Version 7.2 of InfoSphere® Optim offers the following enhancements to the native support for z/OS® data sources, when compared to Optim 7.1:
- Enhancements that apply across all Solutions:
- Optim 7.2 raises the limit for native z/OS archives and TDM extracts to four billion rows per table.
- More flexible relationships can be defined between data sources. The user must provide a user-written relationship exit that transforms the Optim defined key columns of one table to and from the corresponding key columns of the related table.
- During extract and archive processing, Optim maintains an internal record of the extracted keys. Lab and customer measurements have shown key memory utilization is now reduced up to 40% when the keys are processed in ascending or descending order.
- Column map transformations, including data masking, can be done to all array elements in fixed-length arrays in z/OS data sources.
- Toleration support for IMS V13.1.
- Toleration support for DB2® for z/OS V11.
- InfoSphere Optim Move for IMS/VSAM/SEQ:
- The native Optim z/OS Compare utility is enhanced to support data in IMS , VSAM, and z/OS Sequential files. The Compare utility is also enhanced to generate a Compare Report in an external, machine readable, source format, describing the differences between the two sources being compared.
- InfoSphere Optim Data Growth and Application Retirement Solutions
- InfoSphere Optim is enhanced to better support customers with Information Lifecycle Governance records retention and management requirements for legal, audit, and other reasons.
- When retrieving data from Optim archive files, Optim is enhanced to use indexes in more situations to improve performance.
- Optim archive collection security enhancements

Overview |
InfoSphere Optim Data Growth Solution enables you to archive historical transaction records and important related context from mission-critical database applications. Application data can be relocated to a more secure archive, thereby helping to streamline the production database to aid your efforts to reduce processing overhead. Archived information remains readily accessible. The Optim Data Growth Solution can help you improve application performance and support data-retention compliance programs and efforts to lower IT costs.
InfoSphere Optim Test Data Management Solution allows you to create realistic, right-sized test databases, edit data to force error and boundary conditions, and compare baseline data against successive test results to help you pinpoint application errors that could otherwise go undetected. By helping to streamline your test data management process, the Optim Test Data Management Solution can help you improve quality and accelerate application development by speeding iterative testing tasks.
InfoSphere Optim Test Data Management Solution - Data Masking Option is an optional, chargeable component that enables Optim Test Data Management solution customers to mask and transform sensitive test data as part of their efforts to avoid exposing critical business data. Optim masking can be done during Test Data Management, and also directly from user application programs, in SQL statements using Optim masking user-defined functions and from other IBM® products. Masking can be done consistently across all Optim supported platforms, maintaining the referential integrity of the data.
InfoSphere Optim Application Retirement makes retiring legacy and redundant applications easier by giving you the ability to archive data from decommissioned applications into an immutable archive file. It enables ongoing, application-independent access to the data for query and reporting. Thus, organizations can reduce costs and infrastructure complexity by safely retiring application code and data sources without having to move all data into new systems or keep retired systems available for access.

