Description |
Help prevent problems before they impact the business
Poor performance has a negative consequence on the business. These consequences are:
- High capital expenditures - Poor performance management results in increased capital expenditures for server CPUs, memory, and disk storage systems.
- Decreased productivity - Business users lose productivity because systems are not available. IT staff is consumed with tedious manual processes to isolate, diagnose, and resolve performance problems.
- Revenue loss - Missed service level agreements result in revenue loss due to unresponsive databases and applications.
When workloads spike or new applications change the workload mix or configuration changes limit resources, you want to know before application slowdowns impact business performance. IBM InfoSphere Optim Performance Manager helps to give database administrators (DBAs) early warning of potential bottlenecks or declining performance trends. Streamlined workflow assists users in moving from problem isolation to diagnosis to resolution.
Organizations wanting to take a more proactive approach to performance management can use InfoSphere Optim Performance Manager to configure DB2 Workload Manager so that resources are allocated according to business priorities and ad hoc queries are not allowed to monopolize system resources.
Moreover, the performance history and integrated reporting enable users to analyze trends for capacity planning or optimize high cost SQL to stay ahead of the performance curve. Integration with other Optim tools, such as Data Studio and InfoSphere Optim Query Workload Tuner, helps developers and DBAs alike to identify query hot spots and long running queries, tune queries like an expert, and validate the tuning results.
Save hours of staff time and stress
Many times problem isolation is a complex, multi-day, multi-person effort where each administrator brings their logs and traces, and the team tries to correlate the metrics to identify the source of the problem. Such time not only represents lost productivity by the staff, but more importantly can represent millions of dollars in lost revenue for customer facing applications. It is critical to be able to isolate and resolve problems quickly. InfoSphere Optim Performance Manager provides unique database monitoring capability that tracks transaction execution across the layers of the application stack to make it apparent where transactions are spending time, that is, within the application, the application server, the database driver, the network, or the database server. Now DBAs or other IT staff can visualize how much time is being spent in the application, application server, client driver, network, and database server and route the problem to the appropriate team for resolution.
Clarifying problem isolation is particularly useful for busy DBAs who are often left owning the problem until they can prove it is not a database issue. Now they are armed with the information to route the problem immediately. Or when the database is the issue, they can visualize where the transaction is spending time within the database, down to the component level, to accelerate response. They can immediately see how much time the workload is spending in statement compilation, lock wait, Workload Manager queue, sorting, and so on.
Align monitoring objectives with business objectives
Monitoring database server metrics, such as buffer pool hit ratio and locking contention, are key to fine tuning database performance, but they may not give the DBA early warning of degrading end user experience, such as application response time. Nor do they help the DBA distinguish performance characteristics of high priority applications, transactions, or users. InfoSphere Optim Performance Manager lets DBAs configure and track adherence to response time objectives for key workloads to align their work with business priorities.
InfoSphere Optim Performance Manager offerings help organizations to resolve emergent database problems before they impact the business. They help organizations save countless hours in problem isolation and diagnosis to resolve potential problems quickly. And they help staff align their activities according to business priorities.
Key architectural changes
Central to the capabilities of V5.1 are key internal enhancements to how InfoSphere Optim Performance Manager accesses DB2 monitoring data and stores its data in the repository. When monitoring DB2 9.7, or later databases, InfoSphere Optim Performance Manager uses state-of-the-art DB2 in-memory metrics for accessing the majority of the performance data. This provides a lighter weight monitoring infrastructure than the snapshot monitoring still used on DB2 9.1 and 9.5 databases.
In addition, movement to the in-memory metrics has facilitated real-time data collection and sub-minute refreshes for live problem diagnosis.
When monitoring DB2 9.7, or later databases, InfoSphere Optim Performance Manager also uses a more efficient schema for storing performance data in the repository. This schema has been optimized to reduce the disk footprint for performance data, improve retrieval times, and facilitate rolling aggregations. The result is a single schema used for all performance data that feed the performance dashboards and reports alike.
New features of InfoSphere Optim Performance Manager V5.1
- Allows users to monitor very large workloads spanning triple-digit databases or partitions - This release provides the flexibility and efficiency required to keep up with large transaction volumes from SAP accounts to queries spanning 100 plus partitions. These enhancements are largely a function of the architectural changes referenced above and are achieved when capturing data using the in-memory metrics. Use of row compression is enabled and included in entitlement when InfoSphere Optim Performance Manager and DB2 Storage Optimization Feature are purchased together as part of a single offering such as DB2 Advanced Enterprise Server Edition or InfoSphere Warehouse Advanced Enterprise Edition.
