IBM intends to deliver a replacement for the HCA3-O LR long-range coupling link in 2017.

The replacement long-range coupling link is intended to be delivered on IBM z13™ and z13s and later servers, and will not be available on IBM® zEC12/zBC12 or earlier servers. It is intended to handle distances of 10 km unrepeated and 100 km with a qualified dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) device. The new links are also planned to require a PCIe I/O drawer with an available I/O slot, and will use the same fiber links as InfiniBand 1x coupling links.

IBM intends to remove support for the HCA3-O LR fanout for 1x IFB InfiniBand coupling links and the HCA3-O fanout for the 12x IFB InfiniBand coupling links for high-end z Systems™.

The high-end server following the IBM z13 will be the last high-end z Systems server to support HCA3-O LR 1x IFB InfiniBand coupling links or HCA3-O 12x IFB InfiniBand coupling links.

z Systems enterprises should plan to migrate off of these InfiniBand coupling links. For high-speed short-range coupling connectivity, enterprises should migrate to the Integrated Coupling Adapter (ICA-SR). For long-range coupling connectivity, enterprises should migrate to the new replacement long-range coupling link when available. For long-range coupling connectivity requiring a DWDM, enterprises will need to determine their desired DWDM vendor's plan to qualify the planned replacement long-range coupling link.

IBM intends to remove support for the HCA3-O LR fanout for 1x IFB InfiniBand coupling links for mid-range z Systems.

The IBM z13s will be the last mid-range z Systems server to support HCA3-O LR 1x IFB InfiniBand coupling links. Mid-range z Systems enterprises should plan to migrate off of the InfiniBand links to the new replacement long-range link when available.

Note: zBC12 and zEC12 enterprises will not have long-distance coupling connectivity to the mid-range z Systems generation following IBM z13s. Migration to the replacement long-range link on IBM z13, IBM z13s, and future server generations will need to be considered for future connectivity.

Note: The next generation high-end z Systems server following IBM z13 will continue to support HCA3-O LR 1x IFB InfiniBand coupling links.

Note: The following SOD was already issued in Hardware Announcement 116-002, dated February 16, 2016.

Removal of support for the HCA3-O fanout for the 12x IFB InfiniBand coupling links for mid-range z Systems.

The IBM z13s will be the last mid-range z Systems server to support HCA3-O (#0171) 12x IFB InfiniBand coupling links. Mid-range z Systems enterprises should continue migrating to the Integrated Coupling Adapter (ICA-SR) (#0172) for high-speed short-range coupling connectivity.

Note: zBC12 and zEC12 enterprises will not have short-distance coupling connectivity to the mid-range z Systems generation following IBM z13s; migration to the Integrated Coupling Adapter (ICA-SR) (#0172) on IBM z13, IBM z13s, and future server generations will need to be considered for future connectivity.

Note: The next generation high-end z Systems server following IBM z13 will continue to support HCA3-O 12x IFB InfiniBand coupling links.
