This update to IBM® Cloud Pak for Applications announcement clarifies the definition of Kabanero Enterprise to extend the list of programs included within it and is a revision to the original announcement (IBM Software Announcement AP19-0375, dated August 06, 2019). Each Virtual Processor Core entitlement used to deploy Red Hat OpenShift with Kabanero Enterprise and Red Hat Runtimes now has additional programs included, increasing the per-core capability of a deployment.

With IBM Cloud Pak for Applications, you get the leading platform solutions from IBM in one bundle. You no longer need to choose between private, cloud-based platforms, traditional server deployments, or public cloud WebSphere® deployments. IBM Cloud Pak for Applications delivers all of those platform options, the capability to mix and match as your business requires now, and the flexibility to change that mix over time as you transition and create more applications for the cloud.

Key offerings included with IBM Cloud Pak for Applications

  • IBM WebSphere Application Server
  • Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform
  • Kabanero Enterprise
  • Red Hat Runtimes
  • IBM Cloud Private
  • IBM Mobile Foundation

These programs are full function and use the simplified Virtual Processor Core (VPC) pricing metric. A VPC ratio table is used to define program entitlements per VPC.

Description

IBM Cloud Pak for Applications

IBM Cloud Pak for Applications includes the following programs or components.

IBM WebSphere Application Server

WebSphere Application Server, with its traditional and Liberty runtimes, offers an industry-leading, production-ready, standards-based Java™ EE-compliant architecture. WebSphere runtimes in DevOps workflows make it easy to integrate WebSphere into modern toolchains and DevOps implementations. This enables security-rich, flexible, and efficient access to internal or external software components and services. WebSphere support for IBM Cloud Private, public clouds, traditional servers, and Docker container deployments provide seamless hybrid topologies.

IBM Cloud Pak for Applications include WebSphere Application Server ND, WebSphere Application Server, and the WebSphere Liberty Core editions with the capability to easily mix and match between them. WebSphere Application Server configurations are built on a common server foundation that delivers the same Java EE and broad programming model support, and a transactional engine with increasingly higher qualities of service available across product configurations. Furthermore, the Liberty profile is included across the various configurations, delivering a highly composable, fast to start, and ultralightweight profile of the application server optimized for developer and operational productivity for web applications. WebSphere Liberty is built to address the new challenges of microservices and cloud-native applications, offering the flexibility to incrementally add higher quality of service to applications as business needs change without the cost of rearchitecting, reprogramming, or migrating to different technology bases.

Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform

Red Hat OpenShift is a leading enterprise Kubernetes platform that delivers a security-focused, consistent foundation to deliver applications anywhere and with streamlined developer workflows to get to market faster. With Red Hat OpenShift, innovators can focus on what matters, stay competitive, and outpace continually rising customer expectations.

Red Hat OpenShift delivers a robust solution for hybrid cloud, enterprise container, and Kubernetes development and deployments. It includes an enterprise-grade Linux® operating system, container runtime, networking, monitoring, container registry, authentication, and authorization solutions. These components are tested together for unified operations on a complete Kubernetes platform spanning every cloud.

Red Hat OpenShift is fully supported as part of IBM Cloud Pak for Applications.

Kabanero Enterprise

Kabanero Enterprise is the commercial, enterprise-ready, and fully supported implementation of the Kabanero.io open source community project. Kabanero Enterprise integrates with, extends, and adds value to Red Hat OpenShift.

The following bundled programs are included and supported as part of the Kabanero Enterprise license entitlement when deployed in containers onto Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform:

  • WebSphere Liberty Core
  • WebSphere Application Server
  • IBM Mobile Foundation

In the context of the Kabanero Enterprise entitlement, a deployment of Open Liberty in a container onto Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform is supported equivalently to the WebSphere Application Server bundled program.

Kabanero is an open source project that is focused on bringing together foundational open source technologies into a modern microservices-based framework. Developing apps for container platforms requires harmony between developers, architects, and operations. Developers need to be efficient at much more than writing code. Architects and operations get overloaded with choices, standards, and compliance. Kabanero accelerates development of applications built for Kubernetes while meeting the technology standards and policies that are defined by your company. Design, develop, deploy, and manage with speed and control.

Red Hat Runtimes

Red Hat Runtimes provides a set of open runtimes, tools, and components for developing and maintaining cloud-native applications. It offers lightweight runtimes and frameworks for highly distributed cloud architectures, such as microservices.

Red Hat Runtimes are fully supported as part of IBM Cloud Pak for Applications.

IBM Cloud Private

IBM Cloud Private is an integrated platform for developing and managing containerized applications. This private, integrated environment can be deployed behind firewalls and managed or controlled in flexible options as dictated by the needs of the enterprise. It is built on open source frameworks and the container orchestrator Kubernetes, and contains a private image repository, a management console, monitoring tools, and a robust catalog of services. It also enables integrations to popular open source and cloud-native tools, as well as IBM application middleware and development services.

IBM Mobile Foundation

IBM Mobile Foundation offers an industry-leading security-rich platform for developers to rapidly build and deploy advanced digital apps, including mobile, wearables, conversation, web, and progressive web apps (PWAs). With Mobile Foundation, developers get containerized, mobile, back-end services covering robust security, application lifecycle management, push notifications, feature toggle, offline sync, and back-end integration. The platform also ships a low-code studio, private app store, and rich software development kits (SDKs) for widely used mobile frameworks for both native and hybrid developers.