- Provides seamless analysis of performance data from real time to any time - All dashboards monitoring DB2 9.7 or later databases now feature the ability to display data collected at any point in time, whether now, yesterday, last week, or last year. Performance dashboards give administrators access to the full range of collected information.
- Enables automatic performance history aggregation and retention - Retaining long-term performance data is important for trend detection, capacity planning, and service reporting. Now it is easier than ever to retain performance data at 1 minute, 15 minute, 1 hour, and 1 day rolling aggregations. Users choose how long to retain each aggregation level. The full range of retained data is viewable directly from the dashboards and from the reports.
- Provides in-depth connection analysis - Users can list, filter, sort, analyze, and report on database connections and resource consumption. They can drill down into executed SQL, application detail, workload and service class information, server times, I/O detail, row and transaction detail, locking information, and utility execution. Users can customize their dashboards for the specific connection information most valuable to them. Users can force a connection to free up resources and generate a connections report to share with colleagues.
- Enhances SQL analysis including static SQL and cross-baseline comparisons - DBAs can view top executions of SQL statements or aggregated metrics across executions. The new SQL Statements dashboard makes it easy to identify the SQL taking the most resources, whether it is repeated short running queries or high cost analytical queries. Flexible sorting, filtering, and content customization makes it easier to view SQL activity of interest and DBAs can more quickly drill through from aggregated views to individual executions to view resource consumption differences based on different parameter values. Use of the in-memory metrics for data collection also provides collection of static SQL performance metrics. These are viewed together with dynamic SQL in the SQL Statements dashboard or the SQL Report or Package Report. The new SQL Comparison Report lets users compare SQL performance across two time periods to identify SQL improvements and regressions across change deployments, tuning activities, or version migrations. Integration with InfoSphere Optim Query Workload Tuner 3.1 delivers a SQL workload for analysis and tuning recommendations.
- Enriched reporting for proactive tuning, capacity planning,
and service reporting - Each interactive report is like multiple
reports in one. Users can report over any timeframe, and can browse,
print, export, present, and share their analysis and results. New
reports:
- The Database Connection Report is an overview of the active database connections for a given time frame. The report displays key performance indicators, such as lock wait times, physical and logical reads and writes, and other connection statistics. This report can identify applications that are not performing well or applications that are causing problems in other database applications. DBAs can drill down into a specific connection to view complete identification details, timing information, SQL activity, locks, cache, buffer pool, sorts, and agent-related activity.
- The Performance Overview Report shows the overall health of the monitored database for all major metrics. Users can view the complete database system or only parts of it.
- The SQL Baseline Comparison Report lets you compare top SQL statements in the same database regarding the maximum improvement, or regression, or both, within two time frames. Users can drill down for a detailed analysis of a specific SQL statement. The report includes the complete statement text, general statement information, response time analysis, sort performance, I/O activity, and buffer pool activity. You can identify problems with insufficient system resources or run InfoSphere Optim Query Workload Tuner to analyze problems with the access plan or to evaluate inadequate optimizer statistics or indexes.
- The Table Usage Report lets you identify "hot" tables or fast growing tables that might cause disk contention or that might need reorganization.
- The Top SQL Package Report allows you to identify top resource consumers by package name in a specified time interval. DBAs can look at a graphic representation of the workload by day to identify heavy duty, critical, or rogue packages.
- The Workload Manager Overview Report is enhanced with additional drill down into Service SuperClass, SubClass, and Work Action Set reports including details on queue time, execution time, lifetime, and histograms for advanced tuning of Workload Manager configurations. The Service SuperClass, SubClass, and Work Action Set reports can now also be launched from the Report launchpad.
- The top SQL, Disk Consumption reports contain additional enhancements requested by users. Reports are schedulable for regular delivery. IBM Tivoli® Common Reporting is also included in the offering.
- Enhanced partition-level and pureScale performance analysis - All dashboards facilitate partition-level analysis enabling easy viewing of performance metrics across all partitions, a single partition, or a partition role. Users can configure partition categories called roles for ease of viewing metrics across similar partitions such as coordinator, data, and Extraction, Transformation, and Loading (ETL). Similarly, users can view detail across a data sharing group for specific members.
- Provides single click configuration of DB2 Workload Manager - DBAs can deploy the best practices template to get up and running quickly with DB2 Workload Manager for warehouse environments. Results have shown that the majority of performance improvements result from straight-forward deployments of DB2 Workload Manager. Deploy the default template, tune service class boundaries based on histograms of activity mappings, and enable governance to prevent rogue queries from taking over systems. For advanced users, the Workload Manager configuration interface now accepts any existing Workload Manager configuration without modification and exposes all features and options for modification.
- Delivers improvements in operations, usability, and quality - From up and running improvements, to new operational alerts, to internal efficiency improvements, to dashboard customizations, to compression enablement, this release is packed with features that users will value.
