The Rational Developer for System z V8.5 family of products enables companies to accelerate time to market with higher quality solutions while reducing the costs of maintenance over an application's lifetime.
The Rational Developer for System z family uses industry standards to simplify the development of rich client interfaces, web user interfaces, traditional terminal interfaces, and back-end, business logic deployable to CICS® , IMS™ , DB2® , Batch, z/OS UNIX™ , AIX® , Linux™ for System z , Linux on Power® , and WebSphere® transactional environments. The Rational Developer for System z family integrates with existing System z development processes, including problem determination and System z source management systems.

- Rational Developer for zEnterprise™ builds on Rational Developer for System z , offering a combination of tools for exploiting traditional System z environments as well as for developing applications for zBX blades running Linux and AIX operating systems.

Rational Developer for System z , V8.5 offers close integration to a number of the industry's source code management offerings, including Rational Team Concert . Working with Rational Team Concert , Rational Developer for System z , V8.5 has improved its remote project support and recovery handling.
Rational Developer for System z , V8.5 features improved application structural and quality analysis for developers to enhance their ability to deliver high-quality COBOL and PL/I applications in a timely fashion that conform to in-house programming guidelines. Emulating the jUnit techniques available to Java programmers, Rational Developer for System z , V8.5 introduces z/OS Automated Unit Test framework for COBOL and PL/I applications.
The Rational Developer for System z team recognizes the importance of listening and responding to client feedback, needs, and concerns. Rational Developer for System z , V8.5 includes numerous changes and improvements that stem directly from client interactions, bringing the value of their insight to the broader client community.
When Rational Developer for System z is used with the IBM Software Development Platform, developers can extend the environment to meet a broad range of requirements, including change management and testing functions, usable directly from the Rational Developer for System z desktop.
The Rational Developer for System z development environment can also be combined with the Rational Development and Test Environment for System z , based on the IBM System z Personal Development Tool. The Development and Test environment is designed to enable a virtual System z architecture environment that allows mainframe operating systems, middleware, and software to run unaltered on Intel™ and Intel-compatible platforms such as a Lenovo laptop or IBM System x® server. No System z mainframe hardware is needed.
To facilitate Eclipse integration with the Rational V8.5 releases of Rational Developer for System z , IBM is also provides Version 8.5 releases for Rational Business Developer and Host Access Transformation Services (HATS).
Rational Business Developer V8.5 is an integrated development environment for EGL, a programming technology designed to simplify multiplatform application development. With EGL, developers can focus more on implementing the needs of the business and less on the intricacies of underlying frameworks and middleware. EGL provides a common programming language and model across all parts of an application, complements popular languages like Java , JavaScript™ , and COBOL, and deploys to popular platforms such as WebSphere Application Server, IBM Power Systems™ , and CICS .
Some features included in Rational Business Developer V8.5 are:
- Support for WebSphere Application Server versions V8.0 and V8.5
- Support for Apache Tomcat version V7.0
- Support for Dojo 1.7
- Support for 64-bit processors on supported Linux platforms
- Compatibility with Rational Application Developer V8.5
- Compatibility with Rational Team Concert version V4.0
With HATS, you can rapidly transform the end user experience of your 3270 applications running on IBM System z and your 5250 applications running on IBM i without modifying those applications. Using the HATS rules-based transformation technology, the screens of your applications can be rendered with intuitive user interfaces. You can further improve the appearance, usability, and navigation of your applications by creating screen transformations and skip-screen macros.

The Rational Developer for System z , V8.5 offerings are the follow-on replacement products for WebSphere Studio Enterprise Developer V5; WebSphere Developer for zSeries® V6; WebSphere Developer for System z , V7.0; Rational Developer for System z , V7.1; Rational Developer for System z , V7.5; Rational Developer for System z , V7.6; and Rational Developer for System z , V8.0.x.

