Description
Bottom rule

IMS V15 QPP is the latest release of IBM's enduring hierarchical database management software for online transaction processing (OLTP), designed to respond to the transformative impact of digital business. The IMS V15 QPP release delivers capabilities that help:

  • Enterprise architects promote business growth on a platform that emphasizes scalability, availability, security, and cost per transaction
  • System programmers utilize dynamic configuration capabilities that help reduce outages and increase availability
  • Application developers shrink the time to market for new cloud and mobile applications
  • Database administrators manage databases in an open and industry-standard way

Select features offered as part of the IMS V15 QPP are:

  • Database

Enhancements to IMS V15 QPP Database, and to the IMS Enterprise Suite, provide value to database administrators (DBAs) and application developers:

    • DBAs can modify an IMS V15 QPP data entry database (DEDB), by using the DEDB Alter utility in an IMS catalog environment, without requiring a database outage.
    • DBAs can expand the scope of schema changes made possible with the DEDB Alter utility.
    • An application developer can develop applications that easily access IMS V15 QPP data from distributed platforms by using Java and web services.

Enterprise clients frequently have DBAs manage both IMS and IBM DB2 for z/OS® databases. DBAs, who have a fundamental understanding of relational databases, can apply those same skills to create or modify IMS hierarchical databases.

  • API economy
    • Enhancements to IMS Enterprise Suite in support of API creation and management enable IMS V15 QPP clients to participate in the API economy with greater ease.
    • IMS V15 interoperates with z/OS Connect Enterprise Edition. Using z/OS Connect Enterprise Edition, an API developer can:
      • Deploy and test APIs directly from the API editor.
      • Map an existing API to z/OS back end applications, requiring little to no additional code.

IMS Transaction Manager offers functionality to support IMS transactions that can be repurposed as APIs. The IMS Enterprise Suite Explorer for Development offering provides tooling needed to assist in transforming transactions to services.

COBOL developers create consumable services from IMS COBOL applications. API developers create APIs that map to these IMS services.

  • Cloud

IMS V15 QPP provides value to system programmers, DBAs, and application developers with enhancements that help position IMS as a cloud-based solution and simplify management of IMS.

    • System programmers, DBAs and application developers, by using fully configurable z/OS Management Facility (z/OSMF) work flow templates, can quickly and easily deploy, manage, and remove instances of IMS V15 QPP resources in a consistent and repeatable way. This allows provisioning and deprovisioning of IMS databases and systems similar to a cloud environment.
    • System programmers can run a Batch Message Processing (BMP) or Java batch region (JBP) without having the program predefined.
    • System programmers can define certain IMS attributes without a system definition and generation.

Deprecations

The following changes apply to IMS Enterprise Suite for z/OS V3.2.1 (5655-TDA).

  • No further enhancements will be delivered for IMS Mobile Feature Pack for z/OS Connect (FMID JAHF32A). IMS Enterprise Suite for z/OS V3.2.1, which was made available February 26, 2016, is the last release to include this component. Clients should use the IMS service provider in z/OS Connect Enterprise Edition (5655-CEE) instead.
  • No further enhancements will be made to the IMS Java Message Service API (FMID JAHF322).

The following changes apply to IMS Enterprise Suite for Distributed Systems:

  • IMS Explorer for Development 3.2.1 is the last release to include a Windows™ 32-bit install option.

The following changes apply to supported versions of IMS:

  • Effective July 1, 2017, currently supported IMS versions will no longer support the Large GEN (LGEN) process. Clients should use standard IMS SYSGEN to define their IMS systems.
  • The IMS Universal JDBC driver no longer supports the storing or retrieval of XML columns from an IMS database. Individual elements that can be found in an XML document may still be stored in an IMS database as separate columns.
  • The Common Client Interface versions of the IMS database resource adapters are no longer supported. That means JEE applications accessing IMS databases directly can no longer use the CCI programming model. The recommendation for any users of the IMS CCI database resource adapters, imsudbLocal.rar and imsudbXA.rar, is to switch to the equivalent IMS JDBC database resource adapters, imsudbJLocal.rar and imsudbJXA.rar.
Stabilization

Effective December 6, 2016, enhancements made in IMS will no longer include support for Extended Recovery Facility (XRF).

The following change applies to IMS Enterprise Suite for Distributed Systems:

  • No further enhancements will be delivered for IMS Data Provider for Microsoft™.NET V3.2.
Packaging changes
  • As of November 2016, IMS Mobile Feature Pack for z/OS Connect Enterprise Edition (also known as the IMS service provider for z/OS Connect Enterprise Edition) was available exclusively with IBM z/OS Connect Enterprise Edition (5655-CEE). IMS Mobile Feature Pack for z/OS Connect Enterprise Edition was formerly part of IMS Enterprise Suite for z/OS V3.2.1 (5655-TDA) under FMID HAHF324. For more information, refer to IBM Knowledge Center.
  • The Java Message Service (JMS) API (FMID JAHF322) will no longer be packaged with the IMS Enterprise Suite. Obtain the JMS API either through the Java EE installation or through the publicly available Maven repository.

