IBM® z/OS® is designed to keep applications and data available, systems highly secure, server utilization high, and to enable agile development. z/OS continuous delivery (CD) offers clients the opportunity to use new z/OS functions, capabilities, and technologies by applying service rather than upgrading to a new z/OS release.

This quarter's CD update further extends the capabilities of z/OS V2.5 with key features that include the following:

  • IBM zCX Foundation for Red Hat® OpenShift®. Support for Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform on z/OS with zCX has been added with the purchase of IBM zCX Foundation for Red Hat OpenShift.
  • The IBM Z® and LinuxONE Container Registry. This new channel holds open-source container images that can be pulled and managed through common graphical and command-line interfaces that support containerized workloads.
  • IBM Infoprint Server enhancements. New capabilities support Extended Address Volumes (EAV) and allow for better sendmail configuration.
  • FTP server JES access control. A new SAF resource controls which z/OS users are permitted to use the z/OS FTP server's JES operating mode.
  • IBM z/OS Management Facility (z/OSMF) enhancements. New capabilities include validation support for z/OSMF Security Configuration Assistant (SCA), z/OSMF desktop dataset/file comparison, new REST APIs, and more. Together, these enhancements help enable a more modernized, consistent, and efficient management experience for z/OS.
  • BCPii HWIREST support for commands from ISV and TSO/E REXX environments. z/OS BCPii delivers support that allows TSO/E REXX and ISV REXX applications the ability to issue commands previously not permitted for those environments.
  • Detect and diagnose active SLIP PER traps for enhanced resiliency. A new event in Runtime Diagnostics will quickly detect if a SLIP PER trap is active and deliver diagnostic data designed to enable troubleshooting of system performance problems, limit business impact, and potentially prevent an outage.

Description

Top rule

IBM zCX Foundation for Red Hat OpenShift

As stated in Software Announcement AP22-0088, dated March 15, 2022, for added client choice, IBM is delivering Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform support available on IBM z/OS with zCX in addition to the many server platforms already supported today.

IBM and LinuxONE Container Registry

The IBM Z and LinuxONE Container Registry contains a collection of open-source images that can be pulled and managed through common graphical and command-line interfaces that support containerized workloads. These images run in both the Linux® and zCX environments of z/OS on IBM Z and are built from source with no unintended binary payloads. Images are scanned for known vulnerabilities with reports provided, and hashes for each image are published for reference and secure image pulls. All images are OCI-compliant and built for deployment in a local environment. The registry is available to users free of charge.

To learn more and to get started, see the Container Images for IBM Z and LinuxONE web page.

Infoprint Server enhancements

Support for Infoprint Server includes the following:

  • Extended Address Volumes (EAV) support

Infoprint Server now supports data sets located on EAVs. This feature is available on z/OS V2.4 with the PTF for APAR OA62290, and on z/OS V2.5 with the PTF for APAR OA61742.

  • Sendmail enhancements

Infoprint Server added two new attributes that provide an option for removing the sender's userid@domainname or replacing it with a user-supplied address. The reply address may also be set with a user-supplied address. With the PTF for APAR OA62221, this function is available on z/OS V2.5.

FTP server JES access control

z/OS provides a new System Authorization Facility (SAF) resource to control which z/OS users are permitted to use the z/OS FTP server's JES operating mode. By defining a SAF SERVAUTH class profile for the EZB.FTP.sysname.ftpdaemonname.ACCESS.JES resource, clients can control which z/OS user IDs or groups are permitted to enter the FILETYPE=JES operating mode. With the PTF for APAR PH42618, this function is available on z/OS V2.3 and later.

z/OSMF enhancements

As the modernization platform of z/OS management, z/OSMF continues to deliver enhanced and new functions with z/OS V2.5. Together, they enable higher efficiency, lower skill requirements, and provide more industry-popular interfaces to drive z/OS operations. The following z/OSMF enhancements have been delivered in 1Q 2022:

  • SCA Validation REST API

z/OSMF Security Configuration Assistant is enhanced to allow security administrators or authorized system administrators to automatically validate security requirements based on the simple JSON format of security requirements. A user could invoke this validation function with the REST API so that the way to consume this new capability is flexible. For instance, it could be driven by a workflow step or an Ansible® playbook. With the PTFs for APAR PH41248, this function is available on z/OS V2.4 and later.

  • Policy-based archived workflow management

z/OSMF workflow is enhanced to support automatically archiving workflows to a user-specified path based on a predefined policy. This can help users to offload workflow data from a z/OSMF data file system and have better management of the data. With the PTFs for APAR PH39153, this function is available on z/OS V2.4 and later.

  • z/OSMF data set and file comparison and retrieving single system variable

z/OSMF is enhanced to provide the capability to compare two files on the z/OSMF desktop. This enables a client to take a file or data set member and compare it with another file or data set member and visualize the differences between the entities. The changes are denoted in a different color; then a simple click can move the changes from one file to the other, if needed. Because this function is available as part of the z/OSMF desktop editor, it can be easy to synchronize two files or see what is different between them. This brings a powerful capability to z/OSMF's browser-based environment. With the PTFs for APAR PH39605, this function is available on z/OS V2.4 and later.

  • Incident Log Problem Documentation Upload Utility (PDUU) HTTPS support

The z/OSMF Incident Log is enhanced to support using HTTPS protocol for PDUU transmission of diagnostic data. This can provide highly secure transmission for a PDUU approach. With the PTFs for APAR PH39848, this function is available on z/OS V2.4 and later.

  • REST API to retrieve SYSLOG

A new REST API supports retrieving SYSLOG based on timestamp so users can use their favorite programming language to analyze or save the system log. With the PTFs for APAR PH38968, this function is available on z/OS V2.4 and later.