The Rational Developer for System z family includes these three offerings:
- Rational Developer for System z , V8.5: Rational Developer for System z helps make traditional mainframe development and integrated mixed workload faster and more efficient.
- Rational Developer for System z enables development of COBOL, PL/I, C++, assembler, and Java applications for batch, CICS , IMS , and DB2 and supports service-oriented architecture (SOA) and Web service creation.
- Rational Developer for zEnterprise , V8.5: Rational Developer for zEnterprise helps make traditional mainframe development, web development, and integrated mixed workload or composite development faster and more efficient even across hardware platforms. Rational Developer for zEnterprise enables development of COBOL, PL/I, C++, assembler, EGL, Java , or Java Enterprise Edition applications for z/OS batch, CICS , IMS , WebSphere , and DB2 and supports SOA and web service creation spanning z/OS , Linux , and AIX environments.
Existing clients for Rational Developer for System z with EGL will have their entitlements moved to the new Rational Developer for System z offering and given equivalent entitlement for Rational Business Developer.
Existing clients for Rational Developer for System z with Java will have their entitlements moved to the Rational Developer for zEnterprise offering.
These migrations ensure the clients have access to their current capabilities while minimizing the impact to their Subscription and Support costs. The Subscription and Support charges will not change until renewal time.
System z application development tools
Development tools for designing, creating, and maintaining mainframe applications
System z integrated development environment: Provides an interactive, workstation-based environment where you can connect to a mainframe and develop mainframe-based applications in COBOL, PL/I, Assembler, C/C++, and Java , as well as workstation-based applications in COBOL, PL/I, and Java . With Rational Developer zEnterprise , you can connect to other environments, such as AIX and Linux and develop workstation-based applications in COBOL, C, C++, and Java .
V8.5 offers a wide-reaching set of enhancements and new capabilities for the developer.
Program analysis
- Control flow diagrams for COBOL programs, a graphical representation of the program flow with links to the underlying source, zoom in/out capability, print/export the diagram to a bitmap (BMP).
- Identify and highlight potential unreachable code using program scope static analysis.
- Show data element table showing all the data elements for a given COBOL program being edited and its dependent copy books as well as for a given PL/I program being edited and its dependent include files.
- Open called programs from within COBOL and PL/I source.
- Show call Hierarchy for PL/I showing caller and callee relationships of PL/I procedures in a hierarchical tree view.

