Description |
IBM MQ V8 for z/OS offers the most comprehensive and robust universal messaging solution for z/OS. It delivers the enterprise messaging you need, how you need it.
IBM MQ V8 for z/OS builds on the functions and capabilities that were added in previous releases of WebSphere MQ for z/OS.
The key features of IBM MQ V8 for z/OS can be grouped mainly into themes of exploitation of System z capabilities, improved performance and scalability, enhanced security, increased connectivity, and updates to standards and currency.
Exploitation of System z and z/OS capabilities
IBM MQ V8 for z/OS delivers the ability for the queue manager to exploit much larger quantities of storage to buffer access to private queues defined on pagesets. This will be of key interest in configurations and use cases that tend to build up large quantities of messages in queues, such as batch processing. Buffer pools may be defined in 64-bit storage, and additional buffer pools (maximum of 100) may be defined, allowing large numbers of messages to be cached in storage if required. These 64-bit buffer pools can use fixed pages to increase the performance of IBM MQ V8 for z/OS.
IBM MQ V8 for z/OS has made changes to widen the log Relative Byte Address. This change will avoid the need for users with large persistent message workloads to shut down the queue manager to allow the logs to be reset. This will allow increased uptime, and increase the overall productivity of the system.
The latest IBM zEnterprise® EC12 (zEC12) GA2 hardware and z/OS Version 2.1 enable IBM MQ for z/OS to have small MQ messages stored in Coupling Facility flash storage during a network or application outage. Combined with Shared Message Data Sets (SMDS) delivered in WebSphere MQ V7.1 for z/OS, Coupling Facility flash provides realistic storage for huge numbers of messages on shared queues.
Enhanced security
IBM MQ V8 for z/OS adds the ability to authenticate using an identity defined to the OS instance in which the MQ is running. This can be used in place of the existing MQ authentication mechanism. This new authentication feature will help reduce the administration of defining and removing users, especially across multiple systems.
An additional security enhancement in IBM MQ V8 for z/OS allows CHLAUTH definitions to use DNS (domain) host names instead of being forced to use IP addresses. Use of IP addresses continues to be best practice but users now have the choice of either approach, which can simplify matters when machines move IP addresses. This enhancement will enable the removal of user exits where these have been used to deliver this capability in the past.
Another security enhancement in IBM MQ V8 for z/OS is to enable more flexible security configuration of a queue manager. A queue manager can now have multiple certificates, each signed by a different certificate authority. This will now enable a single queue manager to communicate with different partners, each of whom uses a different certificate authority, simply by controlling this through channel definitions.
Additionally in IBM MQ V8.0 for z/OS updates have been made to security encryption support to add the SHA-2 cryptographic hash functions for increased security.
Enhancements to scalability
IBM MQ V8 for z/OS has made enhancements to how publish-subscribe can be deployed when using clustering. In this release it is now possible to assign roles to queue managers in a cluster to allow a subset of those queue managers in a cluster to act as a publish-subscribe hub within the cluster. This will assist in the propagation of publications which can then be sent to those "hubs" rather than propagating to all queue managers in the cluster, helping to avoid a high volume of messages flooding the cluster.
IBM MQ V8 for z/OS delivers a number of enhancements to performance that result in more efficient use of existing resources, which can help you meet the challenge of lowering the costs of your operation.
IBM MQ V8 for z/OS has been enhanced with read-ahead and write changes to deliver large increases in the data rates for data being moved across MQ by environments using IBM InfoSphere® Data Replication for low-latency replication of DB2® database systems to remote sites.
IBM MQ V8 also includes lock refinement and path length reduction in the logger. The performance and vertical scalability of MQ V8 is significantly better than in previous versions.
Updates to standards, currency, and administration
With the availability of IBM MQ V8 for z/OS, support has been added for JMS 2.0, including new messaging features and API changes. This enables businesses to move up to this new level of JMS as required.
IBM MQ V8 for z/OS also delivers enhancements to the mechanisms for measuring and monitoring use of key system resources. SMF is enhanced to allow the correlation of both MQ and CICS® statistics. Channel statistics also allow better monitoring and tuning of channel behavior.