  • z/OS Symbol REST API (Active value only)

A new REST API supports retrieving the current value of z/OS symbols. With the PTFs for APAR PH41196, this function is available on z/OS V2.4 and later.

BCPii HWIREST support for commands from ISV and TSO/E REXX environments

z/OS BCPii delivers support that allows TSO/E REXX and ISV REXX applications the ability to issue commands previously not permitted for those environments. This includes the ability to activate and load LPARs, issue requests to the console, and more. See Appendix A of the Hardware Management Console Web Services API document for the full list of supported REST API operations through HWIREST. This support is available on z/OS V2.4 and z/OS V2.5 with the corresponding PTFs for APAR OA61976. It also requires an IBM z15 server with SE 2.15.0 with MCL P46598.370, Bundle S38 or higher, and HMC 2.15.0 with MCL P46686.001, Bundle H25 or higher.

New Runtime Diagnostics event for detecting and diagnosing active SLIP PER traps

The design of certain SLIP PER traps may carry an increased and possibly unpredictable potential for performance impact. When such a SLIP PER trap gets enabled, clients may experience a significant decline in system performance. This performance impact may not be easily understood to be due to an active SLIP PER trap, especially by personnel who may be unaware that such a trap is currently active.

To resolve this issue, IBM is introducing a new Runtime Diagnostics event that will detect if a SLIP PER trap is active. If an active SLIP PER trap is found, Runtime Diagnostics will display the SLIP PER trap ID and the date/time it was enabled on a multiline WTO. This new event can be invoked from the MODIFY HZR,ANALYZE command.

This new Runtime Diagnostics event will help a system operator or IBM support staff to more easily determine if there is an active SLIP PER trap on their system. This may significantly reduce the diagnosis and recovery time for systems that are experiencing performance impacts due to a SLIP PER trap.

With the PTFs for APAR OA62274, this function is available on z/OS V2.3 and later.

Specified operating environment

Hardware requirements

z/OS V2.5 operates on the following IBM Z servers:

  • z15 Models T01 and T02
  • z14 Models M01-M05
  • z14 Model ZR1
  • z13®
  • z13s®

For a complete description of z/OS V2.5 hardware requirements, see z/OS V2.5 Planning for Installation (GA32-0890) in IBM Documentation .

Software requirements

The z/OS base is a system that can be IPLed. There are no software prerequisites to IPL. Specific functions might require additional products not included in the z/OS base or optional features of z/OS. See z/OS V2.5 Planning for Installation (GA32-0890) in IBM Documentation for a list of specific software requirements.

If you run z/OS V2.5 as a guest of IBM z/VM, z/VM must be at a supported level.

Compatibility

Coexistence, release migration, and fallback

z/OS gives you compatibility and flexibility as you migrate systems in a multisystem configuration by enabling multiple releases of z/OS to coexist. This includes non-Parallel Sysplex® and Parallel Sysplex multisystem configurations. Coexistence enables systems within a multisystem configuration to be upgraded to a new release level of z/OS one system at a time. This is contingent on whether the release you are migrating to can coexist with the lowest release running in your multisystem configuration.

Note: These statements represent the current intention of IBM. IBM reserves the right to change or alter the Coexistence-Migration-Fallback policy in the future or to exclude certain releases beyond those stated. IBM development plans are subject to change or withdrawal without further notice. Any reliance on this statement of direction is at the relying party's sole risk and does not create any liability or obligation for IBM.

IBM provides the following coexistence, migration, and fallback for z/OS V2.5:

IBM plans to support an n-2 approach, where three consecutive releases are planned to be supported for coexistence, fallback, and migration. For example, where "n" is z/OS V2.5, IBM intends to enable you to upgrade from z/OS V2.4 directly to z/OS V2.5 with full coexistence, migration, and fallback support to maximize the value of your investment, and from z/OS V2.3 to z/OS V2.5 with full coexistence, migration, and fallback support.

Migration forward as well as fallback should be made within the same z/OS releases supported by the coexistence policy.

Coexistence-Migration-Fallback for z/OS V2.5

Release Coexistence-Migration-Fallback supported with release in column 1
z/OS V2.3 z/OS V2.1 1 , z/OS V2.2 2 , z/OS V2.3 3 , z/OS V2.4, z/OS V2.5
z/OS V2.4 z/OS V2.2 2 , z/OS V2.3 3 , z/OS V2.4, z/OS V2.5
z/OS V2.5 z/OS V2.3 3 , z/OS V2.4, z/OS V2.5

End of service

1 z/OS V2.1 end of service was September 30, 2018.
2 z/OS V2.2 end of service was September 30, 2020.
3 z/OS V2.3 end of service is planned for September 30, 2022.

This consistent coexistence, migration, and fallback policy applies to release migrations for all configurations, whether they are:

  • Single-system configurations
  • Individual systems within a multisystem configuration
  • Cases where a simultaneous IPL is used to migrate all systems in a multisystem configuration at the same time

License metric change

  • z/OS V2 is only offered with NALC pricing for clients using NALC for z/OS, V1 who are using PSLC for their middleware programs. z/OS V2 clients using AWLC or WLC or AEWLC or EWLC pricing for their middleware programs must migrate from NALC to zNALC pricing.
  • All z/OS clients using NALC pricing are encouraged to migrate to zNALC pricing to obtain the zNALC advantages such as sub-capacity pricing for z/OS with zNALC supported by the SCRT reports, lower prices above 45 MSUs, and aggregated pricing across qualified Parallel Sysplexes.

Security, auditability, and control

Data security and auditability in the z/OS environment are enhanced by the functions available in the optional Security Server for z/OS feature.

The client is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

Statement of good security practices

Top rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a lawful, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
