Overview
Bottom rule

Every day your z/OS-based applications generate large amounts of critical business information and other output that must be delivered quickly, accurately, efficiently, and in a variety of formats to clients, employees, partners, and suppliers all over the globe. The large number of formats and technologies can be complex to manage, and can make optimizing your output environment challenging. You may not need to change your z/OS output to manage these challenges. Together with Infoprint Server for z/OS, an optional feature of IBM z/OS (5650-ZOS), you can use the Print Transform from AFP products for Infoprint Server for z/OS to help transform your output transparently, without rewriting any applications, to help gain increased flexibility and efficiency for your production operations by utilizing a wider choice of technology, protocols, and formats. Infoprint Server is an operational prerequisite, but is not required to install the transform products.

Maximize the reach and optimize the distribution of your z/OS information with the three Print Transform products from IBM:

  • Print Transform from AFP to PDF for Infoprint Server for z/OS, V1.2 (Print Transform AFPxPDF, 5655-TF1) is designed to transform output from AFP to PDF format.
  • Print Transform from AFP to PCL for Infoprint Server for z/OS, V1.2 (Print Transform AFPxPCL, 5655-TF2) is designed to transform output from AFP to PCL format.
  • Print Transform from AFP to PostScript for Infoprint Server for z/OS, V1.2 (Print Transform AFPxPS, 5655-TF3) is designed to transform output from AFP to PostScript format.

Transforming AFP to PDF lets you turn print output into electronic output for more timely delivery, streamlining the information flow within your organization as it helps reduce or eliminate costs associated with printing. For example, you may have employees in home offices or traveling, and sending printed output simply is not practical. PDF documents may be more useful than paper documents, by including bookmarks that let the user navigate easily and quickly through the content. Also, AFP documents converted into PDF may be more easily integrated into your enterprise's content management solution, to help support critical business processes.

Privacy of information legislation and concerns over the protection of sensitive client information have created an increased focus on security. AFP output may be encrypted while it is being converted to PDF to help provide for security-rich electronic delivery with Print Transform from AFP to PDF for Infoprint Server for z/OS.

The Print Transform from AFP products for Infoprint Server for z/OS are designed to be an integral part of your z/OS-based enterprise output management infrastructure and may give you the flexibility and delivery options you need for output management. They allow you to print z/OS Advanced Function Printing (AFP)-based output on network-attached printers that support PCL, PostScript, or PDF for personal or departmental use, without moving data or resources off of the z/OS system.

Product Registration Services support

With this new release, the Print Transform from AFP products for Infoprint Server for z/OS are designed to use z/OS MVS™ Product Registration Services for enablement. This support, modeled after existing support for priced, optional features of z/OS, allows you to specify that the Print Transform from AFP product for Infoprint Server for z/OS is enabled on systems on which it is licensed and disabled on systems where it is not in use by using an appropriate IFAPRDxx parmlib member. It is designed to allow you to enable it quickly and easily after licensing the product by updating the parmlib member and issuing a SET PROD operator command. For more information on this support, see the z/OS MVS Programming: Product Registration publication.

Value of print and output on z/OS

The Infoprint Server feature of IBM z™/OS and its companion Infoprint Transform products can help provide a highly available, well-integrated output solution to support business communication throughout your enterprise network and over the internet to suppliers, partners, and clients with a broad array of output options. As a result, you can help lower total cost of ownership for output delivery and management.

Infoprint Server for z/OS can help to significantly reduce the total cost of ownership for output delivery and management by consolidating print workloads, helping to improve print management productivity, and helping to protect your current investment in distributed printers and print applications. In addition, the Infoprint Central, a component of Infoprint Server for z/OS, is a web-based print management user interface that allows help desk operators, print administrators, and users to view print jobs, queues, and printers. Depending upon their security authorization, they can hold, move, cancel, and release jobs; turn printers online and offline; pinpoint network connectivity problems; track Infoprint Central actions by user ID; and perform many other functions for job and printer management. This print management tool can help you reduce the overall cost of distributed print management by making it easier and faster to train new operators and by giving them a productivity tool to more quickly diagnose and solve print-related problems.

The Print Transform from AFP products for Infoprint Server for z/OS can give you the flexibility and delivery options you need for output management. They allow you to print z/OS Advanced Function Presentation (AFP)-based output on network-attached printers that support PCL, PostScript, or PDF for personal or departmental use.

Specified operating environment

Hardware requirements

Print Transform from AFP products for Infoprint Server for z/OS, V1.2 require:

  • A z Systems™ server
  • Printers that support PCL5, PCL5c, or PCL5e for output transformed from AFP into PCL
  • Printers that support PostScript Level 2 or 3 for output transformed from AFP into PostScript

Software requirements

Print Transform from AFP products for Infoprint Server for z/OS, V1.2 require:

  • z/OS V2.1 (5650-ZOS), or later.
  • Infoprint Server for z/OS, an optional, priced feature of z/OS, V2.1, or later. Infoprint Server is an operational prerequisite, but is not required to install the transform products.
  • Adobe™ Acrobat Viewer for viewing output transformed from AFP to PDF.

Performance considerations

Transforming print jobs from the data stream in which they were created to another data stream will use more system resources than printing the same job to a printer that supports the native data stream. The print file resulting from the transforms may be larger than the original input print file. The impact on system and network resources will vary depending upon the print volume, the print data streams processed, and the current utilization of the system and network resources.

Transform execution speed varies with the data stream type, job length, output resolution, screening algorithms (for images), level of encryption, and density and complexity of the pages in the print file. In particular, PostScript and PDF transforms vary greatly in complexity, and transform speeds may vary significantly for similar, but different jobs.

Security, auditability, and control

Print Transform from AFP products for Infoprint Server for z/OS, V1.2 use the security and auditability features of the host z/OS operating system.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.
