Overview |
IBM Optim High Performance Unload for DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows V4.2 is a high-speed tool for unloading, extracting, and repartitioning data in DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows databases. It helps database administrators (DBAs) work with very large quantities of data with less effort and with faster results. Organizations value Optim High Performance Unload for its ability to:
- Execute concurrently with production applications -- maintaining system availability, but minimizing duration of impact to production performance
- Reduce the risk of impacting online production by fitting more work (for example, unloads, backups, migrations, and repartitioning) into tight or shrinking batch windows
- Use Optim High Performance Unload in conjunction with the new IBM DB2 Merge Backup tool to maximize availability of your database
- Deliver the value of new hardware and software investments faster by speeding database migrations
- Recover from single table failures or accidental table drops by extracting a single table from a backup for restoration
- Utilize incremental copies that can now be utilized in addition to the full image copies
Optim High Performance Unload provides the ability to choose the precise data to move to a target destination by using filters and unloading subsets of data.
To achieve high-speed and low system resources, Optim High Performance Unload reads directly from the table space file, rather than using the database engine. To avoid contention with the production database or CPU resources on the production server, Optim High Performance Unload can extract data from full, offline backups, including incremental backups.
Optim High Performance Unload streamlines processes with capabilities for creating multiple output formats during a single unload process. For example, you can choose output to files, pipes, or other devices and support multiple output formats, including XML, delimited and undelimited ASCII, and DSNTIAUL -- all within a single unload process. To conserve on storage space, Optim High Performance Unload provides the capabilities needed to move data directly from one database to another, including unloading, transferring, and loading data between a source and target without requiring intermediate storage. This allows for more efficient data transfer, particularly when migrating data from one system to another.
With backup and recovery operations focusing on media failure or disaster recovery, sometimes accidental errors such as a single table drop can create a real problem. Using Optim High Performance Unload, database administrators (DBAs) can unload a single table from a database backup and enable fast recovery.
Optim High Performance Unload V4.2 now supports DB2 pureScale environments.
Now with DB2 High Performance Unload V4.2, DBAs can better focus on choosing the data that they want to move and where they want to move it, and DB2 High Performance Unload will then execute that plan with less time spent by the DBAs, less chance of configuration mistakes, less usage of system resources, and less impact on the business that needs its important data in the new location as quickly as possible.

Description |
When database administrators (DBAs) need to extract large amounts of data from their databases, they need the data very quickly. This is especially true for database migrations. The negative impact on businesses from lengthy database migrations can be very significant or can often prevent the database migration altogether. Slow migrations delay the value delivery from new hardware and software investments. Canceled migrations mean added cost and poor performance as organizations do not get the benefits of faster and more economical hardware platforms while application performance suffers, in spite of the increasingly large amounts of time spent by the DBA trying to tune the database for better performance.
New features in Optim High Performance Unload V4.2 include:
- Support for the highly scalable DB2 pureScale, the newest version in the DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows family
- Ability to unload from a schema giving you more options to quickly unload data than the standard approach
DBAs using Optim High Performance Unload V4.2 can more quickly define, and then execute database migrations to newer IBM and other hardware and increase the scalability, reliability, and performance of their mission-critical database applications. Database application throughput increases and the time spent by the DBAs reacting to performance issues decreases, without any time-consuming or expensive application changes.

Processor Value Unit (PVU)
PVU is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. The number of PVU entitlements required is based on the processor technology (defined within the PVU Table by processor value, brand, type, and model number at
and the number of processors made available to the program. IBM continues to define a processor, for the purpose of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip. A dual-core processor chip, for example, has two processor cores.
Licensee can deploy the program using either full capacity licensing or virtualization capacity (sub-capacity) licensing according to the Passport Advantage Sub-Capacity Licensing Terms (refer to the webpage below). If using full capacity licensing, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores* in the physical hardware environment made available to or managed by the program, except for those servers from which the program has been permanently removed. If using virtualization capacity licensing, licensee must obtain entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores made available to or managed by the program, as defined according to the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules at
* An activated processor core is a processor core that is available for use in a physical or virtual server, regardless of whether the capacity of the processor core can be or is limited through virtualization technologies, operating system commands, BIOS settings, or similar restrictions.
Notes:
- Some programs may require licenses for the program and what is being managed. In that case, the following applies. In addition to the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
- Some programs may be licensed on a managed basis only. In that case, the following applies: Instead of the entitlements required for the program directly, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
- A few programs on an exception basis may be licensed on a referenced basis. In that case, the following applies. Rather than obtaining entitlements for the activated processor cores available to the program, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the environment made available to the referenced program as if the program itself were executing everywhere the referenced program was executing, independent of the basis on which the referenced program is licensed.
- Express and workgroup programs may be licensed with maximum use terms. In that case, the following applies. The maximum authorized use terms and conditions for PVU licensed IBM express and middleware programs can be found in the IBM Express and Middleware Licensing Guide.

IBM Electronic Services |
IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.
The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
