IBM® Implementation Services for GDPS® Version 4.1 and GDPS Continuous Availability V2.1 are being introduced to replace GDPS V3 and GDPS/Active-Active V1 respectively. These solutions have been enhanced with a number of new capabilities that address improved cross-platform support, enhanced availability, increased scalability, and simplified systems management.

GDPS highlights

Highlights of the enhancements to the control code for GDPS Version 4.1, available at the time of general availability, include:

  • Logical corruption protection (LCP) feature for GDPS Metro to enable the capture of multiple, secure, point-in-time copies of production data that can later be used for identification, repair, or replacement of production data that has been compromised by either cyber or internal attack or corrupted by system failures or human error
  • GDPS Testcopy manager to extend the existing capabilities to create point-in-time test copies of data
  • New migration utilities to ease the process of migrating between GDPS releases
  • Extensions to the GDPS Health Checks provided
  • Support for managing KVM as a hypervisor for workloads running on IBM Z
  • GDPS graphical user interface extensions for GDPS Global - GM
  • GDPS Global - GM Dynamic Virtual TCP/IP Address exploitation for GEOGROUP and Rsys communication
  • GDPS Global - GM performance optimization for GDPS-managed Heat Map Transfer
  • A number of GDPS-supplied procedure enhancements for managing an environment exploiting Multi-Target PPRC in a GDPS Metro Global configuration
  • A number of enhancements to all solutions in the areas of reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS)

Highlights for GDPS Version 4.1 that are being previewed in this announcement and will be delivered through the service stream include:

  • GDPS graphical user interface extensions for GDPS Metro solutions
  • GDPS Metro support for FB/Open disk without a CKD access device
  • GDPS Metro support for managing workloads running in IBM Z Secure Service Containers
  • LCP feature for GDPS Global solutions
  • GDPS Global - XRC enhancements as follows:
    • Full offline volume support
    • Device based management
    • Alternate subchannel set support

Highlights for GDPS Continuous Availability Version 2.1 include:

  • Extension of the Zero Data Loss configuration to support symmetrical replication between both sites in the GDPS environment
  • Support for workloads that are exploiting MQ Clusters
  • Replacement GDPS graphical user interface based on IBM WebSphere® Liberty profile

GDPS solution restructuring

In addition, the GDPS solutions have been restructured as follows:

GDPS Metro provides the capabilities of the GDPS solutions that manage synchronous data replication based on IBM Metro Mirror.

GDPS Global comes in two distinct configurations, one providing functions to manage a Global Mirror replication environment and the second to manage a z/OS® Global Mirror (also known as XRC) environment.

GDPS Metro Global covers the 3-site and 4-site solutions which combine the capabilities of the GDPS Metro and GDPS Global solutions.

GDPS Continuous Availability replaces the GDPS/Active-Active solution.

IBM Implementation Services for GDPS is a set of high availability and disaster recovery application solutions for IBM Z and distributed environments.

GDPS solutions can manage the remote copy configuration and storage subsystems, and automate Parallel Sysplex® operational tasks and failure recovery, all from a central point of control, thereby improving application availability across single or multiple sites. GDPS delivers continuous availability through planned and unplanned disk outages.

GDPS Continuous Availability provides an automated disaster recovery solution at virtually any distance between a primary site and a recovery site, based on software-based replication.

Through the GDPS offerings, IBM helps provide a comprehensive end-to-end automated, scalable, and flexible business continuity and disaster recovery solution.

Today, IBM is announcing the following new capabilities for the IBM Implementation Services for GDPS family of solutions:

  • Planning to determine availability requirements, configuration recommendations, and implementation and testing plans
  • Lessons learned from close to 900 implementations worldwide
  • GDPS control code installation and policy customization
  • Education and training on GDPS setup and operations
  • Onsite implementation assistance
  • Project management and support throughout the engagement
  • One year of ongoing support services for the GDPS control code, providing regular maintenance and access to the IBM GDPS support center

IBM Implementation Services for GDPS is a suite of high availability and disaster recovery offerings for IBM Z environments.

GDPS manages the remote copy configuration and storage subsystems, and automates Parallel Sysplex operational tasks and failure recovery, all from a central point of control, thereby improving application availability across single or multiple sites. GDPS delivers continuous availability through planned and unplanned disk outages.

GDPS Continuous Availability is designed to provide a comprehensive continuous availability and business continuity solution to support two data center sites separated by unlimited distance to help you achieve recovery point objective (RPO) and recovery time objective (RTO) goals. GDPS controls the software replication provided by the IBM InfoSphere® Data Replication products for DB2®, IMS™, and VSAM data on z/OS and orchestrates the routing of workloads between the sites in the Active/Active environment in conjunction with the IBM Multisite Workload Lifeline product.

GDPS supports all major transaction managers (for example, CICS® Transaction Server and IMB) and database managers (for example, DB2, IMS, and VSAM), and leverages these key IBM technologies to provide a unique solution:

  • Sysplex cluster
  • Systems Automation for z/OS
  • IBM System Storage® DS8000
  • PPRC (Peer-to-Peer Remote Copy) for synchronous remote copy within distances of up to 100 km
  • XRC (eXtended Remote Copy) for asynchronous remote copy over unlimited distances
  • Global Mirror for unlimited distances
  • Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexor
  • HyperSwap
  • FlashCopy®
  • TS7700

GDPS supports environments with workloads running on Linux® on IBM Z as guests under the z/VM® operating system.

GDPS supports environments using non-IBM disk storage subsystems from vendors that support and exploit the IBM Remote Copy architecture.

  • Planning to determine availability requirements, configuration recommendations, and implementation and testing plans
