Enterprises are embracing digital transformation to respond to the imperatives of digital business. Cloud is one of the key elements of digital transformation, providing agility, flexibility, and on-demand availability to enterprise assets. Although cloud platforms offer great value, not every application can be moved to the cloud because of regulatory concerns and the need for higher quality of service (QoS). A hybrid cloud strategy is emerging as a popular choice in which cloud-qualified applications are deployed on a cloud platform and integrated with applications and data on-premises.
CICS TX enables online applications to be deployed and extended on any public or private cloud platform of choice. CICS TX supports hybrid cloud topology to enable integration across CICS applications deployed in a cloud environment and on-premises with CICS TS and TXSeries.
Containerization is a widely supported technology across cloud vendors, including orchestration of containerized workloads using Kubernetes. Benefits of containers include:
- Lightweight footprint and minimal overhead
- Portability across machines
- Simplified DevOps practices
- Accelerated continuous integration
CICS TX 11.1 delivers the following key features:
- Integration with IBM COBOL
for Linux® on x86 1.1
CICS TX 11.1 is an integrated offering composed of the CICS TX application server and IBM COBOL for Linux on x86 1.1 in a single Docker image. The CICS TX 11.1 image includes the IBM COBOL compiler and runtime components required for CICS COBOL application development and deployment. The IBM COBOL compiler can be used to create and maintain mission-critical line-of-business CICS COBOL applications for CICS TX. It enables COBOL batch applications to access VSAM emulated files stored in IBM Db2 and CICS TX SFS. The IBM COBOL compiler supports the integrated CICS translator to handle native COBOL and embedded CICS statements in a CICS COBOL application.
With CICS TX 11.1, developers can set up the CICS and COBOL environment in as little as a few minutes in the cloud, which can result in accelerated application development at reduced cost and effort. Single point of support for CICS TX and IBM COBOL helps ensure a faster and better support experience.
- Red Hat certified containers and operators
The certified container image can enable quicker time-to-value by providing pretested components on the Red Hat OpenShift container platform.
Certified CICS TX Operator supports Day 1 and Day 2 operations. It can provide better control of operations when running containers in the Kubernetes environment. It can ease the management effort associated with common Day-2 operational tasks, such as enabling trace, monitoring, and the recovery of pods upon failure.
One of the key capabilities of the CICS TX Operator is zero-downtime during upgrades and rollback. This helps to ensure minimum business impact during the upgrading of applications and version-to-version product upgrades.
- Web services enhancement
CICS TX 11.1 offers an enhanced inbound SOAP XML web services capability. This includes support for the channels and container interface for CICS TX inbound web services. CICS TX applications that use the APIs of channels and containers can be exposed as inbound SOAP XML web services. This provides pipeline configuration that enables the processing of SOAP messages through a sequence of predefined message handlers.

As organizations undergo digital transformation, hybrid application deployment can be a core strategy for achieving key characteristics such as agility, flexibility, and optimization.
CICS TX offers cloud-native deployment capabilities by enabling hybrid application deployment of CICS TX applications across cloud platforms of choice. It also permits integration with CICS TS and TXSeries.
CICS TX can be used in the following scenarios:
- Redeployment of CICS applications that need to be closer to systems of engagement applications. Application deployment can be standalone or have a hybrid topology to integrate with CICS TS or TXSeries.
- Full migration of existing TXSeries applications to a cloud platform of choice.
CICS TX is built using a highly stable core runtime of TXSeries. It supports CICS APIs that are derived from TXSeries.

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through intrusion prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a regulatory compliant, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.
Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
