Overview

Top rule

Rational Programming Patterns leverages Pacbase clients' investment by modernizing the pattern-driven development paradigm and the enterprise-wide repository services within the current IBM strategic delivery platform. Through a low-cost migration, Rational Programming Patterns introduces Pacbase clients into a development environment that surpasses Pacbase capabilities. Rational Programming Patterns limits the nonregression tests and the retraining of the Pacbase developers, and also offers the native COBOL development world tools to reach a high development and maintenance productivity.

Rational Programming Patterns V9.6.2 broadens its installation and migration spectrum with a Quality Control package for AIX and a Pactables package that allows to create or modify table descriptions. The AS/400 generation target is now fully implemented upon migration and development.

Product usability is improved with design editor enhancements that enable users to copy-paste multiple lines. This release also adds preferences to manage the display in the editable tables of the editors.

Search function enhancements include a new Advanced Design Search for specific searches and additional search results options. With a customizable display and columns that vary according to search, the search results view now provides the capability to copy-paste instances. The server search result view includes a Compare choice for an effective impact analysis, while the search in the COBOL code is now more precise because filters are available.

Version 9.6.2 brings improvements to the COBOL code management. The generation preview enables developers to see the impact of their changes before they overwrite or keep the existing COBOL code. The design of an instance that is selected in the COBOL code can be easily opened with a quick element lookup feature. The references on the micropattern-generated lines are detected with more precision.

New preconditions reinforce the controls of the generated files to ensure the quality of your code.

Description

Top rule

Enhanced migration and installation

  • AS/400 target completeness. Recognition of the O type of COBOL code, of the AS/400 Database Block types, and of the Y indicator (attributes in the Screen -CE Lines).
  • Rational Programming Patterns Quality Control package for Rational Developer for AIX and Linux (RDAL).
  • Pactables package, which is available in the package of the migration procedures.

Enhanced design editors

  • Special copy-paste in some design editors. Columns can be copied to an external editor or to another instance of the same entity, and then pasted. This new feature applies to the Report -L Lines, Data Element -D Lines, and -G Lines of all entities.
  • Display of Data Element output format in the Level, Address, and Length tab of Segments.
  • Swap of the Description and Link columns in the -GE Lines.
  • Capability to copy and paste multiple lines in the -GG Lines of a Database Block.
  • Manual specification is now possible for the label and Data Element attributes in the Screen -CE Lines and for the organization and sort key composition in the Program -CD Lines. To save time, these can be entered manually, without opening the wizards.
  • New column to easily select multiple lines in editable tables.
  • Dialog and Screen types now editable. A client-type Dialog can be changed into another client-type Dialog and a Screen type can be changed into another type that is compatible with the Dialog type.
  • New column to easily select multiple lines in editable tables.
  • Usage of Data Element is now filtered according to the Data Element type.
  • Data Element type can now be selected upon creation. The default type value no longer needs to be modified in the Data Element design editor.

Enhanced search and impact analysis

  • New Advanced Design Search and Server Advanced Design Search. Standard advanced searches are available on Data Elements (search from Data Element formats, relational names, or numeric Data Elements) and Screens (search from transaction codes). Search results are displayed in the standard search result view.
  • Enhanced Design Search result view. The result can be displayed as a table or a hierarchy. The columns vary according to the search. Each column can be sorted and the order of the columns can be selected. An instance can now be copied from the result view and pasted to another project in the view, or to the same project but under a new name.
  • Enhanced Server Design Search result view. A Compare choice is now available and the design build path of the location can be displayed from the Properties of a stream line.
  • Enhanced Macro cross-references view. This view is automatically refreshed after a modification in the -CP Lines and now contains a choice to view the previous searches.
  • Improved detection of references on micropattern generated lines.

Enhanced code management and generation

  • Filters are available to narrow search scope in the COBOL code.
  • New choice in the Design Explorer view to preview the COBOL code. The code of a previously-generated instance is generated again and compared with the previous code in the compare editor. Users can validate the code modifications. They can overwrite the previous code or leave it as is.
  • Generate button now available in the Generated Code Structure view.
  • Improved desynchronization of the COBOL file after modifications in the -CD Lines or the WF micropattern. The COBOL file of a program is no longer marked desynchronized if the modifications of the Data Structures called in the -CD Lines or the WF micropattern do not impact the code.
  • New property on micropattern call lines to indent the generated lines.
  • Quick element lookup from the COBOL code. You can open the design of an instance that is selected in the code.

Enhanced controls upon delivery

  • New precondition to prohibit the delivery of the generated files that contain reconciliation warnings.
  • New precondition to control that the generated files were generated with the generation process implemented from Rational Programming Patterns V9.6.1. Projects can be selected to limit the scope of the precondition.

New preferences

  • New administrator preferences. Some Rational Programming Patterns preferences (such as those preferences that forbid the deletion or the move of a used instance and severity levels of Macro problems) are managed on the RTC server with an administrator profile. When users log into the server in Rational Programming Patterns, the corresponding local preferences automatically take on the server values and cannot be modified.
  • New preferences for the design editors. There is now a preference to open the design editors in "Expand all" mode and another preference to indicate the position of the buttons relative to the tables of the design editors.
  • Web client completeness on all pattern types and colorization of the COBOL code (same colors as in the Eclipse client).

Accessibility by people with disabilities

A US Section 508 Accessibility Compliance Report containing details on accessibility compliance can be found on the Product accessibility information website.

Statement of good security practices

Top rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through intrusion prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a regulatory compliant, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
