IBM FlashSystem 7300 delivers a virtualized, software-defined storage system

At a glance
IBM FlashSystem® 7300, machine type 4657, offers IBM® Storage Expert Care service and support options in combination with IBM Spectrum® Virtualize software, IBM FlashCore® Modules, IBM Storage Insights, and storage-class memory to deliver a Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) accelerated, hybrid cloud-enabled storage system. IBM FlashCore Modules and the use of storage-class memory as a higher level storage tier enables FlashSystem 7300 to deliver the highest available performance with the lowest latencies in its class.
FlashSystem 7300 is the replacement for FlashSystem 7200. It is a 2U, 24 NVMe, dual controller drawer that will take advantage of the second release from Intel of the Cascade Lake processor for greater performance.
FlashSystem 7300 utility model U7D delivers a variable capacity system, where billing is based on actually provisioned space above the base. The base subscription is covered by a three-year lease that entitles you to utilize the base capacity at no additional cost. If storage needs increase beyond the base capacity, usage is billed based on the average daily provisioned capacity per terabyte, per month, on a quarterly basis.
Overview
FlashSystem 7300 NVMe control enclosures feature:
- Two node canisters, each with two 10-core processors and options for up to 768 GB memory to deliver a system total of 1.5 TB memory
- Eight (four per canister) 10 Gb Ethernet ports standard for 10 Gb iSCSI connectivity
- Up to six (three per canister) I/O adapter features for 32 Gb Fibre Channel (FC), 10/25 Gb Ethernet connectivity, and 100 Gb Ethernet connectivity
- Support for up to twenty-four NVMe flash drive options
- 2U, 19-inch rack mount enclosure
The FlashSystem 7000 family offers large form factor (LFF) and small form factor (SFF) 12 Gb SAS expansion enclosure models, as well as a high-density (HD) expansion enclosure model. FlashSystem 7000 LFF Expansion Enclosure Model 12G supports up to twelve 3.5-inch drives, while FlashSystem 7000 SFF Expansion Enclosure Model 24G supports up to twenty-four 2.5-inch drives. FlashSystem 7000 HD Expansion Enclosure Model 92G supports up to ninety-two drives. 10,000 rpm disk drives, 7.2,000 rpm disk drives, and flash (solid-state) drives are supported. Drives of the same form factor can be intermixed within an enclosure and expansion enclosures can be intermixed within a FlashSystem 7300 system.
Attachment and intermixing of existing machine type 2076 expansion enclosure models 12G, 24G, and 92G with machine type 4657 FlashSystem 7300 controller and expansion models is not supported.
FlashSystem 7300 systems scale up to 392 drives with the attachment of FlashSystem 7000 expansion enclosures. FlashSystem 7300 systems can be clustered to help deliver greater performance, bandwidth, and scalability. A FlashSystem 7300 clustered system can contain up to four FlashSystem 7300 systems and up to 1,568 drives.
Machine type 4657 FlashSystem 7300 systems can only be clustered with other FlashSystem 7300 systems. Clustering with machine types 2076, 4664, 4666, 9846, or 9848 is not supported.

Key requirements
FlashSystem 7300 requires IBM Spectrum Virtualize licensed machine code level 8.5, or later, for operation.
FlashSystem 7300 control enclosures support external storage virtualization. Use of the external virtualization capability is entitled through the acquisition of IBM Spectrum Virtualize Software for SAN Volume Controller (PID 5641-VC8 in AAS and PID 5725-M19 in Passport Advantage®).

