the most useful assets, while also increasing productivity by encouraging reuse.
IBM Center plugs seamlessly into your existing environment (LDAP, Active Directory, or custom user directory) for authentication and authorization. You can control which individual users or groups can modify and view widgets, pages, and feeds using access control lists (ACLs). You can also control who can create informational feeds. By securing who can create and manipulate information sources, you can maintain a necessary level of control of your trusted information.
Reporting, asset monitoring, and tracking
The catalog enables comprehensive reporting, monitoring, and tracking of how mashable assets are being used. Security, access, and changes to every asset are logged and tracked. Auditable event logging can be mined for a wide range of insights, such as what assets are the highest rated or most discussed.
Reporting and logging can be valuable in supporting paid service subscriptions for external Web services. Because IBM Mashup Center can log who is accessing a service and how much time is spent using the service, IT can better manage chargebacks. Additionally, because patterns of information consumption can be analyzed and then optimized, logging gives you more opportunities for governance.
IBM Mashup Center includes OpenSearch support, which is the standard for how information feeds and widgets are shared and discovered with the mashup ecosystem at large. With OpenSearch, users can easily discover widgets, feeds, and pages in the IBM Mashup Center catalog
Lotus Widget Factory enables developers of all skill levels to rapidly generate iWidget 1.0-compliant widgets without coding. Intuitive wizards encapsulate common widget creation tasks and guide users through the creation process, increasing productivity and the speed of solution delivery. In addition, using the browser-based assembly tool within IBM Mashup Center, nontechnical users can save an assembly of widgets as a new widget, which can then be easily published to the catalog for use by others.

IPLA and Subscription and Support considerations
IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to an enterprise. You may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement (PoE). It is your responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license.
Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made.

A Value Unit is a pricing charge metric for program license entitlements which is based upon the quantity of a specific designated measurement used for a given program. Each program has a designated measurement. The most commonly used designated measurement is a processor core. However, for select Programs, there are other designated measurements such as users or resources which may include servers, client devices, and messages. The number of Value Unit entitlements required for a program depends on how the program is deployed in your environment and must be obtained from a Value Unit table. You must obtain a PoE for the calculated number of Value Unit entitlements for your implementation. The Value Unit entitlements are specific to a program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Unit entitlements of another program.
Processor (Value Unit)
A processor core is a functional unit within a computing device that interprets and executes instructions. A processor core consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic or logic unit. With multicore technology, each core is considered a processor. Not all processor cores require the same number of Processor Value Unit entitlements. To calculate the number of Processor Value Unit entitlements required, refer to the Processor Value Unit table on the following Web site
With full capacity licensing, a PoE must be acquired for the appropriate number of Processor Value Units based on all activated processor cores available for use on the server.
