Key requirements

Top rule

For details, see the Hardware requirements and Software requirements sections.

Note: Version 7.0 and 7.0.1 releases no longer support Tomcat as an application server. Clients should deploy the bundled IBM WebSphere® Application Server Liberty that comes with Engineering Lifecycle Management Jazz applications.

Optional Engineering Workflow Management clustering capabilities require IBM IoT MessageSight, for which a limited use license is included with the primary Engineering Lifecycle Management products at no extra cost. Clustering has other unique prerequisites, such as supporting only WebSphere Liberty for deployment.

Certain optional global configuration management capabilities require IoT MessageSight, including:

  • The capability to include configurations from external global configuration management applications in a configuration hierarchy
  • The capability to see the components that are part of Engineering Workflow Management and IBM Rhapsody Model Manager streams and baselines

IoT MessageSight runs only on Red Hat® Enterprise Linux®.

Engineering Lifecycle Management 7.0.1 adds support for the Microsoft™ Edge Chromium browser and drops support for Microsoft Internet Explorer 11. If you need continued Microsoft Internet Explorer 11 support, consider deferring upgrading to Engineering Lifecycle Management 7.0.1 and stay on versions 7.0 or 6.0.6.1, which support Microsoft Internet Explorer 11.

Organizations that want to deploy Engineering Lifecycle Management 7.0.1 will need to consider:

  • Using Microsoft's strategic and faster Microsoft Edge Chromium-based browser on Microsoft Windows™ 10
  • Using a Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox browser on Microsoft Windows 10

Note: Engineering Workflow Management 7.0 and 7.0.1 no longer support Microsoft Windows 7. If you require continued Microsoft Windows 7 support on a project, it would be possible to run an Engineering Workflow Management 6.0.6.1 client against an Engineering Lifecycle Management 7.x server. This could give some development teams access to Microsoft Windows 7 compatible Eclipse and Microsoft Visual Studio clients on Engineering Workflow Management 6.0.6.1, while other teams could begin using Engineering Workflow Management 7.x clients against an Engineering Lifecycle Management 7.x server.

Be advised that a mixed mode N-1 client and N server has about a 10% degradation in Engineering Workflow Management client performance for all users.

Description

Top rule

Engineering Lifecycle Management 7.0.1 helps systems engineers and software developers define requirements and address them, respond efficiently to change, and create high-quality designs faster, while controlling development costs and meeting compliance needs.

Global configuration management

Global streams and baselines provide a shared development context across tools and teams. To help teams find and use global configuration in large global configuration trees, and to enable them to further tailor their use of global configurations to their unique development process, Engineering Lifecycle Management 7.0.1 includes the following enhancements:

  • Capability to perform more powerful queries, including subqueries, query for nonexistence, and query across project areas
  • Permissions to add or remove links, distinct from the capability to modify global configurations
  • Capability to customize the suffix separator in configuration names
  • New "Committed By" and "Committed On" attributes added to the baseline details section

User interface modernization

Engineering Lifecycle Management 7.0.1 continues to advance the modernization of the user interface that was started in version 7.0. Changes in this release, across the solution, include buttons, links and breadcrumbs, tabs, dialogs and modals, and IBM Document Builder consistency within the Engineering Lifecycle Management portfolio.

Agile at scale

Improvements in functionality to support agile and scaled agile organizations include:

  • New templates to support Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) 5.0 with additional capabilities consistent with the SAFe methodology:
    • SAFe 5.0 templates that are used in the creation of a SAFe-based lifecycle project area
    • Updated Portfolio Epic work item type workflow to include minimum viable product (MVP) and persevering states in the implementation state group
    • Added new Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities, Threats (SWOT) analysis and Threats, Opportunities, Weaknesses, Strengths (TOWS) matrix artifact type to support Portfolio and Value Stream Canvas
    • Updated strategic theme artifact template to include an objectives and key results (OKR) table to more easily define strategic themes
    • New scope attribute added to the vision artifact type to enable the defining of the level (portfolio, solution, program, team) that owns the vision
  • Name and save program boards to enable a team or Engineering Workflow Management project area to have multiple program boards
  • Configuration of task boards to show features broken down into stories (program level) and stories broken down into tasks (team level) to support SAFe Program Increment planning
  • Specification of external Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs) for type definitions in SAFe templates, which can simplify reporting when using IBM Lifecycle Query Engine as a data source and some data exchange scenarios
  • Deprecation of SAFe 4.5 templates

Engineering Requirements Management DOORS Next 7.0.1

Enhancements in version 7.0.1:

  • A key focus of Engineering Requirements Management DOORS Next 7.x is to extend the overall scale of data that can be managed by using a DOORS Next Requirements Management server. Performance testing information for Engineering Requirements Management DOORS Next 7.0 can be found on the Jazz website, including how the solution was tested and the types of loads that were supported. Testing continued in version 7.0.1 and can now support up to 1,000 concurrent users working on a single Engineering Requirements Management server using an Oracle database.
  • When using change sets to modify requirements, it is common for dependencies between change sets to be created when multiple people change the same requirements or are making changes in the same module when there are changes to the structure of the module. Whereas DOORS Next 7.0 mandated delivering dependent change sets, Engineering Requirements Management DOORS Next 7.0.1 enables dependencies to be overruled when selecting change sets for delivery.
  • Requirements Interchange Format (ReqIF) is improved in the way attachments and graphical elements are used as part of requirements information. Where possible, DOORS Next 7.0.1 can import OLE elements from applications such as DOORS directly into attachments in DOORS Next. DOORS Next can export graphical elements such as diagrams in a format that can be seen but not edited in other requirement tools, including DOORS.
  • Trace column information can be tailored to be more succinct in the information that is displayed, including the use of traversable link indicators rather than displaying more verbose URLs.

Engineering Requirements Management DOORS 9.7.2

Engineering Requirements Management DOORS 9.7.x was introduced to enhance usability while focusing on integrating Engineering Requirements Management DOORS more closely with the IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management portfolio as a whole. Enhancements to Engineering Requirements Management DOORS 9.7.2 include the following:

  • Support for collaboration with Engineering Lifecycle Management and Global Configurations is extended, enabling the DOORS user to see and create trace links to Engineering Lifecycle Management Open Services for Lifecycle Collaboration (OSLC) data placed under configuration management.
  • Reporting is enhanced. The most significant improvement is the capability to report on requirements volatility by using the IBM Jazz Reporting System Report Builder (using the Engineering Lifecycle Management data warehouse data source).
  • ReqIF interaction with IBM Engineering DOORS Next is improved to enable OLE data from DOORS to be sent directly to DOORS Next as attachments without the need for wrapping elements. It is also possible to see DOORS Next diagrams for review in DOORS.
  • The DOORS database explorer can show modules and their baselines to help make it easier to open the correct version. Optionally, the module explorer can limit the display to active objects covered by an active filter.

Engineering Systems Design Rhapsody 9.0.1

Improvements to Engineering Systems Design Rhapsody 9.0.1 include the following:

  • More configuration management actions can be completed in Rhapsody with fewer user actions. A "Unit with Descendants" submenu has been added to the pop-up menu for Rhapsody model units. This submenu makes it possible to carry out Engineering Workflow Management actions such as lock, check-in, and deliver on a unit and all of its descendants that are defined as units. The "Unit with Descendants" option is visible when the value of the property ShowCMStatusOfSubUnits is set to "True" and the unit has descendants that were defined as separate units.
  • Improvements to HTML document generation include reporting on any domain using the language of the domain, based on the type of project and profile terminology. This includes models based on Automotive Open System Architecture (AUTOSAR) and Unified Profile for DoDAF/MODAF (UPDM) and their own domain-specific languages.
  • AUTOSAR profile improvements include support of the complete AUTOSAR Adaptive platform workflow, support for AUTOSAR Adaptive platform tables, and the capability to create Adaptive Port Prototypes for Port Interfaces.

Engineering Systems Design Rhapsody - Model Manager 7.0.1

Engineering Systems Design Rhapsody - Model Manager 7.0 became a plug-in to Engineering Workflow Management instead of a separate product. This enabled Engineering Workflow Management to manage the configuration of Rhapsody models and code on the same Engineering Workflow Management server. Engineering Systems Design Rhapsody - Model Manager 7.0.1 includes changes in license consumption to support two deployment modes: Model Manager Server and Model and Code Management Server. The IBM Rhapsody Model Manager Systems and Software Engineer license is for team members who are working on designs and is consumed in both modes.

Enhancements in version 7.0.1:

  • Model Manager Server: This option entitles you to perform configuration management operations on your Rhapsody models but not on code or any other artifacts. You are entitled only to use the IBM Change and Configuration Management application for Rhapsody model management when the Change and Configuration Management application is purchased and deployed as a model management server. When you deploy in this mode, a Rhapsody user consumes a Rhapsody Model Manager license for Systems and Software Engineer.
  • Model and Code Management Server: This option entitles you to perform all the configuration management operations that are supported by Engineering Workflow Management, including configuration management operations on Rhapsody models and code. You are entitled to use the Change and Configuration Management application for Rhapsody model management, code management, to perform build operations, use the integrations to IBM Rational ClearCase® and ClearQuest® and Git, and leverage distributed source control management (SCM) when the Change and Configuration Management application is purchased and deployed as a model and code management server. When you deploy in this mode, a Rhapsody user consumes a Rhapsody Model Manager license for Systems and Software Engineer and an Engineering Workflow Management Developer license.

For more information, see the Client access license management web page.

Statement of good security practices

Top rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through intrusion prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a regulatory compliant, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