FlashSystem 7300 function capabilities are provided through IBM Spectrum Virtualize software and licensed through IBM Spectrum Virtualize Software for FlashSystem 7000 (PID 5639- F7K) for control enclosures and IBM Spectrum Virtualize Software for FlashSystem 7000 Expansions (PID 5639-EC1) for expansion enclosures.
A three-month registration for software maintenance (SWMA) for 5639-F7K or 5639-EC1 is required if IBM Storage Expert Care is not ordered with the system. IBM Storage Insights is used to monitor the system and is required in the utility model space. Description
IBM FlashSystem 7300 is a virtualized, software-defined storage system. Packaged in a 2U form factor with support for up to 24 NVMe drives, it brings enterprise function through IBM Spectrum Virtualize software to the midrange market.
FlashSystem 7300 Model 924 is designed to meet modern high-performance storage requirements, including ultra-low latency, cost-effectiveness, operational efficiency, and mission-critical reliability. It is built on a flash-optimized design, with an end-to-end NVMe strategy to bring extremely low latencies to organizations of all sizes.
FlashSystem 7300 Model 924 consists of:
- Two node canisters, each with two 10-core processors and integrated hardware-assisted compression acceleration
- 256 GB cache (128 GB per canister) standard with options from 768 GB to 1536 GB (per system)
- Eight 10 Gb Ethernet ports standard for iSCSI connectivity (copper)
- 32 Gb FC connectivity options with SCSI and FC-NVMe support (fiber)
- 10/25 Gb and 100 Gb Ethernet ports for iSCSI and NVMe RDMA connectivity
- 12 Gb SAS ports for optional expansion enclosure attachment
- Twenty-four slots for NVMe flash drives, including four storage-class memory drives
- 2U, 19-inch rack mount enclosure with AC power supplies
IBM 4657 Model U7D is the FlashSystem 7300 hardware component to be utilized in the IBM Storage Utility Offering space. It is physically and functionally identical to FlashSystem 7300 Model 924, with the exception of target configurations and variable capacity billing. The variable capacity billing uses IBM Storage Insights to monitor the system usage, enabling allocated storage usage above a base subscription rate to be billed per terabyte, per month. Allocated storage is identified as storage that is allocated to a specific host (and unusable to other hosts), whether data is written or not. For thin provisioning, the data that is actually written is considered used. For thick provisioning, total allocated volume space is considered used.
IBM Storage is also releasing FlashSystem 7000 expansion enclosures under machine type 4657.
FlashSystem 7000 LFF Expansion Enclosure Model 12G includes:
- Two expansion canisters
- 12 Gb SAS ports for control enclosure and expansion enclosure attachment
- Twelve slots for 3.5-inch SAS drives
- 2U, 19-inch rack-mount enclosure with AC power supplies
FlashSystem 7000 SFF Expansion Enclosure Model 24G includes:
- Two expansion canisters
- 12 Gb SAS ports for control enclosure and expansion enclosure attachment
- Twenty-four slots for 2.5-inch SAS drives
- 2U, 19-inch rack-mount enclosure with AC power supplies
FlashSystem 7000 HD LFF Expansion Enclosure Model 92G includes:
- Two expansion canisters
- 12 Gb SAS ports for control enclosure and expansion enclosure attachment
- Ninety-two slots for 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch SAS drives in a 3.5-inch carrier
- 5U, 19-inch rack-mount enclosure with AC power supplies
FC and Ethernet connectivity with intermix flexibility
FlashSystem 7300 Model 924 systems include eight 10 Gb Ethernet ports standard for iSCSI connectivity and two 1 Gb Ethernet ports for service technician use. These models can be configured with up to three I/O adapter features to provide up to twenty-four 32 Gb FC ports with SCSI and FC-NVMe support, or up to twelve 10/25 Gb or 100 Gb Ethernet ports with iSCSI and NVMe RDMA support.
Storage-class memory
Continuing with the commitment to transform data value with a complete NVMe strategy, FlashSystem 7300 comes with support for storage-class memory NVMe drives. These small capacity, ultra-low latency drives can be used in conjunction with Easy Tier® to further improve the overall performance of your NVMe workloads, or as a stand alone flash storage tier with even higher performance. 1.6 TB NVMe storage-class memory drives are supported in FlashSystem 7300 Model 924 control enclosures.
IBM FlashCore Modules and industry standard NVMe drive options
FlashSystem 7300 is designed for IBM FlashCore Modules, storage-class memory drives, and industry-standard NVMe flash drives. FlashCore Modules have an increased effective capacity, which if the workload allows, can store up to three times the physical capacity of the drive. These can be augmented with storage-class memory drives to accelerate your top tier workloads. Deployments requiring higher flexibility, scalability, density, and cost benefits of hard disk drives can take advantage of FlashSystem 7000 expansion enclosures.