Product positioning
Bottom rule

IMS is the premier IBM transaction and hierarchical database management system. Exclusive to the z/OS platform, IMS V15 QPP complements IBM DB2, IBM CICS, and IBM WebSphere servers for database and transaction management. Ongoing integration efforts mean that IMS can continue to enhance a multi-tier enterprise architecture.

IMS Database Manager uses a hierarchical model. DB2, Oracle, and desktop systems use a relational model. Each database model continues to evolve with unique roles to play. Mission-critical processing that requires unparalleled performance is best served by a hierarchical model. Analytics and business intelligence are best served by a relational model. Most Fortune 100 companies use both.

Operational data is stored in both hierarchical and relational form and can be accessed by business intelligence (BI) and analytics tools. IMS data can be accessed directly or propagated and replicated with relational data in support of BI. IBM offerings include standard application interfaces and drivers to access IMS and also other data. Both relational data and hierarchical IMS data can be efficiently accessed, together or independently, using the IMS Transaction Manager (IMS TM), CICS, and WebSphere servers.

IMS TM is one of three IBM application managers (along with CICS and WebSphere Application Server). Each provides unique capabilities:

  • IMS TM offers application management, data storage, and data access and applies strict rules for this access.
  • CICS offers a portfolio of transaction servers for both mainframe and distributed environments.
  • WebSphere applies simplified access rules, serving the web and integrating data that may be less defined.

IMS, IBM Rational®, and WebSphere products offer new levels of tooling and integration. Enterprise clients can select the Rational Developer for z Systems offering to maintain and enhance trusted IMS applications and develop web applications. Using the IMS Universal database drivers, WebSphere applications can access IMS database data directly by using industry-standard, Java database connectivity (JDBC) and SQL.

IMS V15 QPP provides new features to help support clients in their efforts to improve business efficiency and lower costs. Improvements in IMS V15 for database and systems administrators offer clients support for additional operational efficiencies and cost savings. Synergy with z Systems platform components can help reduce CPU use by utilizing:

  • The latest processor improvements
  • Larger amounts of memory
  • Solid-state disk
  • z/OS enhancements

Statement of good security practices
Bottom rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a lawful, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.

Sub-capacity charges for VWLC products

Sub-capacity charges for VWLC products are based on product LPAR utilization capacity. Product LPAR utilization capacity for a VWLC product is the highest number of MSUs utilized by the combined LPARs in which a VWLC product runs concurrently during a reporting period. The number of MSUs is based on the highest observed rolling 4-hour average utilization used by the combination of the relevant LPARs during the reporting period.

Sub-capacity charges terms and conditions

z Systems software charges at less than full machine capacity for eligible VWLC products apply when z/OS is running in z/Architecture® (64-bit) mode on an IBM z Systems 900, no other MVS™-based operating system is licensed to that server, and the required information is provided by the customer in accordance with the applicable terms.

Sub-capacity charges for a VWLC product is based on the utilization of the LPARs where/when the product executes. To obtain charges at less than full machine capacity for VWLC products, the customer is required to:

  • Sign and abide by the terms of the Attachment for IBM z Systems Workload License Charges - (Z125-6516).
  • Obtain the latest version of the Sub-Capacity Reporting Tool.
  • Install any VWLC product and IBM e(logo)server z Systems 900 Licensed Internal Code (LIC) service required for sub-capacity charging. Required service will be listed on the IBM z Systems Software Pricing website.
  • Collect SMF data as required by the Sub-Capacity Reporting Tool. Retain the collected SMF data for a period of not less than six months.
  • Use the IBM provided Sub-Capacity Reporting Tool to process the collected SMF data. The Sub-Capacity Report produced by the tool is used to determine required license capacity for the VWLC products. Required license capacity is determined based on the largest MSU value of a VWLC product running concurrently in all LPARs during the reporting period. IBM reserves the right to request the system data that supports these product-defined capacity values for a period of up to six months after the data was collected.
  • Provide an initial Sub-Capacity Report to begin to receive the benefits of less than full machine capacity charges. Sub-capacity charging will follow submission of a Sub-Capacity Report. There will be no retroactive application of sub-capacity charges.
  • Submit Sub-Capacity Reports monthly.
  • Submit Sub-Capacity Reports for all VWLC products with complete data for the entire reporting period to the email address and by the date specified in the current IBM z Systems Workload License Charges Exhibit (Z125-6324) and on the IBM z Systems Software Pricing website.

Sub-Capacity Reports that reflect a changed product defined capacity will be considered to be orders placed by the customer without further action on the customer's part, and IBM is authorized to make any resulting billing increase or decrease. To place an order for a new license or to discontinue licenses, move licenses between machines, report a hardware model upgrade, or enable or disable product features, the customer must contact IBM or their IBM Business Partner.

  • Configure the machine to send weekly Transmit System Availability Data (TSAD) to IBM via the IBM z Systems 900 Remote Support Facility (RSF). If the machine cannot connect via the RSF, provide this TSAD through an alternate means documented in the z/OS publication Planning for Workload License Charges on the IBM z Systems Software Pricing website.
