Description |
CICS Transaction Gateway ( CICS TG), a market-leading enterprise connector from IBM , is production proven for over one thousand customers as a high-performing, security-rich, and scalable method of SOA access to CICS . It provides the following features:
- Delivers JEE standards-based access to CICS applications, while requiring minimal changes to CICS and usually no changes to existing CICS applications.
- Provides quick and easy connector access to CICS applications from a wide variety of environments, including Java , C, Microsoft .NET Framework-based, and COBOL runtimes.
- Enables the rapid deployment of CICS applications as fully scalable services in an enterprise-wide SOA.
- Allows the reuse of existing CICS applications as services in comprehensive and sophisticated JEE, and web services solutions hosted on powerful application servers such as WebSphere Application Server.
- Allows CICS applications to be integrated with cloud-based infrastructure, through products such as IBM Workload Deployer and IBM PureApplication System ( IBM Web Application pattern).
Running on IBM z/OS and Microsoft Windows , UNIX , and Linux operating systems, CICS TG not only provides connectivity to CICS for JEE-certified application servers, but also allows a wide range of application platforms to integrate with CICS including Java applications, servlets, applets, Microsoft .NET Framework-based applications, C, and COBOL applications.
CICS TG supports common programming frameworks to allow a wide variety of application platforms to securely integrate with CICS . While Java Enterprise Edition Connector Architecture (JCA) provides the highest qualities of service (connection pooling, transaction management) for applications deployed to a JEE application server, such as WebSphere Application Server, the CICS TG API for Microsoft .NET Framework-based applications, C, COBOL, and Java applications allow Microsoft Windows , UNIX , and Linux platforms to exploit the robust and scalable connectivity available through CICS TG.
In addition to CICS TG for z/OS and CICS TG for Multiplatforms, CICS TG Desktop Edition delivers low-cost desktop connectivity for CICS for Microsoft Windows , Linux , and UNIX operating systems. CICS TG Desktop Edition provides access from a single user workstation to the tried and trusted transactional capabilities of the entire family of CICS servers.
CICS TG for z/OS V9.0 provides significant enhancements over previous releases that help drive operational efficiencies while increasing service agility, offering a greater range of deployment options and interoperability.
Driving operational efficiencies
Increasing capacity, reduced complexity
CICS TG V9.0 brings cost-benefits through improved dynamic routing capabilities and greater vertical scaling capabilities.
Costs arise from management and maintenance of complex topologies, often due to multiple static configurations, each dedicated to a specific line-of-business. Transactional payload size is increasing in modern workloads, effectively lowering concurrent transaction capacity per Gateway daemon.
CICS TG V9.0 for z/OS exploits 64-bit IBM SDK Java Technology Edition Version 7, allowing greater vertical scaling for increased overall capacity per Gateway daemon. Exploitation of 64-bit storage allows CICS TG V9.0 to carry more work with larger payloads than ever before. This enables systems administrators to consolidate and simplify deployment topologies, while reducing system management overheads, or increasing existing capacity without increasing complexity.
CICS TG V9.0 eliminates a previous restriction in CICS TG whereby full metadata for XA transaction requests was not available to the CICS Request Exit. While this could be circumvented by providing specific Gateway daemon instances for separate lines-of-business, CICS TG V9.0 provides a much more efficient solution.
CICS TG V9.0 brings enhanced qualities of service for IPIC connections, allowing a System Administrator to influence request time-out at the CICS connection level. This facility is highly effective for mixed work loads where a rogue application might consume excessive system resources, and greatly assists z/OS installations migrating from EXCI to IPIC connections.
Deeper insight
CICS TG V9.0 brings end-to-end tracking of requests across the enterprise, and enhanced capabilities for new client applications.
Tracking a user request from its point of origin, through layers of enterprise middleware, empowers system administrators to realize round-trip performance optimization, and to quickly identify where to concentrate attention in problem determination. Together with WebSphere Application Server V8.5, CICS TG V9.0 propagates transaction context metadata to CICS tasks. This enables correlation of work flows from their end-user, right through to the system.
CICS TG V9.0 adds a new request monitor exit, RequestData, to the Gateway daemon. The new exit is driven immediately before a request is sent to CICS , but after any Dynamic Server Selection is applied. This allows visibility of routing decisions in high-availability topologies and is useful in the assistance of problem determination.
Since Version 7.1, CICS TG for z/OS can record statistics from the Gateway daemon to SMF. CICS TG for Multiplatforms V9.0 and CICS TG Desktop Edition V9.0 introduce a new facility to record statistics to the file system in XML format, providing historical statistical records "out of the box".
Increasing service agility
More flexibility
CICS TG V9.0 also brings greater flexibility for systems designers requiring secure connectivity. With an IPIC SSL connection, the Gateway daemon can be a trusted partner of CICS TS for z/OS in any deployment topology, allowing ECI applications to assert a pre-authenticated user ID. Prior to CICS TG V9.0 this was only possible when using local mode IPIC SSL connections, or when the z/OS Gateway daemon and CICS TS were co-located within the same Sysplex.
SSL connectivity is extended to IPIC connections in three-tier (or remote mode) topologies. This allows end-to-end secure connectivity for CICS TG applications, regardless of deployed topology. With CICS TG V9.0, end-to-end secure connectivity can be achieved for JEE, or pure Java-based applications.
Greater interoperability
CICS TG is built upon Java technology and CICS TG V9.0 uses the latest Java 7 runtime for the Gateway daemon. This maintains support for application runtime environments based on Java 5, Java 6, or Java 7.
CICS TG V9.0 adds 64-bit support for client applications using the ECI Version 2 and External Security Interface (ESI) Version 2 APIs. This allows application programmers to integrate access to CICS resources from within new 64-bit applications running in the distributed environment, alongside other 64-bit APIs.
CICS TG V9.0 adds asynchronous call support for ECI Version 2 applications. This eliminates the need for "home-grown", asynchronous call frameworks.