The following NVMe FlashCore Modules are supported in FlashSystem 7300 Model 924 control enclosures:
- 4.8 TB NVMe FlashCore Module
- 9.6 TB NVMe FlashCore Module
- 19.2 TB NVMe FlashCore Module
- 38.4 TB NVMe FlashCore Module
The following NVMe industry-standard drives are supported in FlashSystem 7300 Model 924 control enclosures:
- 1.92 TB NVMe flash drive
- 3.84 TB NVMe flash drive
- 7.68 TB NVMe flash drive
- 15.36 TB NVMe flash drive
- 30.72 TB NVMe flash drive
All drives are dual-port and hot-swappable. Drives can be intermixed in the control enclosure as long as configuration rules are followed. Expansion enclosures can be intermixed behind the control enclosure.
Drive options and intermix flexibility meet a complete range of needs
FlashSystem 7300 is designed to support the complete range of data storage requirements, from highly utilized applications to high-capacity, low usage applications, and can be configured as an all-flash or a hybrid-flash array.
The following SAS drives are supported on FlashSystem 7000 expansion enclosures:
- FlashSystem 7000 LFF Expansion Enclosure Model 12G: High-capacity, archival-class, nearline 7,200 rpm drives in 6 TB, 8 TB, 10 TB, 12 TB, 14 TB, 16 TB, and 18 TB.
- FlashSystem 7000 SFF Expansion Enclosure Model 24G:
- 800 GB 3DWPD 2.5-inch drives.
- High-performance, enterprise class disk 10,000 rpm drives in 1.2 TB, 1.8 TB, and 2.4 TB.
- Flash drives in 1.92 TB, 3.84 TB, 7.68 TB, 15.36 TB, and 30.72 TB.
- FlashSystem 7000 HD LFF Expansion Enclosure Model 92G:
- High-capacity, archival-class, nearline 7,200 rpm drives in 6 TB, 8 TB, 10 TB, 12 TB, 14 TB, 16 TB, and 18 TB.
- High-performance, enterprise class disk 10,000 rpm drives in 1.2 TB, 1.8 TB, and 2.4 TB. These are 2.5-inch drives in 3.5-inch carriers.
- Flash drives in 1.92 TB, 3.84 TB, 7.68 TB, 15.36 TB, and 30.72 TB. These are 2.5-inch drives in 3.5-inch carriers.
Attachment and intermixing of existing machine type 2076 and 4664 expansion enclosure models 12F, 12G, 24F, 24G, and 92F, 92G, A9F, and AFF with machine type 4657 FlashSystem 7300 controller and expansion models is not supported.
Scalable configurations respond to growing capacity needs
A single FlashSystem 7300 Model 924 control enclosure can support up to 10 FlashSystem 7000 expansion enclosures with a maximum of 392 drives per system. Expansion enclosures are designed to be dynamically added with no downtime, helping to quickly and seamlessly respond to growing capacity demands.
FlashSystem 7300 systems can be clustered to help deliver greater performance, bandwidth, and scalability. A clustered FlashSystem 7300 system can contain up to four FlashSystem 7300 systems and up to 1,568 drives.
Machine type 4657 FlashSystem 7300 systems can only be clustered with other FlashSystem 7300 systems. Clustering with machine types 2076, 4664, 4666, 9846, or 9848 is not supported.
Further scalability can be achieved with virtualization of external storage. When FlashSystem 7300 virtualizes an external system, capacity in that external system inherits the functional richness and ease of use of FlashSystem 7300.
Designed for high availability
FlashSystem 7300 is designed to offer high system and data availability with the following features:
- HyperSwap®
- Dual-active, intelligent node canisters with mirrored cache
- Dual-port drives with automatic drive failure detection and RAID rebuild with global hot spares
- Redundant hardware, including power supplies and fans
- Hot-swappable and customer replaceable components
- Automated path failover support for the data path between the server and the drives
Encryption for enhanced data security
FlashSystem 7300 Model 924 supports encryption for data at rest. Encryption is performed by the NVMe drives and managed by the FlashSystem 7300 control enclosure for internal drives. FlashSystem 7300 control enclosures can also encrypt all attached FlashSystem 7300 expansion enclosures and data stored in externally virtualized storage subsystems.
Encryption is enabled on FlashSystem 7300 through the acquisition of the Encryption Enablement feature. This feature enables encryption on the entire FlashSystem 7300 system, including the FlashSystem 7300 control enclosure and all attached FlashSystem 7300 expansion enclosures, as well as externally virtualized storage subsystems.
The Encryption USB Flash Drives (Four Pack) feature or a supported key server are required for encryption keys management.
Rich set of functional capabilities
IBM Spectrum Virtualize combines a variety of IBM technologies, including deduplication, compression, thin provisioning, SCSI Unmap, HyperSwap (high-availability solution), Easy Tier (automatic and dynamic data tiering), encryption of internal and external virtualized storage, FlashCopy® (snapshot, Safeguarded Copy), and remote data replication. These technologies are designed to enable FlashSystem 7300 to offer a rich set of functional capabilities and deliver extraordinary levels of storage efficiency when used together.

