DESCRIPTION
AS/400 OPERATING SYSTEM/400 (OS/400)
USER PRODUCTIVITY:  The improvements with OS/400 usability are
focused to reduce the cost in time and training necessary to use and
operate the system for both the casual and advanced users.  The new
OS/400 Operational Assistant (OA) helps inexperienced AS/400 users to
easily complete daily system tasks.  OA provides an optional,
streamlined set of system menus that use non-data processing
terminology and simplified lists of functions.
User productivity is further enhanced with the OS/400 support of DASD
mirroring, which is supported on all AS/400 systems.  DASD mirroring
minimizes system down time in the event of a DASD failure by
maintaining a duplicate copy of all user selected DASD on the system.
Mirroring is specified on an auxiliary storage pool (ASP) basis and
requires duplicate DASD devices of the same device types for the
entire ASP.  If the entire system is to be mirrored, the DASD
capacity of the system must be doubled that of an equivalent
non-mirrored system.  If a DASD failure occurs in a mirrored ASP, in
most cases the system continues to operate without interruption and
repair or replacement of the failed DASD can be deferred until a
convenient time.  Depending on the DASD failure and DASD mirroring
configuration (on IBM 9406 only), concurrent maintenance of mirrored
DASD may allow system operation to continue during the repair of the
failed DASD.
For the experienced system user, printing is now easier to manage as
well as having simplified interfaces to determine and resolve
printing problems.  Enhancements include restarting print at a
specific page and stop print immediately so that the user is no
longer confused as to whether the request was successful.  'Pop-up
longer confused as to whether the request was successful.  'Pop-up
windows' have been added to view both the information about the
windows' have been added to view both the information about the
screen and the actual screen at the same time.
Programmer debug capabilities in conditional breakpoint support,
'skip" count and batch jobs are significantly enhanced, greatly
'skip" count and batch jobs are significantly enhanced, greatly
improving productivity.
The licensed internal code is enhanced to minimize seize contention
when a change is made to the data in a physical file, thereby
reducing response time.
Release 3 connectivity enhancements provide several functions that
make it easier to manage complex communication networks.  Each AS/400
on a Local Area Network (LAN) will automatically be configured so
that the other systems on the LAN can recognize and interact with it.
Enhanced configuration support for LAN-based personal computers (PC)
using APPN, significantly reduces the system configuration and
modifications required for an AS/400 system user, when configuring
PCs on a LAN.
In addition to the standard publications available for the AS/400,
the new AS/400 Softcopy Library offers selected AS/400 licensed
program publications on a CD-ROM disc.  The CD-ROM disc is accessed
from a CD-ROM drive attached to the user's personal computer.  The
IBM BookManager (TM) READ (R) licensed program provides the function
for accessing the publications.  BookManager READ is a prerequisite
for use with the AS/400 Softcopy Library.  The AS/400 Softcopy
Library will give users fast and easy access to product information.
AS/400 Softcopy Library is available in U.S. English only.

For specific details relating to IBM BookManager READ/DOS
Version 1.2 programs, IBM BookManager READ/2 Version 1.2 programs
(for OS/2), and prerequisite hardware, refer to Programming
Announcements 290-375 and 290-376, dated July 3, 1990.
SYSTEM MANAGEMENT:  The automated install process provides an
'installation profile" containing the parameters and options
'installation profile" containing the parameters and options
previously provided in an interactive manner during installation.
This installation profile enables the installation process to be
unattended except for required tape changes.  Now, users from a
central site can build distribution tapes to automate the
installation at the remote sites.  The installation profile allows
for necessary tailoring upon completion of the installation process.
After tailoring the system, the user can initiate the PTF
installation.  PTFs are applied and the system is automatically
re-IPLed.
The 'Install PTFs" function now supports the installation of
The 'Install PTFs" function now supports the installation of
electronically-delivered PTFs as easily as PTF packages delivered on
tape.  A new option on the 'power down system" function allows the
tape.  A new option on the 'power down system" function allows the
user to specify which copy of the licensed internal code to use for
the next IPL.  This simplifies the process of distributing and
installing PTFs on a remote system from a central site.
User management of disk space is increased with the
enhancement to general object support.  Additional information now
available in the object description of most object types include:
o   Date of last reference
o   Number of days used since last counter reset
o   Date of last counter reset
o   Name of user who created the object.
The OS/400 Link Problem Determination Aid (LPDA) support now
includes additional LPDA-2 commands to support IBM modems.  These
commands provide data about network components for problem
determination.  Now the user can more effectively manage a network of
systems interconnected via IBM LPDA modems.
       Token-Ring Network Management -- Single-Ring Server enhances
the AS/400 system as a Token-Ring LAN manager by providing active
management support of a single Token-Ring.  OS/400 now provides the
customer with a more complete set of LAN manager functions for small
Token-Ring networks.
OS/400 DSNX support is enhanced to include synchronous
protocols to NetView (R) Distribution Manager (NetView DM).  This
DSNX direct node support, with compression/decompression, provides
improved usability and potentially reduced line costs over switched
line connections and will keep the line active (session established)