- Code review: Inspects your code for compliance with rules and best practices. Code review highlights potential problems and recommends code changes for improved quality.
Version 8.5 includes additional predefined rules and templates for COBOL applications and a framework for the client to add their own COBOL rules. Version 8.5 also includes a set of predefined code rules and templates for PL/I applications.
- Line-level code coverage: Provides tools to measure and report on test coverage of an application, indicating what source code lines were tested and which lines remain to be tested.
- System z Code Generators: Provides design tools and wizards that allow you to rapidly create System z application code skeleton and logic from UML models or user-provided input.
- z/OS Automated Unit Testing Framework (zUnit, new with Version 8.5): Provides a code-driven unit testing framework for Enterprise COBOL and PL/I. zUnit provides an automated solution for executing and verifying Enterprise COBOL and PL/I unit test cases that are written using the zUnit framework.
- COBOL and PL/I for Windows™ : Enables creation of Windows binaries for COBOL and PL/I programs for use in unit testing applications locally with Windows shell scripts. This feature is no longer being enhanced. It was not included with the Rational Developer for System z offering and will be removed in a future version of the Rational Developer for zEnterprise offering. This feature is not required for local syntax check; the local syntax check capability is enabled via selection of the System z Integrated Development Environment feature.
Team and repository support
Provide tools for accessing and interacting with source control management systems as well as collaborative lifecycle management tools.
- SCLM Developer Toolkit: Provides tools to access and work with source code managed by Software Configuration and Library Manager (SCLM).
- Rational ClearCase® SCM Adapter: Provides the Rational ClearCase SCM and ClearCase MVFS plug-ins, which enable versioning of software artifacts in ClearCase versioned object bases (VOBs) using snapshot views and dynamic views when ClearCase VOB and view servers are also installed.
- CA Endevor Software Change Manager: Provides tools to access and work with CA Endevor Software Change Manager managed source code.
CICS Tools
Tools specifically for developers working with CICS Transaction Server ( CICS TS), including the IBM CICS Explorer®
- Enterprise Service Tools for CICS including Service Component Architecture: Provide an integrated set of tools that support modern application architectures and the transformation and reuse of existing CICS application processes. The tools support generation of web service descriptions and service flow processing artifacts directly to a z/OS system, including CICS TS and the CICS Service Flow Runtime. Enterprise Service Tools quickly enable the move towards service-oriented architecture (SOA).
- BMS Screen Designer: Enables you to visually create and modify Basic Mapping Support (BMS) map sets. It is designed for CICS developers who are familiar with terminal-based tools, for example, SDF II or GUI-based tools, such as the BMS editor included with VA COBOL.
- CICS Code Generators: Provides design tools and wizards that allow you to rapidly create CICS Transaction Server application code skeleton and logic from UML models or user-provided input, for example, using UML models or database schema definitions to generate CICS transactions that provide Create, Read, Update, and Delete interfaces to DB2 tables.
Note: With the inclusion of an integrated copy of the CICS Explorer, IBM has deprecated the Application Deployment Manager (ADM) capabilities in the Rational Developer for System z Integrated Development Environment products as of Version 8.5. The CICS Explorer allows you to query, define, and install needed CICS resources, services, and SCA bundles. The combination of CICS Explorer and IBM Rational Developer for System z simplifies the CICS development process by removing or automating several manual steps in the service deployment and testing cycle. The developer no longer has to return to the character-based interface (green screen) or work with CICS systems programmers via manual interaction to define many of the CICS application resources they need for testing application changes. The deprecated ADM capabilities continue to be supported for defect fixes and support questions, but no new enhancements, feature updates, oradditional platform support are planned.
IMS tools
Tools specifically for developers working with IMS Transaction Manager and Database (DB).
- Enterprise Service tools for IMS : Provide an integrated set of tools that support modern application architectures and the transformation and reuse of existing IMS application processes. The tools support generation of web service descriptions and processing artifacts directly to a z/OS system, including the IMS SOAP Gateway and IMS info 2.0 applications. Enterprise Service Tools quickly enable the move towards an SOA.
- MFS screen designer: Enables you to create and modify Message Format Service (MFS) message and format files. Many Information Management System ( IMS ) programs are based on MFS, which is an IMS Transaction Manager environment facility that formats messages to and from terminal devices.
- IMS Code Generators: Provides code snippets that allow you to rapidly add common programming objects to IMS application code.
DB2 tools
Tools specifically for developers working with DB2 databases, stored procedures, and applications.
- Data tools: Provides relational database tools to work with tables, table views, and filters. With these tools, you can create physical database models by means of reverse engineering database tables or using DDL scripts. You can also use the tools to create SQL statements, DB2 routines (such as stored procedures and user-defined functions), and several types of files, including SQLJ, SQL DDL, and XML files.
- System z stored procedures: Enables you to create, test, and deploy DB2 stored procedures written in COBOL, PL/I, Java , or SQL directly to a z/OS system.
Problem determination tool integration

- System z debugger: Provides a workstation-based interface to IBM Debug Tool, facilitating remote debug sessions with applications executing on a z/OS system.

- Fault Analyzer: Enables you to work with fault entries created by IBM Fault Analyzer for z/OS during real-time analysis of abending programs.