Value Unit-based pricing
Value Unit pricing for eligible IBM System z IBM International Program License Agreement (IPLA) programs enables a lower cost of incremental growth and enterprise aggregation. Each System z IPLA product with Value Unit pricing has a single price per Value Unit and a conversion matrix, called Value Unit Exhibit, for converting from some designated measurement to Value Units. Most commonly, Millions of Service Units (MSUs) is the measurement designated by IBM to be converted to Value Units. Some other measurements are engines or messages. Since MSUs are the most common measurement, that measurement will be used for the remainder of this description.
Value Unit pricing offers price benefits for you. For each System z IPLA program with Value Unit pricing, the quantity of that program needed to satisfy applicable IBM terms and conditions is referred to as the required license capacity . Each of the various Value Unit Exhibits stipulate that the larger your required license capacity, the fewer Value Units per MSU you will need. Value Unit Exhibits are uniquely identified by a three digit code and referred to using the nomenclature VUExxx, where xxx is the three digit code.
Subsequent acquisitions of Value Unit priced programs offer additional price benefits. The quantity of each System z IPLA program that you have acquired is referred to as entitled license capacity. If you wish to grow your entitled license capacity for a System z IPLA program, the calculation to determine additional needed Value Units is based upon the number of Value Units already acquired.
For each System z IPLA program with Value Unit pricing, you should:
- Determine the required license capacity, in MSUs
- Aggregate the MSUs across the enterprise
- Convert the total MSUs to Value Units, using the applicable Value Unit Exhibit
- Multiply the price per Value Unit by the total number of Value Units to determine the total cost
To simplify conversion from the designated measurement to Value Units or vice-versa, use the Value Unit Converter Tool. For additional information or to obtain a copy of the Value Unit Converter Tool, visit the Value Unit Converter Tool website at
Note that Value Units of a given product cannot be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Units of another product.
To determine the required license capacity for the System z IPLA program you selected, refer to the Terms and conditions section.

