At a glance |
WebSphere® DataPower® gateway appliances are positioned to act as security and integration gateways for a full range of web, mobile, application programming interface (API), service-oriented architecture (SOA), business-to-business (B2B), and cloud workloads in a single, highly secure, highly consumable, DMZ-ready appliance.
Version 6.0.1 new features and enhancements include:
- Improved application scalability and performance for HTTP and web services workloads with added support for the Application Optimization feature on the DataPower B2B Appliance XB62
- The ability to leverage the DataPower B2B Appliance XB62 to provide API gateway functionality for the IBM® API Management V2.0 solution
- Improved handling of large message payloads for optimal performance and transmission to back-end systems
- Enhanced JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) schema support for more flexible and easier-to-create message validation for Representational State Transfer (REST), mobile, and API workloads
- Seamless utilization of XQuery and JSONiq to access DataPower-unique data structures and metadata to control mediation flows
- Enhanced WS-MediationPolicy support to more easily take advantage of XQuery and JSON schema validation within dynamic processing policies
- IPv6 certification by University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) for USGv6 compliance
- The ability to configure the appliance to allow the main task of the firmware to run in Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 Level 1 cryptographic mode
- The capability to configure the appliance to comply with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) SP800-131a security standard
Note: Firmware V6.0.1 is not supported on 9235/9004 physical appliances.

Description |
Emerging technology trends, like mobile and API management, allow businesses to expand the scope of valuable IT assets to new channels and use cases. These shifts in technology enable businesses to reach consumers, business partners, and clients anywhere in the world at any time. These new opportunities require the enterprise to accommodate additional security capabilities and access controls, and to manage the exponential growth in application traffic.
WebSphere DataPower gateway appliances provided industry-leading security, control, optimization, and integration capabilities for SOA and B2B infrastructures for more than 12 years. WebSphere DataPower firmware V6.0.1 extends these capabilities to additional business channels and use cases and provides additional capabilities to:
- Utilize the AO feature on the DataPower B2B Appliance XB62 to:
- Distribute workload across multiple appliances without the need for an external load balancer.
- Intelligently balance loads to back-end servers based on dynamic metadata.
- Provide session affinity based routing to back-end servers.
- Integrate with IBM z/OS® Communications Server Sysplex Distributor in order to balance workload to DataPower appliances.
- Simplify deployment topologies and provide operational agility though the embedded On Demand Router (ODR) capability within DataPower appliances. This capability enables intelligent load balancing decisions to back-end WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment environments, including those running Worklight® , based on dynamic, real-time topology, and workload information.
Note: There are limitations for self-balancing with B2B Gateway service. For more information, refer to the DataPower Information Center at
- Leverage the DataPower B2B Appliance XB62 as the API gateway for web API workloads and provide API gateway functionality for the IBM API Management V2.0 solution.
- Support flow control on message attachments for multiprotocol gateway and web service proxy services. Message attachment flow control helps prevent unprocessed message attachments from being buffered on the DataPower appliance.
- Take advantage of JSON Reference support plus XQuery and JSONiq enhancements that:
- Enable reuse and composability of JSON schema with JSON reference to other JSON schemas.
- Extend programming model support for XQuery and JSONiq, including access to multistep context variables and HTTP protocol headers and reuse by configurable parameters.
- Exploit usability enhancements for XQuery and JSONiq, including improved globalization support, code tracing, and relaxation of specification limitations.
- Extend the capabilities of WS-MediationPolicy to support XQuery, JSON schema validation, and payload-size based conditional action enforcement:
- Provide a new Execute assertion to support XQuery execution.
- Extend ValidationMessage assertion behavior to support JSON schema validation.
- Define quality of service (QoS) policy based on message size with WS-MediationPolicy (RequestPayload, ResponsePayload, and TotalPayload). This provides the ability to take specific actions when the total volume of messages exceeds specified thresholds.
- Attain IPv6 compliance certification via the USGv6 test program offered by the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) for USGv6 compliance. USGv6 is a test program designated by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) that provides a proof of compliance to IPv6 specifications outlined in current industry standards for common network products.
- Configure the appliance to allow the main task of the firmware to run in Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 140-2 Level 1 cryptographic mode. FIPS 140-2 is a US government computer security standard that is used to accredit cryptographic modules. In FIPS 140-2 Level 1 mode, the main task of the DataPower feature does all of its cryptography by using a cryptographic software module that is validated to FIPS 140-2 Level 1.
- Comply with the NIST SP800-131a security standard. SP800-131a requires longer key lengths and stronger cryptographic algorithms than other standards such as FIPS 140-2.
Accessibility by people with disabilities

Statement of good security practices |
IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated, or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective. IBM does not warrant that systems and products are immune from the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