until all the requests are complete on the AS/400 system.  DSX
Version 3 Release 2 VSE will support these enhancements.  Node
customization parameters provide the customer the ability to
optionally use a protocol which has the characteristics of data
transfer between systems (file size, frequency of transmission) that
best fit the user needs.  Node customization parameters could provide
the customer cost savings when initiating extra sessions (redialing)
may be more costly than sustaining an active connection until the
data transfer is complete.

BUSINESS SOLUTIONS:  OS/400 is enhanced to support new IBM print
devices.  The IBM LaserPrinter 4028 is an Intelligent Printer Data
Stream (IPDS) printer particularly attractive for use in a shared
environment when the application contains graphics, image and/or bar
code in addition to text, and letter-quality printing where quiet
operation is required.  An Envelope Feeder is available which
supports 75 envelopes.
For more information on these printers, refer to the PRINTERS
SUPPORTED and LIMITATIONS sections.
Intersystem Communications Function (ICF) Finance Support
enhancements enable the AS/400 user to explicitly configure a
Financial Branch System Services (FBSS) controller, thereby providing
for Token-Ring LAN support.  The Token-Ring LAN support includes SNA
LU0, LU1 and LU2.  In addition, support is provided for the
attachment/configurability of the Personal Banking Machines (IBM
4730, 4731, 4732, and 4736) and the Self-Service Transaction Station
(IBM 4737) on the AS/400 system.
ICF Retail Support enhancements include communication with the
Remote Change Management Server (RCMS) on an IBM 4684 Controller.
ISDN CONNECTIVITY:  The AS/400 communications support is expanded via
a connection to the Teleos Communications, Inc.  Teleos IRX9000 ISDN
Resource Exchange.  The IRX9000 enables the migration of existing
devices and applications to an Integrated Services Digital Network
(ISDN) environment by providing multiplexor access to ISDN in support
of voice, data and image services.
In support of AS/400, IRX9000 provides an IBM Token-Ring
Network (TRN) LAN attachment which will allow the AS/400, and other
TRN-attached equipment, to use ISDN networks for existing SNA LU6.2
data communications applications.  One such method of using the
IRX9000 with AS/400 is to allow ISDN network services to bridge up to
32 TRN LANs.  AS/400 customer investments are protected since
existing TRN devices and applications can use ISDN without
modification.  ISDN can also provide attractive cost savings and
bandwidth flexibility to support the AS/400 in an active
communications environment.
For customers who need access to applications and data that
reside elsewhere, the new OS/400 connectivity features broaden
coexistence with other systems.
INVESTMENT PROTECTION:  The OS/400 has taken an important step in
protecting the customer's investment by introducing supported
low-level interfaces to system functions.  Customers and IBM Business
Partners are now able to use these new system function interfaces to
create system-type applications via these supported
release-to-release compatible interfaces.  To achieve acceptable
performance, some applications may require information provided in
selected system control blocks.  Call-level interfaces will retrieve
this required system control block information.
Customer investments in OS/400 applications are protected by
SAA which provides standards for applications that enable them to be
moved between system platforms in our customers' emerging cooperative
processing environment.  The SAA Common Programming Interfaces (CPI)
include PrintManager/400, Query Management and Procedures Language
400/REXX (REXX).  These are all building blocks for the evolving SAA
environment on the AS/400 system and other SAA compliant systems.
The PrintManager/400 Interface provides a consistent method
for writing C/400 (TM) applications for sending files to the system
spool for printing.
Query Management provides customer investment protection by
allowing the use of query applications currently running outside of
OS/400.  Query Management implements the SAA Level 1 definition of
SAA CPI.  Refer to the LIMITATIONS section for information on the
performance of Query Management.
The REXX interpreter additionally protects the customer
investment in and expands his use of currently developed SAA REXX
procedures outside OS/400.  The REXX interpreter implements the SAA
Level 1 definition of Procedures Language, as well as, the SAA Level
2 definition with the exception of REXX language support for stream
I/O.  Refer to the LIMITATIONS section for information on REXX
performance.
The CSP/AE component of OS/400 contains enhanced support for
the execution of Cross System Product applications to maintain and
enhance compatibility between Cross System Product environments.
(TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation.
GROWTH ENABLEMENT:  The AS/400 is committed to supporting the
significant communications and connectivity standards emerging today.
Functions new with this announcement include a native Ethernet LAN
attachment, a new 16/4Mb IBM Token-Ring LAN attachment, and
integrated electronic customer support functions across a faster
communication line.
In addition, AS/400 communications expand to support
Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) functions through the use
of the Teleos IRX9000 ISDN Resource Exchange.
These enhancements enable the AS/400 to grow with the
expanding needs of customers by supporting new application
development and responding to customer requirements.

