IBM® 3599 Tape Media provides the ability to order IBM 3592 Advanced Data, 3592 Advanced WORM, and 3592 Advanced Economy Tape Cartridge models with the following features:
- Rewritable standard data cartridges of 10 TB native physical capacity
- Write-once, read-many (WORM) cartridges of 10 TB native physical capacity
- Rewritable economy data cartridges of 2 TB native physical capacity
- Labeled cartridges with the ability to specify a color-coded, volume serial number
- Labeled and initialized cartridges with the ability to specify a color-coded, volume serial number to save time and labor when adding cartridges to library inventory

Nine new models of IBM 3599 Tape Media deliver the option to order data cartridges for IBM TS1150 tape drive (machine type 3592, Model E08). The following 3599 models are available:
- IBM 3592 Advanced Data cartridge - Type D: Models 425, 525, and 625 provide up to 10 TB read/write native physical capacity of storage
- IBM 3592 Advanced Economy cartridge - Type L: Models 435, 535, and 635 provide up to 2 TB rewritable native physical capacity of storage
- IBM 3592 Advanced WORM cartridge - Type Z: Models 445, 545, and 645 provide WORM storage on a 10 TB or higher capacity cartridge
These tape media models have cartridge memory in each data cartridge designed to help enhance functionality and reliability of the media. This advanced, higher capacity tape cartridge media is supported when TS1150 Model E08 is integrated or used in the IBM TS3500 tape library, or when TS1150 HD2-compatible Model EH8 is integrated or used in the IBM TS4500 tape library (machine type 3584) and standalone rack environments. The latest versions of TS1150 drive microcode and library or subsystem firmware may be required to support the higher capacity IBM 3592 Advanced Data cartridges.
The higher capacity tape cartridges are designed for applications such as archiving and data retention, including those applications requiring security or an audit trail. These cartridges work with the IBM TS1150 to help prevent the unauthorized access, alteration, or deletion of user data, and are supported by the encryption capability in the TS1150 Model E08 and EH8 tape drives and its associated IBM Security Key License Manager component.
As with previous models, these models deliver flexibility in the specification and ordering of prelabeled and initialized data cartridges.

IBM 3599 Tape Media enables customers to order prelabeled, prelabeled and initialized, or bulk-packaged tape data cartridges. These cartridges can be used with IBM TS1150 tape drive Model E08 or HD2-compatible Model EH8.
Note: The Advanced Data (Type D) cartridges, Advanced Economy (Type L) cartridges, and Advanced WORM (Type Z) cartridges are not supported on legacy J1A, E05, E06, and E07 drives.
The new 3599 models include:
- Model 425 - IBM Tape Cartridges 3592, Advanced Data - Type D, 10 TB, in a 20-pack, initialized and prelabeled with starting volume serial information
- Model 525 - IBM Tape Cartridges 3592, Advanced Data - Type D, 10 TB, in a 20-pack, prelabeled with starting volume serial information
- Model 625 - IBM Tape Cartridges 3592, Advanced Data - Type D, 10 TB, in a 20-pack
- Model 435 - IBM Tape Cartridges 3592, Advanced Economy - Type L, 2 TB, in a 20-pack, initialized and prelabeled with starting volume serial information
- Model 535 - IBM Tape Cartridges 3592, Advanced Economy - Type L, 2 TB, in a 20-pack, prelabeled with starting volume serial information
- Model 635 - IBM Tape Cartridges 3592, Advanced Economy - Type L, 2 TB, in a 20-pack
- Model 445 - IBM Tape Cartridges 3592, Advanced WORM - Type Z, 10 TB, in a 20-pack, initialized and prelabeled with starting volume serial information
- Model 545 - IBM Tape Cartridges 3592, Advanced WORM - Type Z, 10 TB, in a 20-pack, prelabeled with starting volume serial information
- Model 645 - IBM Tape Cartridges 3592, Advanced WORM - Type Z, 10 TB, in a 20-pack
Features of IBM 3592 tape cartridges include:
- Cartridge memory built into every data cartridge to help enhance functionality and media reliability by storing access history and media performance information for use by the tape drive every time the cartridge is accessed
- Initialization and prelabeling, with the ability to specify a starting volume serial and color-coding to help save time and labor when adding new cartridges into the existing inventory

