Product positioning |
Java can be used for developing traditional zSeries commercial applications and also Internet and intranet applications that use standard interfaces.
64-bit SDK for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition, V5 may benefit application developers who want to take advantage of the Java APIs for z/OS, write or run applications across multiple platforms, or use Java to access zSeries data. Pure Java applications that were previously storage constrained by 31-bit addressing are expected to be able to execute in a 64-bit environment.
zSeries administrators can provide the SDK for their application developers and users. Building on
the existing z/OS Java product, it is intended that companies may continue their deployment of Java
while leveraging the benefits of zSeries quality, scalability, and service.

Technical information |
Hardware requirements
64-bit SDK for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition, V5 runs on the following IBM servers, or equivalents:
- IBM System z9 109
- zSeries z990 or z900
- zSeries z890 or z800
Software requirements
z/OS V1.6 (5694-A01) or z/OS.e V1.6 (5655-G52), or later is required.
To learn about what z/OS V1.6 offers, refer to Software Announcement 204-180 , dated August 10, 2004.
To learn about what z/OS.e V1.6 offers, refer to Software Announcement 204-179 , dated August 10, 2004.
Compatibility: 64-bit SDK for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition, V5 (5655-N99) has the same functions as SDK for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition (5655-I56), V1.4, with the exception of persistent reusable function.
64-bit SDK for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition, V1.4 (5655-M30) and SDK for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition, V1.4 (5655-I56) are independent products and can coexist on the same z/OS system.
Most Java applications executed on 64-bit SDK for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition, V1.4 (5655-M30) are expected to run unchanged on 64-bit SDK for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition, V5, provided that they do not use deprecated Java 2 SDK 1.4 APIs. Additionally, in some cases, because of a small number of incompatibilities introduced industry wide between Java 2 SDK 1.4 and SDK 5 APIs, some applications may have to change.
64-bit SDK for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition, V5 can take advantage of enhanced z/OS linkage capabilities (XPLINK.) The z/OS operating system delivers an XPLINK runtime environment for all 64-bit programs, including the Java Virtual Machine (JVM).
Programs interacting with the 64-bit Java product, whether launching the JVM or being called from the JVM through the JNI interface, must be 64-bit programs. Programs dependent on JNI interfaces may require changes at the interface boundary to conform to 64-bit data types. Application JNI routines written in C will need to be recompiled for 64-bit, which may require some code changes.
IBMJSSE2 is the sole JSSE security provider. If the provider list includes references to the older IBMJSSE, the IBMJSSE2 introduced in the SDK1.4.2 products will be invoked. Note that the deprecated com.ibm.net.ssl.* apis will not be supported. Use of the deprecated APIs will require code modifications to use APIs supported by the IBMJSSE2 provider.
For details on incompatibilities, visit
Limitations: Input Method Framework (IMF) is not supported.
Performance considerations: 64-bit SDK for z/OS, Java 2 Technology Edition, V5 allows storage-constrained applications to execute in a larger address space.
Optimal performance is expected to be obtained with the most recent levels of the hardware and operating system.

Processor
In Full Capacity charging, PoEs must be acquired for all activated "processors" (available for use) that are on the server where the Program or a component of the Program is run.
- If there are Program Components included in the offering whose function is not to be included in the charge metric, these must be listed in the Program-unique Terms of the License Information.
- IBM defines a physical processor in a computer as a functional unit that interprets and executes instructions. A physical processor consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic and logic units.
- Multi-core technology allows two or more processors (commonly called "cores") to be active on a single silicon chip. Unless otherwise announced, with multi-core technology, IBM considers each "core" to be a physical processor. For example, in a dual-core chip, there are two (2) physical processors residing on the single silicon chip.
- In the zSeries' Integrated Facility for Linux (IFL) environment, each IFL engine is considered a single "physical processor."
- Threading, a technique which makes a single processor seem to perform as two or more, does not affect the count of physical processors.
- Where "blade" technology is employed, each "blade" is considered a separate server and charging is based upon the total number of processors on the blade on which the Program is run.

IBM Electronic Services |
IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support on the IBM eServer. You should benefit from greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services is comprised of two separate, but complementary, elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent.
IBM Electronic Services news page offers you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The IBM Electronic Service Agent is a no-additional-charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. It is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to offer proactive service that maintains higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