Description |
Enhancements applying across the Optim Solutions
With version 7.2, the following enhancements apply across all InfoSphere Optim Test Data Management, Data Privacy, Data Growth, and Application Retirement Solutions:
- Optim 7.2 raises the limit for native z/OS archives and TDM extracts to four billion rows per table compared to Optim 7.1.
- This enhancement raises external and internal limits to the number of rows extracted or archived by more than four times in order to support ever-growing InfoSphere Optim user data volume requirements.
- More flexible relationships can be defined between data sources. A user-written relationship exit is required to transform the Optim defined key columns of one table to and from the corresponding key columns of a related table.
- Application relationships between real customer data sources can be significantly more complex than the simple relational join column matching typically seen in a single schema in a relational database. Complex calculations may need to be done to one or more source key fields in the row or record in order to build the key fields necessary to locate a related target row or record in another data source. The InfoSphere Optim native z/OS platform supports these complex relationships by allowing full programmatic transformation of the source key fields into target key fields. The logic for transforming between the source and target keys must be provided to Optim in a user-written relationship exit.
- One approach that has been used to work around the challenge of complex relationships is the creation of a "helper table" or "join table." This table makes the relationship between the source and target key columns or fields explicit. However, managing a helper table and seeing to it that it is fully populated prior to Optim extract and archive operations can be a challenge. The new Optim relationship exit removes the need for a helper table, simplifying deployment of InfoSphere Optim solutions and reducing storage requirements.
- User data memory utilization can be reduced by up to 40% for Optim archive and TDM extracts that require Optim to maintain a temporary in-process record of the keys extracted. This enhancement takes effect when Optim processes the keys in ascending or descending order.
- Column map transformations, including data masking, can be done to all array elements in fixed-length arrays in z/OS data sources.
- Optim column transformations can now, in InfoSphere Optim 7.1 native z/OS platform, be specified against IMS , VSAM, and Sequential data elements in a fixed-length array. All array elements of the same name are transformed as specified by the user in the Optim Column Map.
- Toleration support for IMS V13.1.
- Toleration support means that applications that were supported by InfoSphere Optim when running against the previous IMS version (V12) will continue to be supported when running under the new version ( IMS V13).
- Toleration support for DB2 for z/OS V11
- Improved support for previous DB2 enhancements: ALTER TABLE, RENAME COLUMN, and ROW CHANGE TIMESTAMP.
InfoSphere Optim Test Data Management Solution for DB2 for z/OS and InfoSphere Optim Move for IMS/VSAM/SEQ
Secure application testing for quality and reliability has never been more important. InfoSphere Optim offers extensive test data management capabilities for creating "right-sized" fictionalized test databases that accurately reflect end-to-end business processes. It can help you minimize costly cloning processes and address defects early in the development process, when they are cheaper and easier to fix. Most importantly, the InfoSphere Optim Test Data Management Solution scales along with your development and testing requirements, across applications, databases, operating systems, and hardware platforms.
The InfoSphere Optim Test Data Management solution helps organizations by:
- Allowing you to create referentially intact, right-sized test databases
- Automating test result comparisons to identify hidden errors
- Refreshing and maintaining production-like test environments more easily
- Helping you to shorten iterative testing cycles to help accelerate time to market
The InfoSphere Optim Test Data Management solution supports heterogeneous enterprise environments, including custom applications and ERP solutions such as JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, PeopleSoft Enterprise, Siebel CRM, SAP applications, and more, and platforms including Microsoft Windows , UNIX/Linux, and IBM z/OS .
With version 7.2, the InfoSphere Optim Test Data Management Solution for DB2 for z/OS and InfoSphere Optim Move for IMS/VSAM/SEQ are enhanced as follows:
- The native InfoSphere Optim z/OS Compare utility is enhanced to support data in IMS , VSAM, and z/OS sequential files. This extends the sophisticated native Optim z/OS related Compare to these new data sources.
- Native z/OS Compare is also enhanced, for IMS/VSAM/SEQ data, to support nonkeyed and non-uniquely keyed segments or records. The comparison between non-uniquely keyed segments is based on matching a user-specified percentage of fields. The non-uniquely keyed segments can appear in any order under matching parents in order to be considered a match.
- The Report function of the Optim Compare facility has been enhanced to optionally produce a report in an External format, such as comma-separated values (CSV). Users can then provide the Compare report as input to another process or program (for example, to apply the reported changes to another set of data).
InfoSphere Optim Data Growth Solution, Application Retirement Solutions
InfoSphere Optim solutions address the data growth problem at the source by helping you manage your enterprise application data. InfoSphere Optim enables you to archive historical transaction records, storing them more securely and cost effectively while continuing to allow you ready access. With less data to sift through, InfoSphere Optim helps speed reporting and complete mission-critical business processes on time.
The InfoSphere Optim Data Growth solutions help organizations by:
- Helping efforts to reduce hardware, storage, and maintenance costs by allowing you to archive historical data from applications and systems, freeing valuable resources
- Helping optimize application performance levels by controlling ongoing database growth
- Allowing you to archive, manage, and retain application data according to business and compliance policies
- Allowing you to respond more quickly to audit and discovery requests with ready access to archived information
- Allowing you to centrally manage and control archiving across enterprise applications, including custom applications and packaged CRM/ERP solutions (such as JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, PeopleSoft Enterprise, Siebel CRM, and Amdocs CRM), databases ( DB2 , Informix® , Sybase, SQL Server, and so on), and platforms (including Microsoft Windows , UNIX/Linux, and IBM z/OS )
Version 7.2 enhancements:
- InfoSphere Optim is enhanced to support customers with Information Lifecycle Governance records retention and management requirements for legal, audit, and other reasons. Requirements supported include the ability to extract a subset from an archive and to hold subset data for a different duration than the original archive file from which it was extracted.
- When retrieving data from Optim archive files, InfoSphere Optim is enhanced to use indexes in more situations to improve performance.
- InfoSphere Optim archive collection security enhancements allow optional use of z/OS or Optim security.
Functions removed from InfoSphere Optim 7.2 native z/OS platform support:
- Support for CA Gen, formerly known as Cool Gen, is removed.
- The Optim commands to execute the DB2 PREPARE, EXPLAIN, and EXECUTE statements have been updated to tolerate the DB2 10 and 11 changes, only to provide toleration support for the existing Optim functionality. These commands will not be enhanced in future releases.