IBM offers a wide range of storage media products to support storage applications ranging from PC products to enterprise-wide mainframe libraries. IBM TS1150 tape drives are designed to provide high capacity, performance, and reliability across a broad range of computing environments.
The TS1140 Models E08 and EH8 are the next generation of the highly successful 3592 enterprise tape drive. TS1150 is supported in a wide range of environments, including IBM Power Systems™, IBM System i®, IBM System p®, IBM System x®, and other servers running AIX®, Linux™, Oracle Solaris, and Microsoft™ Windows™ operating system environments. The TS1150 has significant performance and capacity benefits over the IBM TS1140 and other half-inch tape drives.
TS1150 is designed for high-performance computing environments where high reliability, capacity, and performance are mandated. The following environments can benefit from the TS1150.
- Current enterprise tape drive applications in TS4500 environments where the following requirements need to be met:
- Space allocated to tape cartridges needs to be reduced within automation solutions or offline storage.
- Backup windows are growing and there is a need for higher performance tape drives to back up larger amounts of data in less time.
- A Fibre Channel-attached drive where native switched fabric capability is required.
- Other large-scale tape environments, such as:
- High-speed data-save operations where backup windows are critical and large amounts of data are archived to tape.
- Large-scale automated tape installations where performance, capacity, and reliability are requirements.
- Large-scale mass data archive applications where massive amounts of data need to be quickly saved to tape for storage and later recalled, such as the seismic industry, data warehousing, and record management applications.
- Environments where both streaming and start/stop (access), and large and small file workloads are required.
Other target customers for the TS1150 are encryption opportunities in medium to large enterprises in the financial sector, government and public sector, and other industries that must protect their customer tape data from loss or theft.
IBM Tape Cartridge 3592 media provides rewritable data, WORM, and cleaning cartridges for use in the TS1150 tape drives that can be purchased from IBM using feature numbers with the initial order of the machine. IBM 3599 provides a way to order these with a variety of customer-specified options in packaging and labeling. With these options, customers can:
- Save time and labor by prelabeling cartridges when adding new cartridges into an existing inventory system
- Order in bulk to help save procurement time and expense
If self-labeling is preferred, Models 625, 635, and 645 provide a way to order bulk cartridges. To save time and labor in labeling cartridges, Models 425, 435, and 445 (labeling and initialization) and 525, 535, and 545 (labeling only) are available to address all aspects of the requirements for data cartridge labeling specifications.

Hardware requirements
The 3599 Tape Media offers data cartridges fully configured to help address requirements for data cartridge labeling and initialization needs. For the Tape Cartridge 3592 Data, 10 TB a 20-pack of data cartridges with one of the three data cartridge labeled and initialized options can be selected:
- Labeled and initialized data cartridges (Model 425)
- Labeled only data cartridges (Model 525)
- Standard data cartridges without labeling or initialization (Model 625)
For the IBM TS1150 tape drive Model E08 and HD2-compatible Model EH8 that are integrated or used in the IBM TS3500 or TS4500 tape library (machine type 3584) and stand-alone rack environments, the latest versions of TS1150 drive microcode and library or subsystem firmware may be required to support the higher capacity IBM Tape Cartridge 3592 media.
Order Model 525 for labeled 3592 Data Cartridges that are not initialized. A full selection of label colors and number sequence can be specified, and IBM will label all the data cartridges ordered according to the feature numbers selected. The following items can be specified:
Type: For Models 425 and 525 with cartridge media identifier letters (JD/9xxx)
Label background options: Both Color/Vibrant (9022) and White (9077) are available
VOLSER color choices: All ten background colors are available (#9003 to #9012)
Starting VOLSER sequence number: Select the starting sequence number with the following features:
- First alphanumeric digit (0 to 9 and A to Z): 9100 ('0') to 9135 ('Z')
- Second alphanumeric digit (0 to 9 and A to Z): 9200 ('0') to 9235 ('Z')
- Third alphanumeric digit (0 to 9 and A to Z): 9300 ('0') to 9335 ('Z')
- Fourth numeric digit (0 to 9): 9400 ('0') to 9409 ('9')
- Fifth numeric digit (0 to 9): 9500 ('0') to 9509 ('9')
- Sixth numeric digit is set to '0'
Planning information
You are responsible for downloading or obtaining from IBM, and installing designated Machine Code (microcode, basic input/output system code (called BIOS), utility programs, device drivers, and diagnostics delivered with an IBM machine) and other software updates in a timely manner from an IBM Internet website or from other electronic media, and following the instructions that IBM provides. You may request IBM to install Machine Code changes; however, you may be charged for that service.