Migration
InfoSphere Optim Performance Manager V5.1 supports direct migration from DB2 Performance Expert V3.2 and from Optim Performance Manager V4.x deployments.
Deprecation
The Performance Expert Client is stabilized for use with DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows databases. It continues to be shipped with InfoSphere Optim Performance Manager V5.1 offerings and is expected to be used for reporting against the legacy performance warehouse. With InfoSphere Optim Performance Manager V5.1 performance warehousing is automatically managed for DB2 9.7, or later databases. InfoSphere Optim Performance Manager automatically aggregates the performance data into 15 minute, 1 hour, and 1 day summaries. Users can specify how long each aggregate level and new raw data is retained, and InfoSphere Optim Performance Manager will automatically delete it. All of the data is directly accessible via the web dashboards or built-in reports. The Performance Expert Client does not access the data collected with the in-memory metrics architecture nor the aggregated data just described.

InfoSphere Optim Performance Manager offerings are designed for those individuals responsible for the overall performance of their DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows data servers, typically a DBA or an application owner. It provides 24x7 monitoring of the application database and alerts users to potential problems so that they can be resolved before impacting the business. InfoSphere Optim Performance Manager provides drill down from alerts to diagnostic detail for determining whether the source of the problem is CPU, I/O, memory, workload, SQL, or another area. Integration with InfoSphere Optim Query Workload Tuner enables seamless analysis of query workloads and recommends resolutions to improve performance. InfoSphere Optim Performance Manager also enables users to collect, prune, and retain historical information facilitating problem determination, trend analysis, and capacity planning. Historical information lets you go back in time and see how a problem arose, mitigate problems first and do causal analysis later, or compare current values to prior time periods. It also helps staff be proactive about query tuning to optimize resource utilization and to plan for growth.
Several products provide specific integration with InfoSphere Optim Performance Manager that further extends the value of your performance metrics collection or extends the scope of the InfoSphere Optim performance management solution. These are listed below.
IBM InfoSphere Optim Query Workload Tuner (or IBM InfoSphere Optim Query Tuner)
IBM InfoSphere Optim Query Workload Tuner facilitates query and query workload analysis and provides expert recommendations for improving query and query workload performance. Use InfoSphere Optim Performance Manager to identify slow running queries, top CPU consumers, or query workloads needing performance improvements and seamlessly transfer them to InfoSphere Optim Query Workload Tuner for analysis and recommendations. Query Workload Tuner facilitates query analysis using query formatting annotated with relevant statistics, access plan graphical or hierarchical views, and access plan analysis. It further provides recommendations for improving query structure, statistics collection, and indexes including generated command syntax and rationale for the recommendations.
IBM Data Studio
IBM Data Studio provides database development and administration tooling for DB2 and other databases at no charge. When performance problems indicate a need for database configuration changes, Data Studio may be used to make configuration changes, object changes, create and schedule command scripts, and more.

Charge metrics definitions
Processor Value Unit (PVU)
PVU is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. The number of PVU entitlements required is based on the processor technology (defined within the PVU Table by processor value, brand, type, and model number at
and the number of processors made available to the program. IBM continues to define a processor, for the purpose of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip. A dual-core processor chip, for example, has two processor cores.
Licensee can deploy the program using either full capacity licensing or virtualization capacity (sub-capacity) licensing according to the Passport Advantage Sub-Capacity Licensing Terms (refer to the webpage below). If using full capacity licensing, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores* in the physical hardware environment made available to or managed by the program, except for those servers from which the program has been permanently removed. If using virtualization capacity licensing, licensee must obtain entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores made available to or managed by the program, as defined according to the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules at
* An activated processor core is a processor core that is available for use in a physical or virtual server, regardless of whether the capacity of the processor core can be or is limited through virtualization technologies, operating system commands, BIOS settings, or similar restrictions.
Notes:
- Some programs may require licenses for the program and what is being managed. In that case, the following applies. In addition to the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
- Some programs may be licensed on a managed basis only. In that case, the following applies: Instead of the entitlements required for the program directly, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
- A few programs on an exception basis may be licensed on a referenced basis. In that case, the following applies. Rather than obtaining entitlements for the activated processor cores available to the program, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the environment made available to the referenced program as if the program itself were executing everywhere the referenced program was executing, independent of the basis on which the referenced program is licensed.
- Express and workgroup programs may be licensed with maximum use terms. In that case, the following applies. The maximum authorized use terms and conditions for PVU licensed IBM express and middleware programs can be found in the IBM Express and Middleware Licensing Guide.

IBM Electronic Services |
IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.
The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