Product positioning |
An increasingly competitive, economic environment drives many businesses to transform their existing CICS applications using SOA and Web 2.0 strategies. The same pressures also force IT managers, CICS system programmers, and application developers to develop applications and operate systems at peak level while maintaining service level commitments and meeting regulatory and corporate governance requirements.
To help support this demanding environment, CICS TG provides a production-proven, high-performing, security-rich and scalable JEE connector that requires minimal changes to CICS systems and usually no changes to existing CICS applications. CICS TG allows you to rapidly service-enable your CICS applications by connecting them to new environments, such as the enterprise service bus (ESB) at the heart of your SOA.
To enable comprehensive, composite application-serving infrastructures, CICS TG provides connectivity from WebSphere SOA foundation servers to CICS TS. The strategic interface within CICS TG that enables this is the JCA adapter, a component of the JEE specification.
JCA is a popular method of JEE connectivity because of its ease of implementation and high qualities of service. It delivers managed qualities of service for connections, transactions and security and is transparent to application developers.
In a managed environment, like that of WebSphere Application Server system, contracts enable these management capabilities. They help to make the JCA a robust solution for integrating COMMAREA or container-based CICS applications with JEE applications running in WebSphere Application Server.
Tightly-coupled connectivity solutions such as JCA, along with other JEE standard services, such as Java Message Service (JMS) and Java Database Connectivity (JDBC), can coexist with loosely-coupled web services to take advantage of the agility of an SOA.
The term tightly-coupled means that there is a predetermined client-server or consumer-publisher relationship that is not easy to change. In such a case, for a given client, there is typically only one specific server with technical interaction that is fault-sensitive. Therefore, the client has to handle protocol-related errors. Loosely-coupled systems are often designed to work on a problem partitioned around data flow boundaries in which workers solve only one part of a larger problem, the context of which is not necessarily known. Often, such systems are inherently extensible by means of adding more workers. The choice among web services and JCA implementations for integration is based on multiple criteria. By mapping to the requirements for particular solutions and by prioritizing these requirements, architects can choose the right implementation for their particular case.
Choosing the right deployment platform for your gateway is important. CICS TG V9.0 currently supports the following platforms:
- IBM z/OS
- IBM AIX
- Linux on Intel , POWER or System z
- Microsoft Windows
- Oracle Solaris on the SPARC platform
- HP-UX on 64-bit HP Itanium
Connectivity is provided on these platforms from all supported WebSphere Application Server environments to all supported CICS servers. The qualities of service of CICS TG are highest when deploying on the IBM z/OS platform.
IBM TXSeries for Multiplatforms is a distributed CICS Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) environment for business-critical applications written in enterprise programming languages. CICS TG is the strategic connector between TXSeries CICS servers and WebSphere Application Servers. TXSeries is the ideal deployment environment for high-performance, distributed transactional applications that integrate well into your mixed-language, multiplatform SOA solution. TXSeries for Multiplatforms V7.1 extends and enhances the next generation of distributed CICS across a number of platforms. For further details on TXSeries for Multiplatforms V7.1, refer to its announcement in the Reference information section.

CICS Transaction Gateway includes enhancements in the areas of scalability, high availability, monitoring, and interoperability.
Scalability
CICS Transaction Gateway can operate as a 31-bit or 64-bit address space. This means that the Gateway daemon can process workloads with larger channels and can use more IPIC connections without exhausting address space resources.
Local mode IPIC connections were previously limited to a maximum of 100 sessions. CICS Transaction Gateway V9.0 enables local mode IPIC connections to exploit the maximum session limit imposed by the connected CICS server.
High availability
Client application IP addresses are available for use in CICS request exits. The IP address information can be used in your CICS request exit routing decisions.
Monitoring
Channel and container information is available to Java request monitoring exits for ECI requests that have an associated channel.
The new request monitoring exit, RequestDetails, is provided for FlowTopology=Gateway. The exit is triggered immediately before a request is sent to CICS from the Gateway daemon.
New statistic SE_C31MAX assists in the tuning of 31-bit REGION and heap storage for the Gateway daemon on z/OS .
Interoperability
All ECI V2 and ESI V2 functions can be used by 64-bit applications as well as by 32-bit applications.
ECI V2 is enhanced with the addition of asynchronous call support, from both 32-bit and 64-bit applications, and the removal of threading restrictions for synchronous call support.
Stabilization of support and discontinued functions
The ecigenericreplies, msgqualvalidation , and uowvalidation parameters are no longer supported.

Processor Value Unit (PVU)
PVU is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. The number of PVU entitlements required is based on the processor technology (defined within the PVU table by processor value, brand, type, and model number at the website below) and the number of processors made available to the program. IBM continues to define a processor, for the purpose of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip. A dual-core processor chip, for example, has two processor cores. The PVU table can be found at
Licensee can deploy the program using either full capacity licensing or virtualization capacity (sub-capacity) licensing according to the Passport Advantage Sub-Capacity Licensing Terms (refer to the web page below). If using Full Capacity licensing, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores* in the physical hardware environment made available to or managed by the Program, except for those servers from which the Program has been permanently removed. If using Virtualization Capacity licensing, Licensee must obtain entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores made available to or managed by the Program, as defined according to the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules at
* An activated processor core is a processor core that is available for use in a physical or virtual server, regardless of whether the capacity of the processor core can be or is limited through virtualization technologies, operating system commands, BIOS settings, or similar restrictions.
Notes
- Some programs may require licenses for the program and what is being managed. In that case, the following applies. In addition to the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
- Some programs may be licensed on a managed basis only. In that case, the following applies. Instead of the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
- A few programs on an exception basis may be licensed on a referenced basis. In that case, the following applies. Rather than obtaining entitlements for the activated processor cores available to the program, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the environment made available to the referenced program as if the program itself were executing everywhere the referenced program was executing, independent of the basis on which the referenced program is licensed.

