Overview

Top rule

As an add-on to IBM Cloud Pak for Applications, Blockchain Platform enables your organization to manage and monetize digital assets in the scope of dynamic and decentralized cloud-native applications. Decentralized cloud-native applications can use the robust capabilities of blockchain tools, infrastructure services, automation, orchestration, virtualization, and containerization, and microservices architecture, providing visibility and consistency across infrastructures.

With the open source Hyperledger Fabric as its foundation, Blockchain Platform enables your organization to build, operate, govern, and grow a blockchain network. Blockchain Platform facilitates cloud-native development for organizations that want to build their blockchain solution across public and private cloud instances by using Red Hat OpenShift or another Kubernetes environment.

When combined with IBM Cloud Pak for Applications, these blockchain capabilities enable enterprises to rapidly develop decentralized applications. The blockchain features in this add-on further strengthen IBM Cloud Pak for Applications, a solution that is purpose-built for the cost-effective transition of traditional apps to the cloud according to your business needs and the development and deployment of new cloud-native applications.

Blockchain Platform can be deployed by using the Red Hat OpenShift license entitlement within IBM Cloud Pak for Applications. With IBM Cloud Pak for Applications, users can have sufficient entitlements before, during, and after a modernization project with flexible entitlement. These offerings use the Virtual Processor Core (VPC) ordering metric.

Description

Top rule

Blockchain Platform unlocks digital transformation use cases by providing a path to autonomous applications, security-rich data sharing, plug-and-play applications, and decentralized identity. It enables your organization to move beyond application modernization, with capabilities to automate business processes, launch new digital products, and monetize key digital assets.

Blockchain Platform extends the capabilities of IBM Cloud Pak for Applications to give your organization a seamless experience while taking advantage of the key elements of cloud-native development:

  • Containerization. Red Hat OpenShift, a lightweight Kubernetes orchestration platform, is the foundation of both Blockchain Platform and IBM Cloud Pak for Applications, enabling the flexibility to scale your application and integrate with your enterprise needs. Red Hat OpenShift can be used to access Kubernetes-based, third-party tooling. With Red Hat OpenShift, you can deploy your blockchain network on premises or in multiple public clouds.
  • Common languages and frameworks. Red Hat Runtimes within IBM Cloud Pak for Applications provides a set of open runtimes, tools, and components for developing and maintaining cloud-native applications. It offers lightweight runtimes and frameworks for highly distributed cloud architectures, such as microservices.
  • Microservices. Within IBM Cloud Pak for Applications, Kabanero Enterprise is the commercial enterprise-ready and fully supported implementation of the Kabanero.io open source community project. Kabanero Enterprise integrates with, extends, and adds value to Red Hat OpenShift. Paired with blockchain, it can increase the speed of the development of applications that are built for Kubernetes while meeting the technology standards and policies determined by a blockchain consortium.
  • Flexible cloud infrastructure. Blockchain Platform enables your organization to connect to nodes that are running on premises or in public or hybrid cloud environments; or build a single network that spans multiple environments. IBM Cloud Pak for Applications also features Red Hat OpenShift container platform as a foundation, and provides a long-term solution to help you transition between public, private, and hybrid clouds environments, and create new business applications.
  • Agile DevOps process. Blockchain Platform enables developers to move from development to test to production, from a single console. The Blockchain Platform Visual Studio (VS) Code extension is used to integrate smart contract development and network management. Additionally, the DevOps Add-on to Cloud Pak for Applications provides the capability for deployment automation and orchestration, release management, reporting, value stream visualization, and pipeline management. These capabilities can enable enterprises to increase the speed of product delivery.
  • User-centric front ends. Blockchain Platform works with IBM Mobile Foundation within IBM Cloud Pak for Applications to enable developers to rapidly build and deploy the next generation of blockchain applications, extending to mobile, wearables, conversation, or web front ends. With Mobile Foundation, developers get containerized mobile back-end services that cover robust security features, application lifecycle management, push notifications, feature toggle, offline sync, and back-end integration.
  • Application modernization. With its traditional and Liberty runtimes, IBM WebSphere® Application Server (a component of IBM Cloud Pak for Application) can be used to modernize applications for production-ready, standards-based Java EE-compliant architectures. Organizations that want to build new applications can use Blockchain Platform and integrate with popular third-party services by using standard Kubernetes integrations.

As a robust extension to IBM Cloud Pak for Applications, Blockchain Platform is designed to provide organizations with an easy-to-use platform that enables the development of multicloud blockchain networks with Red Hat OpenShift.