Cloud-based IBM Storage Insights provides a single dashboard that gives you a clear view of all your IBM block storage. You will be able to make better decisions by seeing trends in performance and capacity. Storage health information enables you to focus on areas needing attention and when IBM support is needed, Storage Insights simplifies uploading logs, speeds resolution with online configuration data, and provides an overview of open tickets all in one place.
Storage Insights Pro is a subscription service available separately, or as part of IBM Storage Expert Care Premium that provides longer historical views of data, more reporting and optimization options, and supports IBM file and block storage together with third party storage.

Distributed RAID 1 is recommended for array configurations of three drives.
Distributed RAID 1 is recommended for array configurations of four or five drives depending on capacity and performance requirements, with Distributed RAID 5 as an alternative.
Distributed RAID 1 and 6 are recommended for array configurations of 6 drives depending on capacity and performance requirements.

Encryption
The Encryption Enablement feature and the Encryption USB Drive Pack feature (feature numbers ACE8 and ACEA, respectively) are not available in Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, or Russia.

All Ethernet cards can be used with the iSCSI protocol. 25 Gb iWARP Ethernet cards can also be used for clustering. 25 Gb and 100 Gb RoCE Ethernet cards can be used for NVMe RDMA.
Planning information
Client responsibilities
Physical configuration and installation planning, along with machine installation and configuration, are client responsibilities.
You are responsible for downloading or obtaining from IBM, and installing designated Machine Code (microcode, basic input/output system code (called BIOS), utility programs, device drivers, and diagnostics delivered with an IBM machine) and other software updates in a timely manner from an IBM internet website or from other electronic media, and following the instructions that IBM provides. You may request IBM to install Machine Code changes; however, you may be charged for that service.

I/O connectivity cables
Cables are required to connect the FlashSystem 7300 I/O ports to server or fabric ports.
32 Gb FC: FlashSystem 7300 requires a 50.0/125 micrometer fiber optic cable terminated with an LC Duplex connector. The following can be ordered with FlashSystem 7300 control enclosure models:

Cables are required to connect a FlashSystem 7000 expansion enclosure to the FlashSystem 7300 control enclosure and to another FlashSystem 7000 expansion enclosure. This requires a 12 Gb mini-SAS HD 4x cable terminated with SFF-8644 connectors. The following can be ordered with the FlashSystem 7000 expansion enclosures:

An IBM part or feature installed during the initial installation of an IBM machine is subject to the full warranty period specified by IBM. An IBM part or feature that replaces a previously installed part or feature assumes the remainder of the warranty period for the replaced part or feature. An IBM part or feature added to a machine without replacing a previously installed part or feature is subject to a full warranty. Unless specified otherwise, the warranty period, type of warranty service, and service level of a part or feature are the same as those for the machine in which it is installed.

IBM will attempt to resolve your problem over the telephone, or electronically through an IBM website. Certain machines contain remote support capabilities for direct problem reporting, remote problem determination, and resolution with IBM. You must follow the problem determination and resolution procedures that IBM specifies. Following problem determination, if IBM determines on-site service is required, scheduling of service will depend upon the time of your call, machine technology and redundancy, and availability of parts. If applicable to your product, parts considered Client Replaceable Units (CRUs) will be provided as part of the machine's standard warranty service.
Service levels are response-time objectives and are not guaranteed. The specified level of warranty service may not be available in all worldwide locations. Additional charges may apply outside IBM's normal service area. Contact your local IBM representative or your reseller for country-specific and location-specific information.
CRU Service
IBM provides replacement CRUs to you for you to install. CRU information and replacement instructions are shipped with your machine and are available from IBM upon your request. CRUs are designated as being either a Tier 1 (mandatory) or a Tier 2 (optional) CRU.
Tier 1 (mandatory) CRU
Installation of Tier 1 CRUs, as specified in this announcement, is your responsibility. If IBM installs a Tier 1 CRU at your request, you will be charged for the installation.
Tier 2 (optional) CRU
You may install a Tier 2 CRU yourself or request IBM to install it, at no additional charge.
Based upon availability, CRUs will be shipped for next business day (NBD) delivery. IBM specifies, in the materials shipped with a replacement CRU, whether a defective CRU must be returned to IBM. When return is required, return instructions and a container are shipped with the replacement CRU. You may be charged for the replacement CRU if IBM does not receive the defective CRU within 15 days of your receipt of the replacement.

