As clients move to transform their business with cloud, mobile IOT (Internet of Things), analytics, social, and cognitive, they run into a wall of content that is particularly unstructured and grows exponentially. The growth of content is a challenge in a world of tight budgets, but this content can also have significant value to an enterprise. That content has a diverse set of requirements around where and how it is stored, managed, and accessed. Some content has to be stored inside of your data center, while other content can take advantage of the elastic characteristics of cloud. IBM Cloud Object Storage is a hybrid cloud object storage offering that can be deployed on premises as a system, as a service on the IBM Cloud or a combination of the two. This offering enables clients to store data at the petabyte and exabyte level, and encrypts, expands, slices and disperses data to further protect your information effectively and efficiently.
For clients who require an object storage solution, Cloud Object Storage System is an ideal solution. It can help solve petabyte-to-exabyte storage challenges for businesses worldwide. Instead of creating multiple copies of client data and storing them in different systems, Cloud Object Storage System allows you to disperse, store, and retrieve a single instance of data in a private storage cloud. The data is protected against hardware component failures by erasure coding in the Information Dispersal Algorithm (IDA), rather than by storage of multiple copies.
Cloud Object Storage System is designed to scale at a lower cost and less complexity than traditional services, with enterprise-grade security capabilities up to 99.9999999999999% reliability.
Cloud Object Storage System addresses many of the challenges that can come with the following data storage use cases:
- Object Storage-as-a-Service. Deliver new levels of storage capacity and availability for clients, with enterprise-grade security capabilities.
- Active archive. Keep content accessible with a scalable and reliable long-term data archive, protected by enterprise-grade security capabilities.
- Backup repository. When cost optimization is the priority over recovery time objectives, an easy, scalable, and continuous backup repository is available for dependable recovery.
- Content repository. Entrust business-critical data to a reliable and scalable storage platform.
- Enterprise collaboration. Storage for all of your data needs, in a single system and a single namespace with global access using RESTful interfaces can facilitate enterprise collaboration.
In November, 2015, IBM acquired Cleversafe®, Inc, a leading developer and manufacturer of object-based storage software and appliances. With this acquisition, IBM incorporated the object storage technologies of Cleversafe into the IBM portfolio of solutions to enhance on-premise and IBM Cloud service storage options for clients and service providers with large scale active archives and unstructured data content stores.

Cloud Object Storage System is an object storage solution that helps address petabyte and beyond storage challenges for companies worldwide. Cloud Object Storage System is deployed on a cluster of servers, with each server acting as one of three types of components that include:
- Cloud Object Storage Manager. The Cloud Object Storage Manager provides configuration, administration and monitoring capabilities.
- Cloud Object Storage Accesser® Node. Accesser nodes are deployed in the Cloud Object Storage System to provide the storage system endpoint for applications. The Accesser Node is a stateless component that presents the storage interface of the Cloud Object Storage System to client applications and transforms data by using an IDA.
- Cloud Object Storage Slicestor® Node. Slicestor nodes provide the data storage capacity for the Cloud Object Storage System and receive data to be stored from Accesser nodes on ingest and returning data to Accesser nodes as required by reads.
Each component consists of software that runs on a compatible, industry-standard server. The required servers may be purchased from IBM, provided by means of IBM Cloud Infrastructure as a Service, or purchased directly from a third party. Cloud Object Storage System software is compatible with a wide range of servers from many sources. IBM conducts a hardware certification of specific servers to enable a quicker initial installation, improved long-term reliability, and more predictable performance than would be possible without completing this hardware certification.
The IDA transforms each object written to the system into a number of slices, such that the object can be read bit perfectly by using a subset of those slices. The number of slices created is called the IDA Width (or Width) and the number required to read the data is called the IDA Read Threshold (or Read Threshold). The difference between the Width and the Read Threshold is the maximum number of slices that can be lost or temporarily unavailable while still maintaining the ability to read the object.
Cloud Object Storage System combines encryption and erasure-coding techniques to transform the data in a way that enables highly reliable and available storage without making copies of the data as would be required by traditional storage architectures. By enabling reliability and availability without storing multiple copies of the data, Cloud Object Storage System can offer significant reductions in the total cost of ownership (TCO).
Cloud Object Storage System software delivers what is necessary to harness the power of unstructured data with the following characteristics:
Storage systems should be able to handle current storage requirements and scale to meet anticipated future needs in a single storage system and a single namespace, rather than by using an ever-increasing number of limited-capacity storage silos. Cloud Object Storage System is based on proven, web-scale technology with production deployments that exceed 100 petabytes of capacity at multiple clients, and the ability to scale to exabytes of capacity in a single object namespace.
From built-in encryption of data at rest and in motion, to a range of authentication and access control options, Cloud Object Storage System includes a wide range of capabilities that are designed to help meet client security requirements. These capabilities are implemented to enable robust security without compromising scalability, availability, ease of management, or economic efficiency
- Reliability and availability
The Cloud Object Storage System is flexible with respect to the configuration of the IDA. This allows design-time tradeoffs between system availability, data reliability, and the amount of raw storage that is needed for every terabyte of data to be stored (known as the expansion factor). Lower expansion factors can reduce costs but with lower availability and reliability characteristics than can be achieved with higher expansion factors. High levels of reliability and availability are possible with the ability to configure a system to offer an estimated 99.99999999999999% reliability or 99.999999% availability when designed accordingly, all while storing only a single copy of the data protected against failures at the drive, server, rack, and site level by the IDA.
Cloud Object Storage System is designed to provide reliable availability and can continue to serve storage applications while completing tasks that would require scheduled downtime in traditional storage systems. Software upgrades, hardware maintenance, storage capacity expansion, hardware refresh, and physical relocation of the storage system are all supported with zero downtime.
Cloud Object Storage System requires no specific or proprietary hardware. Using Cloud Object Storage System with industry-standard hardware systems enables an IT organization to achieve significantly lower costs.
- Economics and TCO
Cloud Object Storage System uses unique IDAs to protect digital assets, rather than relying on storage of multiple copies, which can reduce the physical storage capacity required by more than 50%. The IDA encodes the data before storing it in such a manner that data remains available in spite of numerous hard drive or server failures and even site outages, while only storing a single copy of that data.
With Cloud Object Storage System, clients may also achieve TCO savings as compared to existing storage and significant savings relative to the use of public cloud storage. Total savings reflect not only reduced acquisition cost, but also savings on power, cooling, and space due to the smaller hardware footprint.
