Overview
Bottom rule

With IBM Rational Host Access Transformation Services (HATS), you can rapidly transform the end user experience of your 3270 applications running on IBM System z® platforms and your 5250 applications running on IBM i without modifying those applications. Using the HATS rules-based transformation technology, the screens of your applications can be rendered with intuitive user interfaces. You can further improve the appearance, usability, and navigation of your applications by creating screen transformations and skip-screen macros.

HATS Web applications are developed to run in an IBM WebSphere® Application Server or a WebSphere Portal Server runtime, and your users access the applications through standard Web browsers, including mobile device browsers. HATS rich client applications are developed to run in the IBM Lotus Notes Client or IBM Lotus® Expeditor Client, or in an Eclipse rich client platform implementation to provide native client applications targeted for a user's desktop.

HATS can also be used to transform and expand the connectivity of your terminal applications by extending the proven business logic as standard Web Services. These services are SOA assets that can be deployed as reusable components and can be integrated into new internal applications or applications outside your enterprise.

Description
Bottom rule

IBM Rational HATS consists of two components: The toolkit and the runtime.

The IBM Rational HATS Toolkit is a set of plug-ins for the Eclipse-based IBM Rational Software Delivery Platform (Rational SDP). The HATS Toolkit enables you to develop new applications that generate GUIs for your 3270 and 5250 applications. Develop your new applications a step at a time, previewing and saving each change you make. Over time, or as quickly as desired, your HATS applications can be streamlined, making them easier to use. Your new applications can be accessed from a browser, portlet, rich client, or even a mobile device.

The HATS toolkit enables you to create a GUI suited to your business needs and standards. You can hide unnecessary information, organize data into tables, or display only required input fields. You can provide a drop-down list of valid values for an input field, change the layout and the contents of the user interface, and provide navigation buttons.

The HATS runtime is included in the HATS application, which will be deployed to a production environment, such as WebSphere Application Server, WebSphere Portal Server, or the IBM Lotus Notes client. Users interact with the HATS application through the HATS GUI and data is sent back and forth between the user and the host application.

Regardless of the kind of HATS application that you are creating, you may decide that basic customization is enough. But with HATS, you can do much more. For example:

  • Use HATS macro support to provide streamlined navigation through multiple host screens
  • Take your users directly to the first screen that you want them to use, bypassing other screens
  • Use macros or the screen combination function to combine data from several host screens into one HATS GUI panel
  • Use business logic and global variables to integrate your host applications with other back-end systems in your enterprise, as well as with your business partners' systems

From HATS macros, you can generate HATS Integration Objects, which are Java™ beans that encapsulate interactions with a host application, and use them to create Web pages and Web services. You can also use HATS Integration Objects in Enterprise JavaBeans™.

New in HATS V7.5.1

Mobile device support now includes the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch

HATS mobile device support is extended to include support for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch. Mobile device support includes the creation of projects and user interfaces that are optimized mobile devices. Access to mission critical terminal application data from these devices allows you to improve the productivity of your increasingly mobile workforce and can help expand your customer base and improve your level of service.

Rich client application support for Lotus Notes

HATS rich client applications provide native client applications targeted for a user's desktop that provide an easy-to-use graphical user interface for terminal applications. HATS rich client applications can be now be targeted to run in a Lotus Notes environment in addition to existing support for Eclipse Rich Client Platform (RCP) and Lotus Expeditor Client environments. The benefits of HATS rich client applications include:

  • Integration of mission critical terminal application data into a unified desktop
  • Improved response time
  • Rich user interface with a native application experience
  • Client side processing

Ajax-based automatic disconnect and refresh for Web transformation applications

You can improve the performance and usability of HATS Web screen transformation applications through the use of new Ajax-based automatic disconnect and automatic refresh functions.

The automatic disconnect function provides the ability to detect when the browser has been out of contact with your HATS application for a predefined period of time. When detected, disconnect processing is performed to clean up resources associated with the browser session.

The automatic refresh function offers automatic updates of the Web page view of your HATS application if the underlying host screen changes due to the host application sending screen updates.

Use of Ajax as the underlying technology for this support is beneficial in that it enables automatic disconnect and refresh to be performed without the need for Java in the browser or opening additional ports for communication between the browser and HATS.

Simplified, customizable Web service definitions

You can now create simplified Web service definitions by selecting only the desired input and output properties that you want exposed as parameters for the Web service, eliminating the need to expose them all. In addition, you can customize the names of the input and output properties. This makes HATS Web services easier to use and integrate into other applications, plus has the potential to improve performance by eliminating processing of unnecessary parameters.

Web Express Logon for standard JSR 168 portlets

Web Express Logon (WEL) gives you a mechanism to authenticate users and provides them with single signon capability. This support, previously available only for Web applications and IBM portlets, is now available for standard JSR 168 portlets.

Visual Macro Editor support for non-text host screen planes

Using the Visual Macro Editor, you can extend your HATS macros to obtain data from non-text planes of the host screen. You can use this extra screen information to enhance the GUI you provide with your HATS applications and thereby provide a more meaningful user experience. The supported non-text planes are the: Color, Field, Extended Field, DBCS, and Grid planes.

Enhanced calendar widget

An enhancement to the calendar widget lets you specify that the calendar be displayed in the current Web page instead of in a new browser window. This is helpful in cases where pop-up blockers prevent the display of the date picker in a new browser window. The visual appearance of the enhanced calendar widget is also better integrated with HATS templates for a more consistent look.

New templates

Templates enable you to provide a consistent appearance for all of the pages of your HATS application. HATS V7.5.1 includes two new templates that provide examples of new navigational menus, layouts, color schemes, and graphics.

Improved 3270 numeric field support

A new setting for the Field and Text input widgets allows you to specify that only numeric data can be entered into 3270 numeric fields.

Additions since HATS 7.5

Japanese JIS2004 support

HATS now supports the JIS2004 standard.

IBM Visual Editor support

You can use the IBM Visual Editor, that was added to the V7.5.x IBM Rational Software Delivery Platform products, such as IBM Rational Application Developer, to visually create Rich Client transformations.

Charge metrics definitions

Processor Value Unit (PVU)

PVU is a unit of measure by which this software product can be licensed. PVU entitlements are based on processor technology (defined within the PVU table1 by processor vendor, brand, type and model number). IBM continues to define a processor, for purposes of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip. Each software product has a unique price per PVU. To determine the total cost of deploying an individual software product in a specific hardware environment, you must take the following steps:

  1. For each processor core in the hardware environment on which the software product is to be licensed, determine the PVU requirement based on its processor technology per the PVU table 1
  2. Add the PVU requirements for all processor cores in the hardware environment.
  3. Multiply the software product's price per PVU by the total number of PVUs required as determined in step 2 above.

PVU entitlements are specific to a software product and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with PVU entitlements of another software product.

Unless you have deployed eligible sub-capacity products according to the sub-capacity1 terms, you must obtain PVU Proof of Entitlements (PoEs) for the maximum number of activated2 physical processor cores in the hardware environment made available to or managed by the software product. This is also referred to as full capacity licensing.

1
For information regarding PVU and sub-capacity licensing, including the latest PVU table, visit
http://www.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/pvu_licensing_for _customers.html
2
Activated processor cores are physical processor cores that are available for use in a server. They include processor cores:
  • That are activated (available for use) when the server is shipped by the manufacturer
  • That are activated subsequently through activation codes purchased from the server manufacturer by the customer
  • Whose capacity can be limited by the customer through Virtualization technologies, Operating System commands and BIOS settings

Authorized User