LaserPrinter 4028 Model AS1.
Refer to Product Announcement 190-117, dated August 21, 1990.
LIMITATIONS:
OPERATING SYSTEM/400:  Query Management and the existing AS/400 Query
(5728-QU1) differ significantly in function and performance.  Query
Management does not replace AS/400 Query.  Interactive, ad hoc detail
reports run more slowly on Query Management than on AS/400 Query.
Users should not plan to convert existing Control Language
(CL) programs to Procedures Language 400/REXX (REXX) or write new
REXX programs without considering that REXX is an interpreted
language without data types and will not perform as well as compiled
CL programs.
The selection of typographic fonts by point size is not
supported by the OS/400.  Typographic fonts with unique font IDs are
selectable.  Font selection is limited to font IDs less than 32767
for printing through OS/400 printer files.
The configuration of the IBM LaserPrinter 4028 as AFP and the
downloading of fonts to the printer are not supported by the OS/400.
Details of AS/400 support and limitations for this printer are

USER GROUP REQUIREMENTS:  This announcement satisfies or partially
satisfies requirements from one or more of the World Wide User Group
Communities, which include Australasian SHARE GUIDE (ASG), COMMON,
GUIDE, European G.U.I.D.E., Japan GUIDE SHARE (JGS), Latin American
GUIDE (LAG), SHARE EUROPE and SHARE.
PLANNING INFORMATION
CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES:  Before installing Release 3 licensed
programs, the MEMORANDUM TO AS/400 USERS (shipped with the
machine-readable material) should be read for information necessary
to plan the installation process -- including estimation of the time
required.
SYSTEM INTEGRITY:  System Integrity is an important characteristic of
the OS/400 product.  For systems running with the highest security
level (system value QSECURITY=40), IBM will now accept APARS that
describe exposures to system integrity as defined below.
The machine architecture of AS/400 enforces controls requiring
users be authorized to objects referenced when running a machine
instruction.  OS/400 has been developed using programming guidelines
that maintain system integrity and control access to user data.
Release 3 will introduce additional protection to isolate customer
and system objects.  This protection is designed to prevent
unauthorized access to objects and the unauthorized use of privileged
system interfaces and restricted machine instructions.
Since it is not possible to certify that any system has
perfect integrity, IBM will accept APARS that describe exposures to
the system integrity of the OS/400 System.  System integrity APARs
describe problems encountered when a program on the AS/400 introduces

an exposure to system integrity provided that running under OS/400
the user or program are not authorized under a method under the users
control.  IBM will continue its efforts to enhance the integrity of
OS/400 and will respond promptly when exposures are identified and
reported in Release 3 or subsequent releases of OS/400.
OS/400 System Integrity is defined as the inability of any
program running under OS/400 not authorized by a method under the
customers control to:
o   Cause an application program to run in system state or gain
access to restricted system interfaces or machine instructions
o   Access/modify any object to which the user or the program is not
    authorized.
SECURITY, AUDITABILITY AND CONTROL
These products use the security and auditability features of
the IBM OS/400 Support.  Use of these facilities is optional.  The
security measures supplied by OS/400 are designed to reduce the risk
of users changing or destroying resources, but does not prevent it.
The OS/400 security features include the use of passwords, a security
option to limit a user's ability to perform functions provided by
customer-designed menus, and a security option to limit read/write
access for files, libraries and folders during normal operations.  To
achieve increased security, the OS/400 controls should be combined
with physical security and a division of duties.
User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and
implementation of security features, administrative procedures and
appropriate controls in application systems and communication
facilities.

ONE-TIME CHARGE:  Customers who pay a one-time charge for a licensed
program receive enhancements and future releases, if any, at no
additional charge.  Significant new function may be offered as an

optional feature and charged for separately.  If a replacement
program is announced and the customer elects to license the
replacement program for a one-time charge, an upgrade charge may
apply.
VARIABLE CHARGES:  The applicable processor-based one-time charge
will be based on the group of the designated machine on which the
licensed program is licensed for use.
For upgrades of one-time charge licenses to machines in a
higher group, the upgrade charge will be the difference in the
current charges between the two groups.  For downgrades of one-time
charge licenses to a machine in a lower group, there will be no
adjustment or refund of one-time charges paid.
