They often make tradeoffs between different systems aspects while still ensuring consistency across domains and disciplines. Rational Rhapsody Design Manager assists cross-discipline teams in sharing, collaborating, and reviewing engineering information in an efficient, intuitive manner. Rhapsody Design Manager takes a further step in integrating with the Jazz platform by enabling systems engineers to work with version, variant, configuration, and change management. They can work directly on a Rhapsody model stored in a Jazz-based repository. This enables finer-grain access and change control that gives systems engineers a more flexible workflow for parallel development tightly coupled with lifecycle artifacts for better response to changes.
A common location on a Jazz repository for storage of the Rational Rhapsody design artifacts with other lifecycle artifacts, such as requirements and work items, enables a tighter workflow with the broader systems and software engineering lifecycle. Because they are stored in a common location, requirements can be traced and referenced with the design information without duplications since they are stored in a shared, server-side, repository.
A single source of truth is enabled between requirements from requirements management databases, Rational DOORS® , Rational Requirements Composer, and the Rhapsody model. Using Open Services for Lifecycle Collaboration (OSLC) links, you can establish and analyze traceability between the requirements and the design to help ensure delivery of high-quality designs that meet project objectives.
The new Rational Rhapsody Contributor role offers access to change management, report customization, and planning, design management, software configuration management, automation (build system), requirements management, and test management.

Rational Engineering Lifecycle Manager helps engineering teams to:
- Make effective and timely engineering decisions.
- Improve reuse of designs.
- Maintain compliance with standards by providing capabilities to visualize, analyze, and organize engineering lifecycle data and their relationships.
Overview
The products and systems that surround us and influence our lives are becoming smarter: more intelligent, instrumented, and interconnected. These products are increasingly complex as software delivers larger portions of the value of these innovative products and systems. Product development organizations are creating and managing larger, more complex, and more interrelated sets of engineering data. Old tools and processes for managing product development are strained by this complexity.
Additional and deeper dependencies across engineering domains create challenges for hardware and software co-design and other kinds of multi-disciplinary collaboration. Project development cycles lengthen. Staff costs increase. Too many defects escape notice until customer acceptance or field deployment. Opportunities for reuse may be missed.
At the same time, many organizations face pressure to get to market faster and drive cost out of the development process.
Rational Engineering Lifecycle Manager enhances the Rational solution for systems and software engineering by providing the capability to visualize, analyze, and organize systems product engineering data coming from many tools. It enables engineering teams to get a better understanding of the relationships in that data, so they can make more effective and timely engineering decisions.
Rational Engineering Lifecycle Manager uses Rational Jazz integration services to increase the visibility and value of engineering data.
- Get faster, more complete answers to key engineering questions across the lifecycle. Search and report on data across engineering disciplines, regardless of data source and location.
- Visualize and analyze engineering data and relationships in the context of user roles, product structure, development process, and project.
- Use views to navigate to specific engineering artifacts needed for a particular task, and open the artifacts in the tool that created the artifact.
- Analyze the impact of changes using visual and report-based representations of engineering artifacts and their relationships.
- Improve reuse of engineering artifacts and the components they represent.
Rational Engineering Lifecycle Manager indexes engineering data and makes the data available through custom role, product, process, and project views while honoring the security access settings on the data that it indexes.
Compared to alternative integration techniques, this federated, indexed approach has the potential to simplify deployment time and effort as well as reduce the run-time impact on engineering tools and the teams using them.

This release integrates Rational Software Architect into the Rational Solution for Collaborative Lifecycle Management (CLM) through enhanced Design Management capabilities. This allows teams to easily:
- Manage design changes.
- Collaborate on designs.
- Establish traceability with requirements.
- Understand the impact of a requirement or design change.
- Document designs.
Overview
Rational Software Architect Design Management capability makes it easy for teams to manage their designs, collaborate on designs with peers and stakeholders, and integrate software design into their Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) solution.
This announcement covers an update to Rational Software Architect (Software Announcement ZP12-0270, dated June 4, 2012 ) to add new Jazz-based Design Management V4.0 capabilities that complement the extensive design capability in the Rational Software Architect client.
These new and enhanced design management capabilities work with both Version 8.5 and Version 8.0.4.1 of the Rational Software Architect client and enable teams to:
- Reduce design time using the new design configuration management support that provides simplified change control for designs, and reduces the chances of change conflicts.
- Improve quality by collaborating on designs with peers and other stakeholders.
- Establish traceability between designs, requirements, change requests, test cases, and test plans; making it easier for stakeholders to quickly find the latest design related to their work.
- Know the impact of a design change or the impact of a requirement change on the design through a visual impact analysis.
- Keep an active repository or their designs allowing teams members to access the latest designs from either the Rational Software Architect client or using a web client.
- Quickly search designs from current and past projects to find reusable design components.
- Reduce the time required to meet regulatory and contractual requirements by automating the generation of designs documents based on templates or create live design documents as part of your project.
- Reduce administration time and costs with common user administration and lifecycle projects across Rational Team Concert , Rational Requirements Composer, Rational Quality Manager, and Rational Software Architect.
This update to Rational Software Architect adds new role-based offerings: Rational Software Architect Designer and Rational Software Architect Designer for WebSphere® Software. It provides a complete design solution that includes the client authoring, validation, and transformation capabilities and the Jazz-based server design management capabilities.
Existing users of Rational Software Architect can add the Design Management capability through the Rational Software Architect Extensions for Design Management (previously named Rational Software Architect Design Manager).
A new Contributor role is added to Rational Software Architect that allows extended team members to collaborate on the software designs. This Contributor role also provides full access to work items, planning, reporting, and read access (view and comment) to requirements and test artifacts from Rational Requirements Composer and Rational Quality Manager.
The Rational Software Architect Design Reviewer role is withdrawn from market (Software Announcement ZP12-0476, dated September 4, 2012 ) . Existing Rational Software Architect Design Reviewer users can continue to use these licenses with the new Design Management V4.0 server. New users should use the Rational Software Architect Contributor role for extended team members who need to collaborate on software designs.