Statement of good security practices |
IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective. IBM does not warrant that systems and products are immune from the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.

IBM Electronic Services |
Electronic Service Agent and the IBM Electronic Support web portal are dedicated to providing fast, exceptional support to IBM Systems customers. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tool is a no-additional-charge tool that proactively monitors and reports hardware events, such as system errors, performance issues, and inventory. The Electronic Service Agent tool can help you stay focused on your company's strategic business initiatives, save time, and spend less effort managing day-to-day IT maintenance issues. Servers enabled with this tool can be monitored remotely around the clock by IBM Support all at no additional cost to you.
Now integrated into the base operating system of AIX® 5.3, AIX 6.1, and AIX 7.1, Electronic Service Agent is designed to automatically and electronically report system failures and utilization issues to IBM , which can result in faster problem resolution and increased availability. System configuration and inventory information collected by the Electronic Service Agent tool also can be viewed on the secure Electronic Support web portal, and used to improve problem determination and resolution by you and the IBM support team. To access the tool main menu, simply type "smitty esa_main", and select "Configure Electronic Service Agent ." In addition, ESA now includes a powerful Web user interface, giving the administrator easy access to status, tool settings, problem information, and filters. For more information and documentation on how to configure and use Electronic Service Agent , refer to
The IBM Electronic Support portal is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. This portal enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems. The My Systems and Premium Search functions make it even easier for Electronic Service Agent tool-enabled customers to track system inventory and find pertinent fixes.
Benefits
Increased uptime: The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to enhance the Warranty or Maintenance Agreement by providing faster hardware error reporting and uploading system information to IBM Support. This can translate to less wasted time monitoring the "symptoms," diagnosing the error, and manually calling IBM Support to open a problem record. Its 24 x 7 monitoring and reporting mean no more dependence on human intervention or off-hours customer personnel when errors are encountered in the middle of the night.
Security: The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to be secure in monitoring, reporting, and storing the data at IBM . The Electronic Service Agent tool securely transmits either via the Internet (HTTPS or VPN) or modem, and can be configured to communicate securely through gateways to provide customers a single point of exit from their site. Communication is one way. Activating Electronic Service Agent does not enable IBM to call into a customer's system. System inventory information is stored in a secure database, which is protected behind IBM firewalls. It is viewable only by the customer and IBM . The customer's business applications or business data is never transmitted to IBM .
More accurate reporting: Since system information and error logs are automatically uploaded to the IBM Support center in conjunction with the service request, customers are not required to find and send system information, decreasing the risk of misreported or misdiagnosed errors. Once inside IBM , problem error data is run through a data knowledge management system and knowledge articles are appended to the problem record.
Customized support: Using the IBM ID entered during activation, customers can view system and support information in the "My Systems" and "Premium Search" sections of the Electronic Support website at
My Systems provides valuable reports of installed hardware and software using information collected from the systems by Electronic Service Agent . Reports are available for any system associated with the customer's IBM ID. Premium Search combines the function of search and the value of Electronic Service Agent information, providing advanced search of the technical support knowledgebase. Using Premium Search and the Electronic Service Agent information that has been collected from your system, customers are able to see search results that apply specifically to their systems.

Subscription and Support
To receive voice technical support via telephone and future releases and versions at no additional charge, Subscription and Support must be ordered. The capacity of Subscription and Support (Value Units) must be the same as the capacity ordered for the product licenses.
To order, specify the Subscription and Support program number (PID) referenced above and the appropriate license or charge option.
IBM is also providing Subscription and Support for these products via a separately purchased offering under the terms of the IBM International Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance. This offering:
- Includes and extends the support services provided in the base support to include technical support via telephone.
- Entitles you to future releases and versions, at no additional charge. Note that you are not entitled to new products.
When Subscription and Support is ordered, the charges will automatically renew annually unless cancelled by you.
The combined effect of the IPLA license and the Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance gives you rights and support services comparable to those under the traditional ICA S/390® and System z license or its equivalent. To ensure that you continue to enjoy the level of support you are used to in the ICA business model, you must order both the license for the program and the support for the selected programs at the same Value Unit quantities.
