Overview |
Markets continue to change at a rapid pace. The expansion of the number of devices, such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, and so on as well as the growth of social media is presenting new and additional business opportunities for companies to create new channels with their customers and partners. To address these emerging opportunities, companies are opening up their data and services by exposing them as web APIs. A web API management solution is imperative to the success of externalizing the core services by providing easy assembly of new APIs, enabling security and different levels of service, providing management and insight to developers and business users, and socializing those APIs to developers, through communities and portals.
Today, IBM is announcing IBM API Management, a complete set of web API capabilities that can be deployed on-premise in an enterprise's data center. API Management integrates the most important features that are necessary to enable the three most significant players in the API economy: application developers, business owners, and IT personnel.
API Management provides capabilities for creating, proxying, assembling, securing, and scaling the web APIs. This solution also provides detailed analytics and operational metrics to the business owner and a customizable developer portal to socialize the APIs and manage applications that can be used by the developers. The developer portal is available with self-service registration and provides links to social communities.
API Management complements the Software as a Service (SaaS)-based web API capabilities offered with IBM WebSphere® Cast Iron® Live Web API Services, but as an on-premise solution. Also, with the on-premise solution, you can now use your existing WebSphere DataPower® Gateway Appliances running firmware Version 6.0 to act as the API gateway.
API Management key benefits
API Management is a complete solution that offers critical web API capabilities, including:
- Rapid API proxying and assembly: API assembly and proxying capabilities are provided to allow rapid creation of new APIs from existing business assets or cloud services through configuration. These API assembly capabilities are enabled by seamless integration with IBM WebSphere Cast Iron .
- Support for iterative development and API versioning: Changes can be made dynamically to an existing API implementation. Reactivating new versions of the API can be performed in a nondisruptive, highly available manner.
- Security and robust scalability capabilities: Access to APIs can be managed using a combination of API key and secret, and application users can be authenticated using HTTP basic authentication or OAuth 2.0. The solution provides built-in caching, quota management, and flood control, and can be configured to exploit existing DataPower appliances.
- Business analytics and operational metrics: Detailed business analytics and operational metrics are provided to help you analyze how your company's products are utilized and how well the APIs are performing and being used by developers.
- Ability to import existing APIs: The API provider can derive Representational State Transfer (REST)-based APIs from existing enterprise services or combinations of services such as SOAP-based web services or relational database sources.
- Nurturing of innovation: The developer community can help the innovative application developers, whether they are internal or external, to develop applications. This can expand a business's brand loyalty and open new channels of business to attract existing partners.
- Securely integrate with IBM DataPower Gateway: API Management requires and integrates with IBM DataPower Gateway Appliances, which contain robust security capabilities and provides access control, integration, and optimized delivery of APIs and other enterprise resources.

Charge metric
IBM API Management ( Passport Advantage )
Program Charge unit Program/service name number description IBM API Management 5725-L30 Per processor Value Unit (PVU)
Processor Value Unit (PVU)
PVU is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. The number of PVU entitlements required is based on the processor technology (defined within the PVU table by processor value, brand, type, and model number at the website below) and the number of processors made available to the program. IBM continues to define a processor, for the purpose of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip. A dual-core processor chip, for example, has two processor cores. The PVU table can be found at
Licensee can deploy the program using either full capacity licensing or virtualization capacity (sub-capacity) licensing according to the Passport Advantage Sub-Capacity Licensing Terms (refer to the web page below). If using Full Capacity licensing, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores1 in the physical hardware environment made available to or managed by the program, except for those servers from which the program has been permanently removed. If using Virtualization Capacity licensing, Licensee must obtain entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores made available to or managed by the program, as defined according to the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules at
- 1
- An activated processor core is a processor core that is available for use in a physical or virtual server, regardless of whether the capacity of the processor core can be or is limited through virtualization technologies, operating system commands, BIOS settings, or similar restrictions.
Notes :
- Some programs may require licenses for the program and what is being managed. In that case, the following applies. In addition to the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
- Some programs may be licensed on a managed basis only. In that case, the following applies. Instead of the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
- A few programs on an exception basis may be licensed on a referenced basis. In that case, the following applies. Rather than obtaining entitlements for the activated processor cores available to the program, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the environment made available to the referenced program as if the program itself were executing everywhere the referenced program was executing, independent of the basis on which the referenced program is licensed.

Statement of good security practices |
IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective. IBM does not warrant that systems and products are immune from the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