CRU and On-site Service
At IBM's discretion, you will receive specified CRU service, or IBM will repair the failing machine at your location and verify its operation. You must provide a suitable working area to allow disassembly and reassembly of the IBM machine. The area must be clean, well-lit, and suitable for the purpose.
Service level is:
- 9 hours per day, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, next business day response. Calls must be received by 5:00 PM local time in order to qualify for next business day response.
CRU and Machine Exchange Service
At IBM's discretion, you will receive specified CRU service, or IBM will initiate shipment of a replacement machine to your location. You are responsible for its installation and verification of operation. You must pack the failed machine into the shipping container that contained the replacement machine and return the failed machine to IBM. Transportation charges, both ways, are paid by IBM. You may be charged for the replacement machine if IBM does not receive the failed machine within 15 days of your receipt of the replacement.
Advanced Part Exchange warranty service
Use the Advanced Part Exchange warranty service to order and track replacement parts directly under Client Replaceable Unit or Parts Only Service following procedures that are provided by IBM. Replacement parts are shipped to your location for you to install. IBM will use commercially reasonable delivery methods to ship the replacement part for NBD delivery. Advanced Part Exchange warranty service is not available in all countries. You must be approved and registered to use this service. Contact your IBM representative or your reseller for further information.

International Warranty Service
International Warranty Service allows you to relocate any machine that is eligible for International Warranty Service and receive continued warranty service in any country where the IBM machine is serviced. If you move your machine to a different country, you are required to report the machine information to your Business Partner or IBM representative.
The warranty service type and the service level provided in the servicing country may be different from that provided in the country in which the machine was purchased. Warranty service will be provided with the prevailing warranty service type and service level available for the eligible machine type in the servicing country, and the warranty period observed will be that of the country in which the machine was purchased.

Client Replaceable Unit (CRU) Service
If your problem can be resolved with a CRU (for example, DIMM, battery, power supply, drive, or hard disk drive), and depending upon the maintenance service offerings in your geography, IBM will ship the replacement CRU to you for you to install. CRU information and replacement instructions are shipped with your machine and are available from IBM upon your request.
Based upon availability, CRUs will be shipped for next business day delivery. IBM specifies, in the materials shipped with a replacement CRU, whether a defective CRU must be returned to IBM. Non-IBM parts service
Under certain conditions, IBM provides services for selected non-IBM parts at no additional charge for machines that are covered under warranty service upgrades or maintenance services.
This service includes hardware problem determination (PD) on the non-IBM parts (for example, adapter cards, PCMCIA cards, disk drives, memory) installed within IBM machines and provides the labor to replace the failing parts at no additional charge.
If IBM has a Technical Service Agreement with the manufacturer of the failing part, or if the failing part is an accommodations part (a part with an IBM FRU label), IBM may also source and replace the failing part at no additional charge. For all other non-IBM parts, clients are responsible for sourcing the parts. Installation labor is provided at no additional charge, if the machine is covered under a warranty service upgrade or a maintenance service.

Licensed Machine Code
IBM Machine Code is licensed for use by a client on the IBM machine for which it was provided by IBM under the terms and conditions of the IBM License Agreement for Machine Code, to enable the machine to function in accordance with its specifications, and only for the capacity authorized by IBM and acquired by the client. You can obtain the agreement from the License Agreement for Machine Code and Licensed Internal Code website.
Access to Machine Code updates is conditioned on entitlement and license validation in accordance with IBM policy and practice. IBM may verify entitlement through customer number, serial number, electronic restrictions, or any other means or methods employed by IBM in its discretion.