Improved application isolation
A previous release of IBM MQ for z/OS included improved ability to scale for differing workload environments by the ability to configure multiple transmission queues in an IBM MQ clustered environment. This enables applications with different workloads and performance requirements to operate at their own rate without impacting other applications. With IBM MQ V8 for z/OS, this feature is now available for the first time for the z/OS offering.
Changes to client connectivity to IBM MQ for z/OS
In IBM MQ V8 for z/OS, there is a major change in the connection of MQ clients to IBM MQ for z/OS servers. The additional Client Attachment Feature required for WebSphere MQ V7 (5655-R36) is no longer required.
If you have WebSphere MQ V7.0.1 or V7.1.0 and do not have the Client Attachment Feature installed, you may connect MQ Clients by applying the PTFs in APAR PI13429 which enables client connections without installing the Client Attachment Feature.
For existing WebSphere MQ V7.0.1 and V7.1.0 deployments where the Client Attachment Feature is currently installed, the PTFs can be applied. However, effective June 1, 2014, the existing Client Attachment Feature will be free of charge, whether the PTFs are applied or not.
Accessibility by people with disabilities
A US Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) containing details on accessibility compliance can be requested at
Section 508 of the US Rehabilitation Act
IBM MQ for z/OS V8.0 is capable as of June 13, 2014, when used in accordance with associated IBM documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it.

Electronic Service Agent and the IBM Electronic Support web portal are dedicated to providing fast, exceptional support to IBM Systems customers. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tool is a no-additional-charge tool that proactively monitors and reports hardware events, such as system errors, performance issues, and inventory. The Electronic Service Agent tool can help you stay focused on your company's strategic business initiatives, save time, and spend less effort managing day-to-day IT maintenance issues. Servers enabled with this tool can be monitored remotely around the clock by IBM Support, all at no additional cost to you.
Now integrated into the base operating system of AIX V5.3, AIX V6.1, and AIX V7.1, Electronic Service Agent is designed to automatically and electronically report system failures and utilization issues to IBM, which can result in faster problem resolution and increased availability. System configuration and inventory information collected by the Electronic Service Agent tool also can be viewed on the secure Electronic Support web portal, and used to improve problem determination and resolution by you and the IBM support team. To access the tool main menu, simply type smitty esa_main, and select Configure Electronic Service Agent. In addition, ESA now includes a powerful web user interface, giving the administrator easy access to status, tool settings, problem information, and filters. For more information and documentation on how to configure and use Electronic Service Agent, refer to
The IBM Electronic Support portal is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. This portal enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems. The My Systems and Premium Search functions make it even easier for Electronic Service Agent tool-enabled customers to track system inventory and find pertinent fixes.
Benefits
Increased uptime: The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to enhance the Warranty or Maintenance Agreement by providing faster hardware error reporting and uploading system information to IBM Support. This can translate to less wasted time monitoring the symptoms, diagnosing the error, and manually calling IBM Support to open a problem record. Its 24x7 monitoring and reporting mean no more dependence on human intervention or off-hours customer personnel when errors are encountered in the middle of the night.
Security: The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to be secure in monitoring, reporting, and storing the data at IBM. The Electronic Service Agent tool securely transmits via either the Internet (HTTPS or VPN) or modem, and can be configured to communicate securely through gateways to provide you a single point of exit from your site. Communication is one way. Activating Electronic Service Agent does not enable IBM to call into a your system. System inventory information is stored in a secure database, which is protected behind IBM firewalls. It is viewable only by you and IBM. Your business applications or business data is never transmitted to IBM.
More accurate reporting: Because system information and error logs are automatically uploaded to the IBM Support Center in conjunction with the service request, you are not required to find and send system information, decreasing the risk of misreported or misdiagnosed errors. Once inside IBM, problem error data is run through a data knowledge management system and knowledge articles are appended to the problem record.
Customized support: Using the IBM ID entered during activation, you can view system and support information in the My Systems and Premium Search sections of the Electronic Support website at
My Systems provides valuable reports of installed hardware and software using information collected from the systems by Electronic Service Agent. Reports are available for any system associated with your IBM ID.