Extensibility features
Enables the adaptation and extension of the IBM Software Delivery Platform with custom-designed tools to match your own architectures, standards, and practices. These custom assets can enhance consistency and quality while reducing manual tasks.
- Common Access Repository Manager (CARMA): Provides a unified interface and set of services for accessing System z-based source control management tools. CARMA also provides a generic GUI client that can be used as a framework for accessing and interfacing with custom source control management systems.
- Plug-in Development Environment (PDE): Provides tools for creating, developing, testing, debugging, and deploying Eclipse plug-ins, which can be used to extend the IBM Software Delivery Platform Eclipse environment.
- C and C++ Development Tools for AIX : Provides tools to edit, compile, and debug C/C++ programs for AIX .
- COBOL Development Tools for AIX : Provides tools to edit, compile, and debug COBOL programs for AIX .
- C and C++ Development Tools for Linux : Provides tools to edit, compile, and debug C/C++ programs for Linux .

Authorized User
Authorized User is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. An Authorized User is a unique person who is given access to the program. The program may be installed on any number of computers or servers and each Authorized User may have simultaneous access to any number of instances of the program at one time. Licensee must obtain separate, dedicated entitlements for each Authorized User accessing the program in any manner directly or indirectly (for example, via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means. An entitlement for an Authorized User is unique to that Authorized User an may not be shared, nor may it be reassigned other than for the permanent transfer of the Authorized User entitlement to another person.
Note: Some programs may be licensed where devices are considered users. In that case, the following applies. Any computing device that requests the execution of or receives for execution a set of commands, procedures, or applications from the program or that is otherwise managed by the program is considered a separate user of the program and requires an entitlement as if that device were a person.
Floating User
Floating User is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. A Floating User is a person who is accessing the program at any particular point in time. An Install is an installed copy of the program on a physical or virtual disk made available to be executed on a computer. The program may be installed on any number of computers or servers, but if the Floating User simultaneously accesses more than one Install of the program, the Floating User requires a separate entitlement for each such Install. Licensee must obtain separate entitlements for each Floating User simultaneously accessing the program on each Install in any manner directly or indirectly (for example: via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means.

The information provided in this announcement letter is for reference and convenience purposes only. The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement, and the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.
Licensing
IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use.
Part number products only, offered outside of Passport Advantage , where applicable, are license only and do not include Software Maintenance.
This software license includes Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance).

Limited warranty
IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.
IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. For further information, consult the IBM Software Support Handbook found at
IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).
Program technical support
Technical support of a program product version or release will be available for a minimum of three years from the general availability date, as long as your Software Maintenance is in effect. This technical support allows you to obtain assistance (via telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product. Software Maintenance also provides you with access to updates (modifications or fixes), releases, and versions of the program. You will be notified, via announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with 12 months' notice. If you require additional technical support from IBM , including an extension of support beyond the discontinuance date, contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. This extension may be available for a fee.

For clarification, note that if for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.
For clarification, note that for programs acquired under the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement, this term applies only to your first acquisition of the program.

Usage restriction
Yes. The Rational Developer for System z , V8.5 media package contains complimentary bundled offerings. Usage of and service support for these bundled offerings is subject to restrictions. These restrictions are described in the License Information documents. In order to use any of the bundled offerings outside of the usage restrictions and to receive full service support, you must obtain a separate license for the offering.
The Technology Previews are unwarranted software provided "as is" for evaluation and feedback purposes only. These Technology Previews are not covered under the same licensing, warranty, program technical support, and software maintenance as the Rational Developer for System z product. For each Technology Preview, there is a separate license with unique terms and conditions covering licensing, warranty, program technical support, and software maintenance. See the license for the Technology Preview you want to evaluate to understand the terms and conditions that apply to your use of that software.
Software Subscription and Support applies
Yes. Software Subscription and Support is included with licenses purchased through Passport Advantage and Passport Advantage Express . Product upgrades and technical support are provided by the Software Subscription and Support offering as described in the Agreements. Product upgrades provide the latest versions and releases to entitled software and Technical Support provides voice and electronic access to IBM support organizations, worldwide.
IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support with each program license acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available.
While your Software Subscription and Support is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Handbook at
Software Subscription and Support does not include assistance for the design and development of applications, your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under the applicable agreements.