Processor Value Unit (PVU) sub-capacity licensing
The IBM z/OS software product in this announcement is eligible for sub-capacity licensing. Customers must accept the terms of the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement Attachment for Sub-Capacity Licensing Terms (Attachment), and must obtain PVU Proofs of Entitlement (PoEs) for the maximum processor core capacity available to an eligible sub-capacity product when deployed in an eligible virtualization environment. This is also referred to as sub-capacity or virtualization capacity licensing.
Customers must use the IBM License Metric Tool unless they meet the exceptions described in the Attachment.

For more information on the Value Unit Exhibit for the System z IPLA program you selected, refer to the Ordering information section.
Program Parent, number Program name Terms if applicable 5655-Y20 CICS TG for z/OS V9.0 Reference-based 5655-M15 5655-S97 5655-Y04
Full-capacity mainframes
In cases where full-capacity is applicable, the following terms apply.
Execution-based, z/OS-based, full-machine-based: The required capacity of a System z IPLA program with these terms equals the MSU-rated capacity of the machines where the System z IPLA program executes.
For more information on mainframe MSU-rated capacities, visit
Reference-based: The required license capacity of a System z IPLA program with these terms equals the license capacity of the applicable monthly license charge (MLC) program. This MLC program is called the parent program.
Sub-capacity mainframes
In cases where sub-capacity is applicable, the following terms apply.
Execution-based: The required capacity of a System z IPLA sub-capacity program with these terms equals the capacity of the LPARs where the System z IPLA program executes.
IBM z/OS-based: The required license capacity of a System z IPLA program with these terms equals the license capacity of z/OS on the machines where the System z IPLA program executes.
Reference-based: The required license capacity of a System z IPLA program with these terms equals the license capacity of the applicable monthly license charge (MLC) program. This MLC program is called the parent program.
Full-machine-based: The required license capacity of a System z IPLA program with full machine based terms equals the MSU-rated capacity of the machines where the System z IPLA program executes.
For more information on mainframe MSU-rated capacities, refer to The IBM System z Machines Exhibit, (Z125-3901), or visit the Mainframes section of the System z Exhibits website at
For additional information for products with reference-based terms, System z IPLA sub-capacity programs with reference-based terms adds value to the parent program across the environment, regardless of where in the environment the System z IPLA program executes.
An environment is defined as either a single or stand-alone machine or a qualified Parallel Sysplex® . You may have one or more different environments across the enterprise. To determine the required license capacity for each System z IPLA program with referenced-based terms, each environment should be assessed separately.
When a System z IPLA sub-capacity program with reference-based terms is used in a qualified Parallel Sysplex environment, the required license capacity of the System z IPLA program must equal with the license capacity of the parent program across the Parallel Sysplex . Qualified Parallel Sysplex refers to one where MLC pricing is aggregated across the sysplex.
Sub-capacity eligibility
To be eligible for sub-capacity charging on select System z IPLA programs, you must first implement and comply with all terms of either sub-capacity Workload License Charges (WLC) or sub-capacity Entry Workload License Charges (EWLC). To implement sub-capacity WLC or EWLC, a machine must be System z (or equivalent). On that machine:
- All instances of the OS/390® operating system must be migrated to the z/OS operating systems.
- Any licenses for the OS/390 operating system must be discontinued.
- All instances of the z/OS operating systems must be running in z/Architecture® (64-bit) mode.
For that machine, you must create and submit a Sub-Capacity Report to IBM each month. Sub-Capacity Reports must be generated using the Sub-Capacity Reporting Tool (SCRT). For additional information or to obtain a copy of SCRT, visit the System z Software Pricing website, at
You must comply with all of the terms of the WLC or EWLC offering, whichever is applicable:
- The complete terms and conditions of sub-capacity WLC are defined in the IBM Customer Agreement - Attachment for System z Workload License Charges (Z125-6516).

Statement of good security practices |
IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered destroyed or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective. IBM does not warrant that systems and products are immune from the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.

IBM Electronic Services |
IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.
The Electronic Services news page is a single internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM . Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
